Ask the class what the main idea is. Once the class has decided on a main idea, have students
write two details on sticky notes that support the main idea. They may highlight these key details
in the text while reading. Collect and read a few examples.

Give students a Whats The Main Idea? sheet They will practice this skill on their own. First,
they will read a passage. Then, they have to cut out the main idea and key details and glue them
into the correct boxes.

Collects the Whats The Main Idea? worksheets to use as an assessment. This will show which
students understand the concept.

Give students with a high understanding a Whats The Main Idea? sheet that doesnt have
answers to glue into boxes They will have to come up with these sections on their own.
