TO ALL PARISHIONERS

TAOTPA
ALL
P PARISHIONERS
T OLLARISHIONERS
The ways in which we communicate with one another are constantly changing and
evolving. It has become so complicated. Take a step back into the past... Offices had
typing pools (what are they?) and typewriters, now obsolete, once ruled the world!
Fountain pens and ink bottles aside, a handwritten personal letter is now a rarity
where once it was the only way to exchange views and information. What will
constitute the archive of the future, I wonder? Not a packet of love letters tied with
ribbon in the bottom of a drawer... Letters seem to becoming obsolete too as
technology allows ever more immediate forms of communication and picture sharing
to become the norm.
However, a recent anthology: Letters of Note, edited by Shaun Usher, has become
a best seller; subtitled Correspondence deserving a wider audience it celebrates
the power of letter writing and includes hugely varied treasures such as Leonardo da
Vinci's job application letter, a pop star's letter of advice to a troubled fan and Queen
Elizabeth II's recipe for drop scones sent to President Eisenhower.
There is, however, one method of communication that is perennially popular: to 'say
it with flowers!' Whether it's thank you, congratulations, commiserations, birthday
greetings - or any other occasion, flowers do it best of all. April showers bring forth
May flowers it is said so true, everywhere we look we can see the natural beauty of
flowers with their promise of sunny days ahead. The Rose of England will have been
in our minds as we recently celebrated St. George's Day and of course, the Blessed
Virgin Mary, mother of Our Lord Jesus is sometimes known as the 'mystic rose'. We
have our Easter tradition of lilies of remembrance for our loved ones at this time of
year, and the flowers in our churches look particularly beautiful in Eastertide,
admired by all who visit our churches. We are hugely grateful for the commitment of
the talented and creative flower arrangers who decorate our churches throughout
the year: thank you to you all.
So perhaps we can take time this May to show someone we care about that we are
thinking of them by being rebelliously counter-cultural and sending them a
handwritten letter; or perhaps it's the right time of year - by saying it with flowers?
Reverend Judith

Congham Spring Walk

On Saturday 28th March 14 walkers (and three very well behaved dogs) set off
from St Andrew's Church for a gentle one hour walk. The weather was cool but
fine, ideal for walking and signs of spring were evident, celandines and violets
flowering on the grass verges, raucous rooks on their nests, leaf buds forming on
the trees and hedges. Following the footpath across the field behind Congham
Hall we were relieved to find there was no bull in the field, as indicated on the
warning sign!
As we returned up the Church Walk drops of rain began to fall. Walkers (now
minus the dogs) were joined by some other friends in the church for delicious
home-made hot soup and bread, followed by tea or coffee and cakes. A good
time was had by all.
A similar event is planned for 12th September - look out for notices. You will be
most welcome to join us.

Congham Parish Council News

Next meeting will be on Monday 18th May: The Annual Parish Council Meeting.
Venue Congham Hall Writing Room 7.00pm
Congham Parish Council has a complement of seven councillors. Five people have
come forward to shape the future of Congham Parish; we will therefore need to seek
two further residents to help with this task. Congham residents do not have any
representation from Low Road.
We would welcome greater balance of
representation from residents so that all areas of Congham have good
representation on the Council. If you would be interested in nding out a little more
about becoming a Councillor please contact the Clerk.
The Highway Rangers will be back in Congham at the beginning of May. If there are
any small areas of footpaths, road surfaces or minor repairs etc which you think need
some attention please let the Clerk know as quickly as possible with accurate details
of locations.

GREENFINGERS April 2015

On Tuesday, April 14th, the club held its Annual Spring Show with Fish & Chip
Supper. It was an excellent opportunity for members to socialise. The evening was
very well attended and the floral exhibits were stunning. We appreciated Liz Owen
judging the entries, accompanied by her daughter Christina. It was a difficult task.
We are grateful to The Village Frier and The Loke Fish Bar for our delicious supper.
The winners were as follows:
3 Trumpet Daffodils: 1st Stephanie Steward, 2nd Ann Ess, 3rd Mary Cross.
3 Dwarf Daffodils:

1st Stephanie Steward, 2nd Pauline Crump, 3rd Mary Roper.

