The Other Four Senses
Introduction (5 Minutes):
Since last week, we spoke about sight and imagery, today there will be three stations to
help students grasp the other four senses. Sound will be station 1, touch will be station 2,
and smell and taste will be grouped together in station 3. Each station will last exactly
ten minutes and students will rotate from station to station until all three students have
completed all 3 stations (this should take approximately 30 minutes total.)
Station 1- Sound (10 Minutes):
In this station, students will listen to five sounds (each one is 30 seconds long or less)
that I have already screened and deemed school-appropriate, which will be located on a
specialized playlist on my Spotify that I made for Early College. To keep them on task,
the student will only be allowed to listen to those sounds and will not click away from
the playlist I have created. I will bring in headphones, so that the students in the sound
station will not disturb anyone in the room while they listen to the song. While they are
listening to these sounds they will answer the guided questions provided for them in the
packet.
Station 2- Touch (10 Minutes):
Here I will bring in items with different textures and place each item in a separate
shoebox and cut a hole in the top of each shoebox. There will be about 4-5 items in 4-5
separate shoeboxes. The student will feel each texture through each hole on each
shoebox. Then, on their packet, they will describe what each item feels like and guess
what it is. After doing so, they will decide which guess they are most sure is correct and
write from the perspective of the object that they think is focusing on how the object
feels.
Station 3- Smell/Taste (10 Minutes):
For the smell/taste station, I will first ask the students if they have any food allergies or
dietary restrictions. Then I will give them four of five very small portions of food (an
example would be a cracker or a grape) and tell them to close their eyes while smelling
and then eating each piece of food. Then they will record what each piece of food smells
and tastes like. If they already know that they dont like a particular food or especially if
they are allergic or have dietary needs, they may opt out of actually eating it or even
smelling it (depending on the severity of the allergy, etc), but they must either record
what it smells and tastes like anyway or pick another food, use their imagination, and
write down what it smells and tastes like.
Students Pick a Prompt (15 Minutes):
After all three students have completed all three stations, they will each pick one of the
following prompts (whichever one they are most interested in) and use what theyve
written in their packets to help them:

Prompt Option 1: Write a story or a poem based on one or more of the sounds you
listened to. What type of scene do you imagine when you hear that/those sound(s)?
Prompt Option 2: Write a story or poem from the perspective of one or more of the
items in the shoebox that you touched. Based on the texture of the object, how does the
object feel?
Prompt Option 3: Write a story or a poem that includes one or more of the flavors and
scents you experienced in Station #3. What kinds of thing do these flavors and scents
make you think of?
If they finish one of these prompts before time is up, they are allowed either to add more
to what theyve already written or pick another prompt to try until time is up.
Sharing and Reflection (10 Minutes):
Here, students will share what theyve written and reflect on their experience. The
reflection question of the week is, How did it feel to write about the senses? What does
writing using your five senses do for your writing?
