Chapter 2: Virtualization and Load

Testing of VCM Products
This chapter contains information about VCM product support for virtual machines, or
virtualization, and a notice about load testing.

VCM Products and Virtualization

The Polycom VCM software solutions include limited virtualization support. Products installed on
Polycom hardware, such as the RealPresence Capture Station Pro appliance, cannot be
virtualized due to driver and interface limitations found in modern HyperVisors. The software
and hardware requirements found within this document were developed using physical
hardware only. It is important to note that performance bottlenecks and runtime inefficiencies
are commonly introduced when virtualizing Polycom VCM software.
In most cases, additional resources should be added to a virtualized environment beyond those
stated in the minimum specifications to account for processor and memory overhead. Polycom
recommends applying a multiplier of 20% against minimum and suggested specifications when
sizing environments for all virtualized VCM software. Determining the exact overhead multiplier
is dependent on customer environments, use-cases, HyperVisor technologies, and host
hardware.
Due to the additional complications and considerations of software virtualization, Polycom
recommends that customers load-test their RealPresence Media Manager software
deployments to identify, mitigate, and remove environment bottlenecks before going into
production. Polycom VCM products that can be virtualized are designed to be compatible with
most HyperVisors out of the box, but are not currently certified for virtualization by any vendor.
Virtualization preferences include Microsoft HyperV and VMWare vSphere.
Products defined in the following table may include interrelated integrations and or product subcomponents. Unless specifically stated, all subcomponents and integrations can be virtualized.
The following products can be virtualized:
RealPresence Media Manager Software Edition
RealPresence Media Editor
The following products cannot be virtualized:
RealPresence Media Manager Appliance Edition
RealPresence Capture Station Pro
RealPresence Capture Station Portable Pro
RSS 4000

Polycom, Inc.

Polycom Video Content Management Version 6.5 Specifications Guide

6.5

The following Virtualization platforms have been identified as compatible, but because
performance is influenced by actual deployment configurations, each environment must be
reviewed and certified by Professional Services after installation. Customers will need an
existing support contract with their virtualization provider and or the ability to resolve issues that
are unique to virtualized environments. Polycom recommends using management systems to
govern and report against virtual hosts. Open Source virtualization platforms and non-affiliated
internet-based third-party cloud providers are not supported without validation and written
authorization from Polycom Global Support Services.

Load Testing VCM Products

The Polycom VCM team has performed basic in-house stress testing to develop and optimize
product feature sets that are subject to high load. The primary areas of focus include Polycom
Rich Media Content and the Media Manager user portal. Products are designed to operate as
stated in common customer deployment scenarios. Due to the flexible design of VCM products,
testing every possible permutation found in large customer deployment scenarios is not

Chapter 5: RealPresence Media Manager

Software Edition Requirements
This chapter describes the hardware and software required to deploy RealPresence Media
Manager software.

About RealPresence Media Manager Solutions

The Polycom RealPresence Media Manager solution is available in three editions:
RealPresence Media Manager Software Edition
RealPresence Media Manager Appliance Edition
RealPresence Media Manager Hosted Edition
The RealPresence Media Manager appliance is a turnkey hardware solution and the Software
and Hosted Editions are available as software only. RealPresence Media Manager software
requires a system administrator to install and configure the necessary hardware, operating
system, and software components.

About RealPresence Media Manager Software Edition

The Software Edition is available as a base software package for installation on an existing
server environment, whether physical, virtual, or a combination of both. It requires a compatible
Microsoft server operating system, such as Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012,
and a compatible Microsoft SQL database, such as Microsoft SQL 2008, SQL 2012 or, for
smaller-scale implementations, SQL Express 2012. Note that SQL Express has limited
scalability. Polycom recommends RealPresence Media Manager Software Edition customers
deploy the full version of Microsoft SQL Server to facilitate scaling the RealPresence Media
Manager solution in the future without the need to move or relocate the databases. The
RealPresence Media Manager software can be installed on one or more servers, based on
customer architecture and scale requirements.
The base license includes access to standard features for up to 500 concurrent users. You can
add users in blocks of 500 users, up to the capacity of your infrastructure. You can also
purchase and install additional options, such as Microsoft SharePoint integration, separately.