A vase of Spring Flowers: 1st Janet Tunmore, 2nd Janet Brittain, 3rd Carol Page.
3 Tulips (one variety): 1st Alan Barlow, 2nd Janet Tunmore, 3rd Stephanie Whittley.
3 Tulips mixed: 1st Judy Woollatt, 2nd Mary Roper, 3rd Stephanie Steward.
The Plant of the Month Trophy was awarded to Margaret Gladman, for the highest
number of points earned during the year.
A card was circulated and signed by all members present, for Charles Fosgate, who
was delighted to receive it.
Schedules were distributed to members for the 26th Annual Horticultural Show, to be
held on Saturday, September 5th in The Village Hall, Pott Row. Any resident of our
villages is welcome to take part and schedules will soon be available in our local
shops, or by calling 01553 630301.
This year our support will be divided between two smaller local charities: The
Forward Day Centre (and Ezone workshop) and Remap.
Next month's meeting is on May 12th, when Charlotte Philcox will make a welcome
return to the club. Her talk is on Herbs and Herb Gardening.
Visitors are always welcome.

GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE

01485 600341
SORE THROAT
Sore throats are often caused
by viruses and usually settle
within one to two weeks
without the need for any
medical treatment. White
spots on the tonsils do not
imply a need for antibiotics.
Paracetamol should be
taken for pain. Follow the
advice on the pack.
Salt gargles may be used to ease a sore throat in adults and
children over 12. Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in half a glass
of water, gargle and spit out. Repeat several times a day.
Please do not ask for antibiotics as refusal may offend
Many people give reasons for asking for antibiotics to treat sore
throats. I'm going on holiday, I'm getting married or I've
got exams are commonly cited. Viruses are immune to such
reasoning and antibiotics are no more likely to be effective on
these occasions.
When to see the doctor

If a sore throat is so severe that you cannot drink

If hoarseness persists for more than six weeks

If a child who is ill refuses to drink

If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell

eighth continent, which has well over 100 bird species found nowhere else on
earth. It should be a great evening.
Visitors most welcome. Admission 2 on the night if you are not a NarVOS

Vandalism on Cricket Field

Children who have been playing there on the cricket field in Congham for the last
couple of weeks have been continually kick there footballs against the old pavilion
which has now been resulted in 3 windows being smashed. They always leave
so much rubbish which the gentleman who runs the cricket club has to clear up
and pay for. We would really like this to stop. The police have been called a
few times.

Each year he invites us to join him for a sponsored run or walk of up to 10miles at one
of Norfolk's country estates.
This year it is being held at Houghton Hall, (near Harpley) on Monday, 4th May.
Registration fee is 10 per family (can be paid on the day).
Registration at 10.30am for an 11.00am start.
The funds you contribute are shared equally between your nominated church and
the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
If you do not fancy walking why not sponsor someone? Contact Rosemary
Mehers (01485 521 866) or Judith Pollard (01485 601251).
There will be a live band and seating; local churches, including St Lawrence's,
Harpley, will be running a cake and refreshments stall.
Why not come along and support us - bring a picnic and enjoy the Bank Holiday!
Free parking in front of the house follow the signs.

QEH MATTERS
Remember the Stroke Awareness event at the QEH on May 7th at 7.00pm. This is
being held in conjunction with the Stroke Association. There will be talks from
professionals and information for carers. Car parking will be free on the bus stop car
park and you will be directed from there.
Governors continue to take part in mock CQC inspections where we look at various
wards or departments from the patient's point of view. We talk to patients and staff,
inspect paperwork and the environment and observe what is happening in the area.
The reports are discussed at the council and board meetings. This is in preparation
for the next official CQC which is due soon.
The Trust has employed a 'Front of House' receptionist based with the volunteers at
the main entrance. She will be there between 8.30 and 17.30, Monday to Friday. With
access to the Trust's internal systems, she will be able to provide better informed
answers to the common questions asked by visitors, such as which ward their family
and friends are staying on. This is a good start but we are pressing to have someone
there for evenings and weekends as well.
The alterations to the footpath from the car park have taken much longer than
expected and the Trust apologises for the inconvenience it has caused.
The next Governors' Council meeting is on Tuesday 2nd June at 4.00pm; in the
Conference room at the QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please
phone 01553 613142 if you wish to attend.

