Section III The School library Media Center: Facilities and Services
Circulation Policy
Harlem Middle Schools circulation policy, called the check-out policy on the schools website, applies to
all students in all grades. All books (non-fiction and fiction) are checked out for two weeks at a time. Students are
allowed to check out two books at a time. Books may be renewed on or before the due date. A fine of five cents
per day is charged for overdue books. Charges will be assessed once the book reaches three days past due. When
books are lost or damaged, an appropriate fee will be charged. Reference books and magazines can only be
checked out by teachers. Although it is not mentioned on the website, students use their lunch ID numbers to
obtain their account within the program Destiny, a technology tool, to check books in and out. Computers are
available for research, online data bases and curriculum software, Internet access, and word processing. Reference
books and magazines can only be checked out by teachers. If there is a book mistakenly taken from the library,
there is no security system in place to alert the media center staff and that is a book that may never return. The
school is having a new building built so hopefully a security system will be taken into consideration.

21st Century Library

In an effort to incorporate literacy standards for the 21st century learner, the website states, The
primary goal of the Media Center is to integrate information literacy standards for the 21st century learner into
the curriculum through collaborative planning and cooperative teaching. The Media Center serves as a
resource for all school stakeholders. It is an integral part of all instructional programs and strives to foster the
love of reading and lifelong learning for all students. The schools media specialist and media clerk are
devoted to teaching students how to access and evaluate information in a 21st century environment. The
HMS Media Center is further committed to the common beliefs articulated in Standards for the 21st-Century
Learner by the American Association of School Librarians. At this time there are no e-books available to

students however, there are IPads for students to use in the media center unless a teacher checks them out for
classroom use. Students are allowed to bring their phones and IPads or IPods to school to support instruction
and learning. They can use them in class when permitted therefore the school does participate in Bring Your
Own Technology (BYOT). If they use their technology tools outside of these guidelines, their item is
commandeered. There are several web 2.0 tools the students are allowed to use in school such as, Prezi,
Storyboard, and Animoto to name a few. Computers are available for research, online data bases and
curriculum software, internet access, and word processing. Internet access is granted only with written
parental permission.

are as follows:

The Media Center is for study, reading, checkout, information literacy instruction, and
research.

The Media Center is a classroom -- treat it as such by respecting the rules and its staff.

Gum, candy, food, and drinks are not permitted at any time in the Media Center.

Silence is not expected in the media center, but a quiet inside voice is!

Computers are off limits except when scheduled by a teacher or Media Center staff.

Students may sit in the quiet reading areas of the Media Center when given extra time by
the teacher.

Scheduling
The HMS Media Center is open daily from 7:30 A.M. until 2:45 P.M. for students to
check out books, return books, or use the Media Center computers for research. Students come as
a group once every two weeks during their English Language Arts class alternating between the
grade level teachers. The Media Center is booked on Mondays (7th grade), Wednesdays (6th
grade), and Fridays (8th grade) for the ELA classes. Please see attached calendar. On Tuesdays
and Thursdays the Media Center is open to all other grades and/or subject areas as first come,
first served. Even though the Media Center is booked for the ELA classes, other students (small
groups or individuals) are allowed to come in and check-out books and/or use the computers for

research, typing, working on projects, etc. Students may also come to the Media Center during
the day as long as they have a pass from a teacher. Here is what a monthly calendar looks like:

Services for Students

On Tuesdays and Fridays, students are provided speech therapy in one of the conference
rooms in the media center. Students are pulled from class and they meet with the speech therapist
for development. Reading remediation classes are provided to students by the media center
during Achievement period Monday-Thursday. These classes help students become more
confident and better readers. Students do STEM research on Fridays. At this time there are no
services for students with disabilities such as ADHD or Autism.

Services for Teachers

There are monthly faculty meetings held in the media center for teachers to be able to
collaborate, solve problems and make decisions, focus on professional development and set goals
just to name a few. Tuesday evenings are scheduled for the middle and high school gifted
certification for teachers.