About the RealPresence Media Manager Software

Specifications
This chapter outlines the required hardware and software specifications to properly deploy and
support RealPresence Media Manager software. RealPresence Media Manager software is a

flexible solution with many features. These features have been organized into deployment roles
to properly describe the minimum and suggested specifications. System design and validation is
required for RealPresence Media Manager software deployments. Please consult with your
VCM Solutions Architect and or VCM Polycom Global Services representatives before finalizing
system design, architecture, and configurations.

Database Management
RealPresence Media Manager software relies exclusively on Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL)
and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SRSS) to hold and maintain application
configurations, metadata, and metrics.

Database Sizing Guidelines

There are three required databases, three SQL Server Agent Jobs, and 36 pre-made reports
that must be used in order for the application to function properly.
The AccordentAmmsReports database is optional. The default installation will run reports from
the primary database, and, by default, the SQL job that copies data to the AMMSReports DB
will be disabled. Using a separate AccordentAmmsReports database is only recommended
when the portal-viewing load versus reporting load warrants it. Heavily loaded systems may
benefit from a separate reporting database if reports will be accessed during heavy web portal
use.
The following table lists the required databases, database jobs and reports.

RealPresence Media Manager software uses AccordentAmms and AccordentAmmsReports

exclusively for configuration and metric storage. SRSS uses the ReportServer and
ReportServerTempDB databases exclusively as well as house the 36 pre-made reports.
RealPresence Media Manager software references the pre-made reports within SRSS to create
reports based on metrics held within the AccordentAmms or AccordentAmmsReports database.

Database Logging and Recovery Models

When running the RealPresence Media Manager installation wizard, one of three modes can be
selected: Simple, Full, and Bulk-Logged. Each mode is recommended for a different scenario.
Install databases in SQL Server 2005 compatibility mode.
Simple
Simple is the recommended recovery model for smaller installations where a dedicated
database administrator will not always be available to monitor the SQL Server. The simple
recovery model only allows you to recover to the last time a backup was taken in the case of a
database failure. If the simple recovery method is chosen a maintenance job will be installed
that will create a backup, update statistics and defragment indexes on a nightly basis. The
schedule may be changed in the SQL Server Agent after installation.
Full and Bulk-logged
The full and bulk-logged recovery models allow more robust recovery options, but require
additional maintenance specific to the usage and environment of the particular AMMS install.
For this reason, the maintenance job will not be installed if either of these models is chosen. It is
recommended that these models only be used if there will be an on-site or contracted database
administrator present to monitor the SQL Server.

Database Growth
When projecting RealPresence Media Manager database growth, there are three perspectives
to consider. All number references are in bytes.
User Growth Third heaviest usage
Single user entity in the database and there can be multiple aliases tied to it.
Users
U * (2765 + (A * 701))
U = Number of users

A = Average number of aliases per user

User objects support custom fields which can vary in size. Some custom variables are
small such as dates, but can be larger (huge) if acquiring large amounts of (var char)
data per user.

Chapter 6: RealPresence Media Manager

Appliance Edition Specifications
This chapter lists the hardware and software specifications for the RealPresence Media
Manager appliance.

About RealPresence Media Manager Appliance Edition

The Appliance Edition is the RealPresence Media Manager solution pre-installed and configured
on a Dell PowerEdge R620 Rack Server. The appliance is preloaded with Microsoft Server
2012, and Microsoft SQL 2012 Express with Advanced Services.
The appliance comes configured to stream media using the integrated Microsoft IIS Media
Services. This provides desktop- and mobile device-compatible live and on-demand streaming
from a variety of sources, including the Polycom RealPresence Capture Station Pro appliance
and Polycom RSS4000 8.5. Windows Media is not included on the appliance.
RealPresence Media Manager Appliance Edition includes the standard features for up to 500
concurrent users. You can add an additional 500 users to meet the RealPresence Media
Manager appliances maximum capacity of 1000 users. Expanding beyond 1000 users requires
additional system infrastructure, such as load balancers and higher-capacity Microsoft SQL
servers, and professional services consulting to determine the optimum system architecture.
You can purchase and install additional options, such as Microsoft SharePoint integration,
separately.

RealPresence Media Manager Software
For RealPresence Media Manager versions earlier than 6.0.0.10, in IIS, enable Integrated
Windows Authentication for the ~/UI/Content/Secure/IwaLogin.aspx. For version 6.0.0.10 and
above, the RealPresence Media Manager installer will enable IWA automatically.
If you want to log in to the RealPresence Media Manager Portal directly from the server for
debugging or testing, complete the following procedure.
To run IWA LDAP on the local IIS for testing purposes:
1 Set the registry to disable 401 loopback (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861).

