Section III The School library Media Center: Facilities and Services
Circulation Policy
Harlem Middle Schools circulation policy, called the check-out policy on the schools website, applies to
all students in all grades. All books (non-fiction and fiction) are checked out for two weeks at a time. Students are
allowed to check out two books at a time. Books may be renewed on or before the due date. A fine of five cents
per day is charged for overdue books. Charges will be assessed once the book reaches three days past due. When
books are lost or damaged, an appropriate fee will be charged. Reference books and magazines can only be
checked out by teachers. Although it is not mentioned on the website, students use their lunch ID numbers to
obtain their account within the program Destiny, a technology tool, to check books in and out. Computers are
available for research, online data bases and curriculum software, Internet access, and word processing. Reference
books and magazines can only be checked out by teachers. If there is a book mistakenly taken from the library,
there is no security system in place to alert the media center staff and that is a book that may never return. The
school is having a new building built so hopefully a security system will be taken into consideration.
students however, there are IPads for students to use in the media center unless a teacher checks them out for
classroom use. Students are allowed to bring their phones and IPads or IPods to school to support instruction
and learning. They can use them in class when permitted therefore the school does participate in Bring Your
Own Technology (BYOT). If they use their technology tools outside of these guidelines, their item is
commandeered. There are several web 2.0 tools the students are allowed to use in school such as, Prezi,
Storyboard, and Animoto to name a few. Computers are available for research, online data bases and
curriculum software, internet access, and word processing. Internet access is granted only with written
parental permission.
Date
Unless a parent objects in writing to the principal of the school where the child is enrolled, the Columbia County School
System and individual schools may periodically acknowledge student work activities, and/or achievements on their web sites. Such
information about your child will be limited to photographs, students first name, student work, and/or grade level.
All students attending CCSS, upon entering Kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade, (and their parents/legal guardians) should
sign the Network Responsibility Agreement for Students of Columbia County Schools. All transfer students or new students to CCSS
should sign a Network Responsibility Agreement upon entering the Columbia County School System.
(Signed agreement form is to be placed in the students permanent record.)
