The Pastors Corner

Have Faith, Trust & Follow
By Rev. Molly Moore
t was just about 6 years ago when the great Missouri United
IMethodist
Church family welcomed my family. We were
overjoyed to be a part of this church and felt at home almost
instantly. Six years it has passed in the blink of an eye.
My time with you, professionally, has been as your Pastor of
Church Life and Growth, and together we have journeyed
through faith in worship, small groups, all-church events, and
prayer. But my time with you has not just been professional
how can it be, when faith and fellowship are involved? In my
time as your pastor, as I have sought to offer grace, guidance,
and growth opportunities,YOU have offered those same
things to me. When you experienced hurt, confusion, loss
and setback, I was thankful for how you trusted me to
share those moments with you. When I experienced
those same moments for myself, I was humbled by
your presence alongside me. The same with joys and
celebrations in life I was privileged to be by your side
and have so enjoyed having you by mine.

Center works to build the connections between CMU and the

UMC of Missouri. I am sure that Missouri UMC will be one of
my stops, and we will see each other then. Until that day, my
children will continue to make MUMC their home while I am
out and about traveling through Missouri. I am grateful for the
ways you will continue to love them and help them grow in
faith and grace.
My prayer for you as we part comes from Numbers 6:24-26:
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to
shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his
countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.

As my season as your pastor at Missouri UMC comes

to an end, I hold fast to the friendships and memories
made. I know this has been a wild season of change
for the church, as it has been for your pastors, as well!!
But I do so believe that more good things are in store
for Missouri UMC in the days, months, and years ahead.
God leads, equips, and calls (not always in that order!),
and our job is to have faith, trust, and follow.
On July 1, I start my new journey as the Director of
the Center for Faith and Service at Central Methodist
University. Part of that ministry will include visits to
the many UMC congregations across Missouri as the

Stained Glass Mystery

Rev. Jim Bryans sermon on Sunday brought up some questions

about the symbols depicted in the glass panels he was discussing.
In case you were curious too, we asked an expert--David M.
May, Ph.D. Professor of New Testament, Director of Online
Curriculum Design at Central Baptist Theological Seminary.
Heres his take on these symbols:
It makes sense that we have a sword (over greenery/palm) in
Matthew. Matthew is the only Gospel that has this particular
saying of Jesus: Do not think that I have come to bring peace on
earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword (Matthew
10:34). Interestingly this saying is from the Q source but Luke
modifies it by leaving out the part about the sword. I have to say
that this would be a strange and peculiar image to evoke from
Matthew; however, perhaps it to be seen(read) in connection with
almost the same motif in the John window.
In the John window, in contrast to the Matthean window, the palm is covering the sword. No doubt here is
a different type (contrasting?) of emphasis, that is, Jesus story is not about bringing violence(the sword) but
peace. Johns Gospel does emphasize peace: I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In
the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world! (John 16:33 NRSV). Also in
the Gospel of John we have the detailed account of the sword being used and cutting off the ear of Malchus.
Jesus admonition to Peter was to Put your sword into its sheath (John 18:11). The creator of windows
might be using the sword/palm and the palm/sword as a type of bookend of the Gospels related to violence.
It could illustrate the tension within the Gospels themselves over this issue.
