s No. 1 Kentucky (6-0) prepares for its

next game Monday night against Illinois
State, it does so with uncertainty at its point
guard position. Namely, who will play it?
After sophomore Tyler Ulis went down
with a hyperextended right elbow on Friday
in Miami against South Florida, the Wildcats
point guard could do nothing more than cheer
on his teammates on the UK bench with his
arm in a sling. Now, the question turns to will
he play Monday, and if not then, what about
Thursday at UCLA?
I dont think hell practice (Sunday), but
its day to day, head coach John Calipari said.
Hes moving it.
The Wildcats still have two five-star, potential first round NBA draft picks who they can
play at the position, so its not as though the
cupboard is bare by any stretch of the imagination, but without Ulis, the Cats are undoubtedly a different team.
When Ulis went down with his injury with
5:27 to play in the first half, the Wildcats proceeded to go on a 12-0 run to close out the
half, and opened the second half on 13-5 run.
But by the end of the second half, Kentucky

cant go in and just not guard. You cant go in and

be so anxious that youre tight. You cant do that
here. Youve got to play. And its on them to do it.
And they know it.
Whether Kentucky does or does not have
Ulis, the Cats will face an Illinois State team that,
despite its 3-4 record, pushed No. 2 Maryland
to the limit on Nov. 24. The Redbirds trailed by
just one at halftime and led with less than eight
minutes to play in the game.
Weve got this one tomorrow and it might
be without Tyler, Coach Cal said. If it is without
Tyler, its a different game for us. We dont know if
a game is close who panics. And like I said, they
had Maryland down two late in the game. They
ended up losing by 11, but it was only because
Maryland made three 3s to end the game. So, this
team is capable of beating us.

scoring with a season-high 21 points, but Calipari

wants him to get to the foul line more, where hes
an 88.2 percent shooter.
Illinois State will come down and they play
a little bit like Arkansas: theyll just trap you from
different areas of the court, Calipari said. Well,
first of all, we havent played against it yet. Now,
Tyler has, but none of these other guys have.
Thats one thing. And the second thing is, they
spread the court and they have five men out. So
all five guys are out, which means everybody can
get beat on the dribble. Thats an issue for us, because we got a couple guys that have yet to keep
a guy in front of them. So they may find that guy
and thats who they go after. We gotta figure out
how were playing. So its not that Im worried
about Isaiah and Jamal and how theyll
play Dom(inique Hawkins) its not
that. Its that were playing a team that
plays a little different, that Tyler would
have no problem with, but these guys
may.
Hawkins is another player who
could see an uptick in minutes Monday
if Ulis were to sit out. Against South
Florida, the junior guard logged nine
minutes, hit one of his two 3-point attempts, dished out an assist, had a steal
and took a charge. Afterward, Calipari said he liked what he saw from the
Richmond, Ky., native, adding that
Hawkins may be that elusive rotational guy hes been looking for all season.
It was only one game prior that
Hawkins lasted less than a minute on
the floor before being taken back out
due to running under a screen on defense. For Hawkins to see more playing
time, Calipari said its all about defensive effort, defensive intensity and focus. If Hawkins can do that, as he did
against USF, there could be more playing time available.
Hes a great kid, Calipari said.
What I want for him, to be honest, really doesnt matter. Its what he wants
and what hes willing to do to get that.
Calipari doesnt want Isaiah Briscoe avoiding contact, as he said
Theres pressure on these kids. Like you
he did against USF. (photo by Chet White, UK Athletics)

Mitchell Earns 200th Win at Kentucky

By Chris Shoals
UK Media Relations

niversity of Kentucky womens basketball

head coach Matthew Mitchell earned his
200th win at UK on Sunday afternoon as the No.
12/11 Wildcats beat the Jackson State Lady Tigers
92-24 in Memorial Coliseum.
Mitchell, who is in his ninth season at Kentucky and 12th season of being a head coach,
is now 200-81 (.711) in his nine years at UK
and moves his overall record to 230-110 (.676)
as a head coach. Mitchell became UKs all-time
winningest coach on March 4, 2013 after just
six seasons of coaching, and becomes the fifth
UK basketball coach to eclipse 200 wins at UK
joining Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino and
Tubby Smith.
The margin of victory for UK was 68 points
on Sunday, its largest since a 60-point win over
Grambling State in 2013.
Kentucky had four different runs of 10-0 or
more during the game, including a season-high
22 straight points in the first half, which led the
Wildcats to a 47-17 lead at the half. The 30-point
lead at the half was UKs largest halftime lead of
the season, as the Wildcats were led by Evelyn
Akhator in scoring, with 13 points and three rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. The 13-point
performance for the junior from Lagos, Nigeria

