If it looks Green

DOESNT MEAN
It is Green

CEOs Note
Religious festivals are innate part of
our lives. In fact these festivals are a
way of passing our cultural heritage
from one generation to another.
However, these festivals have a deep
impact on our environment. Some of
the practices like burning
recrackers, immersing offerings in the river etc create
much pollution. Initially traditional festivals were about
cleaning our homes and enhancing the natural beauty
around us. With time these festivals have become
highly unsustainable in nature.

In the land of spirituality,

humanity has existed since
its early stages. Over these
years, the relationship
between humanity and
nature was of love and coexistence. However, since
the start of modern century,
anthoprogenic activities has
led to such destruction and
degradation, that the very
ethos of Indian way of life is
being questioned. Home to all
major religions in the world, the world's 2nd most populous country celebrates
its festivals with much extragavanza. Nowadays, its more of entertainment
activities for people than prayers and blessings of Gods. The challenge is that if
India continues to celebrate similarly, there will be more sorrows than
happiness. From polluting the water bodies to carbon emissions, there is
nothing that is spared. This inreversible damage is already posing grave
threats to life on earth. It's high time that India take the opportunity of festivals to
thank mother earth and to please forgive us as we walk on her.

I believe that respecting and conserving nature is at the

core of all our traditions. That is why many plants, trees
and rivers are considered holy and are worshiped in
India. The old customs which always complimented the
environment should be brought back in practice.
I wish all these festivals will bring more happiness in
your lives and I also hope that you will do your bit to
make the festive celebration Eco-friendly.

Food for Thought

Diwali is not just a national holiday in India. In fact,
it is holiday in Trinidad & Tobago, Myanmar, Nepal,
Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Guyana, Surinam,
Singapore, Malaysia and Fiji.

After the night of Diwali approximately 4,000

additional metric tonnes of garbage are released
in Delhi alone, and twice the amount in Mumbai. In
Bangalore, garbage collection is increased by 800
to 1000 tons during these times whereas Chennai
produces 50 tons more of this garbage.

Pollution caused to the ecology during Diwali's

On the night of Diwali, 20 out of 26 air quality monitoring stations

across India recorded 'severe' air quality at midnight. Delhi's air
quality even surpassed than that of China. Levels spiked to 985
microgrammes per cubic metre at 9.20 pm on Diwali night in RK
Puram, as against the WHO's safe standard of 60.
During Holi, apart from wastage of precious clean water, more
than 10,000 cases are reported for loss of eye-sight. The black,
grey, grease colours consists of mercuric oxides, lead,
aluminum bromide etc. that cause kidney failure, skin damages
and other fatal infections.
Idol immersion, especially during Durga Puja and Ganesh
Chaturthi creates havoc polluting water bodies across the
country. About 1,500 idols were immersed in the river at
different ghats in Kolkata on October 22 and another 3,500 on
October 25. More than 40,000 in Hyderabad and over 50,000
Ganesh idols was immersed in Mumbai this year in September.