Chapter 9: Web Single Sign On (SSO)

Integration
To log in via a form and also allow for SSO authentication, clear the Allow Only Single Sign
On Authentication checkbox. Users who visit the portal without the appropriate SSO
authentication data present, users who have their session time out, or users who click the Log
Out button will be presented with a form that requires manually entering credentials.

About the Authentication URL

If Allow Only Single Sign On Authentication is selected, an Authentication URL must be
entered. When a user arrives at the portal (or times out/logs out) they will be redirected to the
Authentication URL. The application that resides at the Authentication URL is then responsible
for authenticating the user and redirecting them back to the portal with the appropriate
authentication values (defined in the Fields section below) populated, and with the query string
value IsSingleSignOn=true.

For convenience, when redirecting to the Authentication URL a query string value called
originalUrl is included. For example, the Authentication URL may look like:

http://authentication.polycom.com/Login.aspx?originalUrl=http%3a%2f%2flocalhost%3a11701%
2fUI%2fContent%2fSecure%2fLogin.aspx%3fIsSingleSignOn%3dtrue
This is the URL that the authentication server should redirect back to (with the authentication
information appended to the request). This originalUrl contains the information necessary to
redirect the user back to the resource within the portal that they originally requested once
authentication is successful.

Completing the Fields

The fields list is used to configure the values RealPresence Media Manager software expects to
receive from the authentication server when a user is redirected. At least one field must be
created, containing either the email address or username to uniquely identify incoming users.
There are four configurable options per field:
Field Name

This is the name of the field being passed from the authentication server.

Field Type This is where the authentication server will insert the field name/value pair
into the request, including:
Cookie

Header
Post

Query String
Encrypted Encrypted indicates whether or not the value for this field will be encrypted
when the Media Manager receives the request.
Action Action determines what is done with a field's value when received by the
RealPresence Media Manager software. There are three options:
Populate Field When Populate Field is chosen, a list of possible fields is displayed.
The Media Manager will take the value of this SSO field and store it in the
RealPresence Media Manager field selected.

Validate Timestamp When Validate Timestamp is selected, the RealPresence Media

Manager software expects a date/time value to be passed in as the value for this field.
A value in seconds must also be entered when this option is selected. When a request
is received the Media Manager will verify that the timestamp passed in the request is
within the number of seconds selected of the current time. If it is not then the
authentication request will be considered invalid and will fail according to validation
rules defined below.
This is to prevent stale requests from potentially being used. This field would typically
be encrypted. Otherwise the timestamp in the request could be manually manipulated.

Validate Value The RealPresence Media Manager software will verify that the
incoming value of this field matches the value entered for this action. If it does not
match, the authentication request will be considered invalid and will fail according to
validation rules defined below.
This field is typically encrypted. Otherwise the timestamp in the request could be
manually manipulated.

Validation Error Handling

If a field has been defined whose action is set to Validate Timestamp or Validate Value, the
Validation Error Handling section will display. This enables you to define the behavior of the
RealPresence Media Manager software when it comes across an invalid authentication request.

There are four options:

display standard Media Manager error page This option will display a generic
RealPresence Media Manager branded message to the user informing them that their
authentication request has failed.

display the following error text This option allows custom text to be entered that will
be displayed to the user.

Polycom, Inc.

46

6.5

forward to the referrer url defined above When this option is chosen it is required that
a field be defined above to populate the Referrer URL. The RealPresence Media Manager
software will forward the failed request to the value populated in the Referrer URL.

forward to the following url This option allows a url to be entered, and will forward
failed requests to this url.

Encryption
If the Encrypted checkbox is selected for any field, the Encryption section displays.
Information you enter is used by the RealPresence Media Manager software to decrypt any
incoming field values.
Currently, AES is the only supported encryption type. When you select AES from the list, you
must enter a valid AES key. This must match the key that is used to encrypt the values on the
authentication server.

Polycom, Inc.

47

Polycom Video Content Management Version 6.5 Specifications Guide

6.5

If encryption is enabled, a field must be defined to populate the Initialization Vector field. This
allows a unique initialization vector to be passed in along with every request for additional
security.