marked the fifth time in six games this season that

she had scored in double figures. Akhator ended
the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The
20 points scored was a career high, and her third
double-double of the season.
UKs defense was also clicking on Sunday
after returning from Thanksgiving break, forcing
the Lady Tigers into a season-high 37 turnovers,
scoring a season-high 42 of those points off of
turnovers. Defensively, Kentucky charted 28 defensive rebounds out of its total of 50 and only
committed eight personal fouls in the entire
40-minute affair. In the final three periods, UK
held JSU to seven, four and three points after
just a 10 point opening quarter. The 24 points
allowed is the second-lowest in program history,
one less than the 25 points allowed vs. Jacksonville State in 2011.
Kentucky moves to 6-0 on the young season, marking the fourth time in nine seasons
at UK that Mitchell has led UK to a 6-0 start.
The Wildcats will look to make it seven wins in
a row to start the season on Wednesday, Dec.
2 at Northern Kentucky. The game will start at
7 p.m. ET from the BB&T Arena in Highlight
Heights, Ky.

Kentucky Traditions
Blue and White
The University of Kentucky adopted blue and
white as its official colors in 1892. UK students
had first decided on blue and light yellow before
the Kentucky-Centre football game Dec. 19, 1891.
The yellow was soon dropped from the combination and replaced by white.
The particular Kentucky shade of blue, close
to royal blue, was determined without ceremony.
After settling on the base colors, a student posed
the logical question, What color blue? Letterman Richard Stoll looked down at his necktie and
raised it to the air. The vote was unanimous.

in attendance 22 times since Rupp Arena opened

in 1976-77, including 14 of the last 15 years.
And the tremendous fan base is not limited to
just Lexington. Each year, Kentucky fans flock to
Freedom Hall in Louisville, to fill the arena with
more than 20,000 fans for an annual home game.
The Southeastern Conference Tournament?
Well, it might as well be called the Kentucky Invitational. March Madness? Nearly the same result.
The nations largest media contingent follows
the Cats from start to finish simply because of the
fans incessant appetite for information on their
Wildcats.

Wildcats Nickname
The official nickname for the University of
Kentuckys athletics teams is Wildcats. The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a
6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909,
on the road.
Commandant Carbusier, then head of the military department at old State University (UK), told a
group of students in a chapel service following the
game that the Kentucky football team had fought
like wildcats.
Later the name Wildcats became more and
more popular among UK followers as well as with
members of the media. As a result, the nickname
was adopted by the University.

Trademark Swoosh
Only the best wear Nike. Kentucky not only
wears Nike, but is under an all-school contract
with the athletic apparel company. In 1997, UK
signed the contract with the popular makers of
the trademark swoosh. Thanks to Nikes extensive
research and product development, UK student-athletes stay on the cutting edge of quality and
style with all of their gear.
All 22 sports use Nike shoes and equipment,
and over the course of the contract, the Wildcats
will receive millions of dollars worth of clothing,
equipment and cash. The mens basketball team
has been recognized by the apparel company as
a Nike Elite team.
While clothing adorned with Kentucky was already popular throughout the nation, thanks to Nike
and its international marketing reach, Kentuckys
blue and white can now be found worldwide.