Holly Meadows School: LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Maths Trail:
The school is looking forward to an action packed term with lots of opportunities
for learning outside the classroom. The term has kicked off with a Maths Trail.
This was an opportunity for the children to work in their Big Cats groups, with the
Year 6s leading their teams round the school grounds answering lots of practical
maths questions, such as How many wheels are there in the car park? How
long is the Trim Trial (but you haven't got a measuring stick to use)? Estimate the
number of blades of grass in a hoop. The children always work well in these
groups and we continue to be impressed with the leadership skills we see put to
good use and the respect that the younger children show the older ones.
Grounds development:
Mr Prior and Mr Williams are hoping to get to work on the grounds again as part
of the curriculum work for Aldrin and Barbosa class, particularly the pond, flower
beds and raised vegetable beds. If anyone has any plants or seeds to donate, the
gentlemen would be very grateful for any contributions. Mrs Lake, Mrs Thorpe and
Mrs Staff have already been planting and growing with Gardening Club on a
Friday afternoon and I am sure that this work will tie in very well with what is being
planned. Thanks go to the children and the club leaders who are certainly making
a difference to our school grounds through their work.
Walk, bike, scoot to work:
We hope that we will be able to encourage as many children to walk, bike or scoot
to school rather than taking a ride in a car this term. It is much healthier and will
make the congestion issue much more manageable if we have fewer cars on the
road. I know that a number of children who have to travel by car, do so through lift
sharing and this is very positive in so many ways less cars on the road,
travelling with a friend is fun, parents get released from the Pickup routine for
important activities like going to work. It is also more fuel efficient! Give it a go and
see how much better you feel.
Athletics:
Mrs Seaton (PE Subject Leader) and the staff are looking forward to the athletics
season and our Sports Day (date still to be confirmed). The oldest children take
part in the morning, competing in some organised throwing events and then in the
traditional flat races. In the past we have held a Tug of War competition between
the houses which has been very popular. The school won the inter-cluster
competition two years ago and the rematch has never been reorganised so we
continue to be the Cluster Champions for Tug of War! The youngest children also
get to take part in a Sports Day competition in the same style, the best race being
to see who can eat their ice pop before it melts in the heat of the sun! We are all
looking forward to that competition. The school league/cluster matches will still
continue through this term and this includes the Girls' Football Team who are
going from strength to strength.
Best wishes for good adventures out in the fresh air!

The Last Word

How hard it is sometimes to answer the why? questions. Without answers we
are restless. Some we will never answer. Take three recent events that throw up
the why questions.
Why would Andreas Lubitz take 149 passengers to their deaths by crashing their
plane into the French Alps? Why would thousands of people want to see, and
even touch, the coffin containing the bones of King Richard III? Why do so many
say they have no interest in politics and have no intention of voting on May 7?
Perhaps Andreas Lubitz's girlfriend gave a likely answer. She reported Andreas
said he wanted to do something, which would cause his name to be known the
world over forever. He certainly achieved his proud objective. We shall never
know why he put the plane into a rapid dive to destruction, but it revealed a very
sick mind. What a way to achieve notoriety! What a shame somebody didn't get
alongside Andreas to make him think about the legacy he left his parents.
Peter Snow on Channel 4 guiding the programme showing the internment of King
Richard confessed to being baffled by the event. Others thought it was surreal.
But it reminded us history is important, and can't be erased or buried. An event in
the past, even 500 years ago, can have a powerful effect on the present.
Whatever was intended for the pageant it certainly put Leicester on the map.
Perhaps it was simply that as a nation we love a pageant particularly when it
brings our very diverse community together in peace and happiness. For
Leicester Cathedral it was an opportunity to remind the nation that the historical
events 2000 years ago of the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ still have a
powerful effect on the present. We all have the opportunity to inherit the riches of
the best of the past, and not to throw away its legacy.
Multiparty politics is a comparatively newcomer to British politics. The cacophony
of solutions on offer to solve the nation's many problems are seen as hollow
promises by a society that has become familiar with the sleight of being
economical with the truth. We discover self-serving rather than people-serving too
often. We see too many doing what is right in their own eyes, a recipe for
confusion and distrust. Is it surprising there is little interest in politics and no
inclination to vote? But then a manifesto full of humility, truth and righteousness
isn't very appealing to the present mood of voters.
Is it not time to reflect on the brave political commentator in Israel, called Isaiah,
who lived more than 500 years before the Common Era? His answer to the many
why questions of his day was to remind his hearers of the fatal flaw in all of us. He
wrote: All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned each one to his own
way. Sheep do the silliest of things some of which are dangerous. Sheep need a
shepherd, and perhaps we do also to guide us from making more foolish and
dangerous decisions. After all is said and done, what's done is done and becomes
part of history and inevitably leaves a legacy.
