Fourth year Civil Eng. 15 January 2015 Allowable time 3.0 hours Final Exam Design of Irrigation Structures IT 1 (45 degrees a) A group of Regulators is to be constructed to distribute the discharge passing through a main canal A-B into two identical canals B-C and B-D. The cross section of the main canal A-B upstream the regulators and the cross section of canals B-C and B-D downstream regulators is shown in Figure (1). The maximum passing discharge through the main canal A-B is 40 m/sec. The maximum allowable heading up is 10 cm. Each regulator consists of 2 vents each 3 m width. Sliding steel gates are used for regulation, Each gate consists of 2 horizontal main girders and 3 vertical cross girders. The bridge width over each regulator is 10.0 m and it has two sidewalks of 1.50 m width for each. The equivalent D.L. of the bridge = 1.5 vm’. The equivalent L.L. on the traffic lanes is assumed uniformly distribution of intensity = 2.0 t/m®, while a uniformly distribution L.L. of 0.5 Um* is assumed on the foot paths. B) A sewer pipeline is laid on a slope 0.006, and is designed to convey a flow of 400 liters/sec. The sewer pipeline is designed so that it will be partially full, and the water area is 2/3 the full pipe area, Determine the diameter of the sewer pipeline and the water depth Take n=0.013. Question (3): (17 Marks) ‘A) Derive the equation used for presenting the velocity distribution in open channels for the case of uniform laminar flow. B) A new lined canal shall be constructed in Wadi El-Natroun area. The maximum design rate of flow is 100 m*/sec, the side slope is 2:1, and longitudinal bed slope is 10 cm/km. The channel is lined with concrete, for which the design Manning roughness coefficient is 0.0182. The cost of excavation of the channel is 8 pounds/m and the total cost of lining is 100 pounds/m*. Determine the cost of constructing one kilometer of the channel in million pounds considering the following two cases: (i) The wv bed width is four times the water depth (b=4y), and (ji) The channel section is best hydraulic section. Which section would you recommend? Why? C1 Question (4): (15 Marks) i» | A) Show the difference between the following: the specific energy curve, specific (_ discharge curve and specific force curve. 71] B) A discharge of 15 m/sec is passing in a rectangular channel of bed width 10.0 meters and water depth = 2.5 meters. A smooth hump is placed in the channel in which the bed J level is gradually increased by 0.75 m. Determine the change in water levels, and If maximum allowable height of a hump is 1.25 meter, determine how can you create critical depth over hump without changing y1 =) 412 Question (5): (20 Marks) ‘A) Derive the gradually varied flow equation in terms of Froude number. 8) Sketch the water surface profile if the channel bed slope is changed from 0.2Sc to 1.48¢ to 0.4S¢ where Sc is the critical bed slope. C) A long lined rectangular channel, of bed width 20 meters, consists of three reaches. The first reach has a horizontal bed slope, while the bed slope of the third reach is 10 cmvKm. A backwater curve of the type S; is formed in the second reach. The S; curve begins with a water depth 2.5 meters and ends with a water depth 4 meters. Find the bed slope of the second reach. Also sketch the water surface profile along the three reaches showing water depths at the beginning and end of each reach and hydraulic jump. Determine the water depth at a section located 500 meters upstream the end of the horizontal reach ‘Take Manning coefficient n = 0.016. Arrange your answer in a table. Question (6): (18 Marks) A) Water is flowing in a wide channel of rectangular section. The channel bed width is 60 meters, normal water depths 3 meters, bed slope is 12 cm/km, and Manning roughness coefficient is 0.02. A model of this channel is to be constructed in the laboratory. To obtain accurate results from the model study the following conditions are to be satisfied: (i) The maximum value of the distortion value is 3, (ii) The minimum water depth in the model is 6.0 cm, and (iii) The experiment time is minimum. Determine: (i) The distortion factor and length ratio, and (ii) The model: water depth, mean velocity, discharge, and bed slope. 8) The rate of flow Q through a V-notch is some function of head H, gravity g, velocity of approach V, and the angle of the notch 8.