UK Dance Team
The University of Kentucky Dance Team helps
generate excitement and enthusiasm at Wildcat
athletics events. Under the tutelage of Dawn Duncan Walters and assistant coach Andrea Masters,
the dance team includes both Blue and White
squads. The team won its first national championship at the 2005 national competition sponsored
by the United Spirit Association. It backed that
up with a second-place finish in 2006 and took
home third at the 2007 championships. The 2010
squad placed fifth in the Pom Division at UDA
2010 Nationals.
Fan-tastic!
The Kentucky cheerleaders, band and dance
team combine to entertain the nations largest and
most loyal fan base in college basketball. Sure,
Ashley Judd, Tommy Lasorda, Muhammad Ali and
Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson steal the attention, but those Big Blue stars are just a few of the
Cat fans in attendance at UK games. Its each and
every one of the many Kentucky fans who deserve
the credit for helping the Wildcats lead the nation

Cawoods Court
Prior to the UK-Louisville game on Dec.
29, 2001, the court at Rupp Arena was named
Cawoods Court in honor of Cawood Ledford,
the beloved Voice of the Wildcats for 39 years
(1953-92). Ledford passed away in September
2001, after a long battle with cancer.
The ceremonies included the unveiling of a
logo courtside, not far from where Ledford called
the action. Also included in the ceremony were donations by two area businesses to the Cawood Ledford Scholarship Fund, established in 1992 to assist
former student-athletes in obtaining their degrees.
The Wildcat
The Wildcat mascot originated during the
1976-77 academic year at UK. Gary Tanner was
the original Wildcat, dancing and entertaining
thousands of UK fans at Commonwealth Stadium
and Rupp Arena during athletics events.

A few years later, he was joined by another Cat

walking on stilts who made his appearance
during UKs twin tower era of Melvin Turpin and
Sam Bowie.
Today, both the Wildcat and his sidekick,
Scratch, attend each football and basketball game,
several academic functions and generally serve as
friendly ambassadors for the University.
Scratch
Scratch joined the cheerleading squad in the
mid 90s in conjunction with the UK Kids Club,
but today he has become almost as recognizable
as the Wildcat.
The lovable face of UK Athletics garnered
national attention after being named to the 2003
Capital One Mascot All-America team, an honor
he earned again in 2004.
Senior Day
Senior Day at Kentucky has become one of the
most celebrated ceremonies in college basketball.
Honoring its senior class, UKs event is one of the
most elaborate and moving programs of its kind.
The pregame ceremony begins with player intro-

ductions. Once they have all burst through banners bearing their likenesses, their families join
them at center court. Then the state song, My Old
Kentucky Home, is sung as the home crowd bids
farewell.
UK Cheerleaders
Rooting on the Wildcats every game are the
award-winning UK Cheerleaders.
Under the direction of adviser T. Lynn Williamson and coach Jomo Thompson, the UK Cheerleaders have become the model cheerleading
squad in the nation. Since 1985, UK has earned
the Universal Cheer Association national championship an impressive 18 times. The squad has
been runner-up five times.
UK Pep Band
With more than 100 members, the University
of Kentucky pep band is one of the largest in the
nation. Clad in its recognizable blue and white outfits, the pep band is directed by Scott-Lee Atchison.
Performing at both home football and basketball
games, the UK pep band has been named by Southern Living as one of the top 10 bands in the South.

President Dr. Eli Capilouto

r. Eli Capilouto became the 12th President of

the University of Kentucky on July 1, 2011.
As President, Dr. Capilouto has intently
engaged with university and community
stakeholders to renew our founding mission
and vision as a public, Flagship, Land-Grant
and Research University. This covenant with the
Commonwealth calls upon the University of
Kentucky to be a guidepost for the state through
a multi-faceted mission of teaching, research,
service and health care.
To embolden the institutions enduring legacy,
Dr. Capilouto has led a process to enrich UKs
academic experience by increasing institutional
investments in merit-based financial aid and
expanding the University Honors Program.
Because of his priorities, the University
has enrolled 289 National Merit, National
Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars
in the last three years tripling the number of
incoming Scholars.
Since Dr. Capiloutos arrival, UK has initiated

more than 89 projects and $1.7 billion in ongoing

and approved capital construction to rapidly
enhance and expand the college experience on
the University campus.
Under his leadership, the University engaged
in an innovative public/private partnership
to revitalize the core of campus and create
modern living/learning communities. Thus far,
12 new residence halls have been completed
or are underway a total investment of $348
million by our private partner, EdR. In addition
to the investment in the residential core, the
University is self-financing and partnering on
major capital projects essential to its academic
and financial future: a $65 million renovated
and expanded Gatton College of Business and
Economics supported by donors and private
philanthropy; a new $110 Academic Science
Building financed, in-part, through a $65 million
partnership with UK Athletics; and a $120

expanded Nutter Training Center financed by
philanthropy; a $175 million renovation and
expansion of the Student Center; $150 million

a new home for the School of Art and Visual
Studies; a new $265 million multi-disciplinary
health sciences research facility in partnership
with the state; and the renewal of the College
of Law in partnership with donors and the state.
Under his leadership, the $3 billion flagship
university for the Commonwealth has gained
significant momentum in fulfilling its broad
and visionary mission. In doing so, President
Capilouto has invested considerable time in
building partnerships with external stakeholders,
as well as new and enduring commitments from
donors and friends of the institution.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Dr.
Capilouto previously served as Provost of the
University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) and
Dean of the UAB School of Public Health.
Dr. Capilouto holds several undergraduate
and graduate degrees from schools within the
University of Alabama system, and a Doctorate
in Health Policy and Management from Harvard

Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart

itch Barnhart, University of Kentucky

Director of Athletics, is being recognized
as one of the best in the nation in his profession.
Barnhart was one of four Division I ADs named
a NCAA Division I Athletics Director of the Year
in June at the annual convention of the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
A month earlier, Barnhart was one of four
finalists for the Athletics Director of the Year as
chosen by the SportsBusiness Journal. And, in
February, Barnhart received the Sports Business
Award from the Bluegrass Sports Commission.
It is no coincidence that Barnharts multiple
accolades came in the same year as the completion
of his 15 by 15 by 15 Plan, an ambitious blueprint
set in 2008 in which Kentucky would rank in the
nations top 15 athletic programs and win 15
conference or national championships by 2015.
At the same time, Barnhart set a goal of a 3.0
composite grade-point average for UK studentathletes and an even greater commitment to
community service by Wildcat athletes and staff.
The academic goal was first achieved in
the spring semester of 2010 and has an active
streak of six consecutive 3.0 semesters, hitting a
peak in spring 2014 with a school-record 3.218
composite GPA. Community service has risen to
more than 4,000 hours annually and includes
outreach to the Lexington area, the state and as
far away as Ethiopia.

The Directors Cup objective

was reached a year early when
UK ranked at a school-record
No. 11 in the 2013-14 national
all-sports standings.The Wildcats
followed with a No. 22 ranking
in 2014-15, marking the third
consecutive year that UK landed
in the top 25.
The final goal was reached in
March when UK mens basketball
claimed
the
Southeastern
Conference Tournament title,
the 15th championship won by
Wildcat athletes since 2008.
Barnharts 15 by 15 by 15 Plan
started by providing funds for full
coaching staffs and scholarship
allotments for all 22 UK sports.
Next, Barnhart constructed
new facilities, including the Joe Craft Center; new
stadiums for track and field, softball and soccer;
the UK Golf House; and the Wildcat Coal Lodge
dormitory. Currently, Commonwealth Stadium is
completing major renovations and a new football
practice/office complex is underway. A new
baseball stadium and indoor tennis facility are
on the drawing board. All totaled, Barnhart has
completed or is in the process of approximately
$297 million of facility construction.
Even with the departments growth and the
increasingly competitive nature of college sports,
UK Athletics has remained financially selfsufficient under Barnharts management,
operating with a balanced budget and with
the help of no state or University funds. Seeing
pressing facility needs on campus as well,
Barnhart has made a $65 million commitment
for athletics to fund nearly two-thirds of the new
Academic Science Building. He also directs
an annual $1.7-million contribution to the
Universitys scholarship program.
Barnhart is a native of Kansas City, Kansas.
He earned his bachelors degree from Ottawa
University (Kansas) in 1981 and a masters in
sports administration from Ohio University.
Barnharts family includes his wife,
Connie; three children, Blaire, Scott, and Kirby
Willoughby; Kirbys husband, McKenzie, and a
grandson, Cooper.
