Sleep Addiction Script
Narrator: Ever wonder what its like to be a college student? Well, Ill tell you! The typical
college student is stressed out, constantly hungry, and completely and utterly broke. Wipes smile
completely off her face and is completely serious. But worst of all, the typical college student is
affected by sleep addiction.
Voice-over: In a 2014 study by the US Bureau of Medicine, it was found that sleep addiction
affects 98.4% of college students. And that rate is climbing. Chances are, youll be affected by
sleep addiction at some point in your life.
Voice-over: Sleep addiction is a psychological and physiological disorder that causes the victim
to choose a healthy nights rest over an additional eight hours of productivity. This wasted time
can negatively impact the entire scope of the victims life, from academics to social life.
Official Notre Dame Faculty Member: Here at Notre Dame, the administration strives to
combat this dire issue through a strict regimen of unnecessary homework assignments and strong
encouragement to participate in an excessive number of extracurricular activities to maintain
some semblance of sanity.
Voice-over: Despite this, some students still manage to fuel their addiction through naps or
even...through sleeping for several hours at night. Its tragic.

Voice-over: It is important to keep in mind that if you want to get good grades in your classes,
sleep is not a priority. In fact, sleep is the enemy. Whatever you do, do not give into the
temptation of sleep.
Student Testimony #1: I am affected by sleep addiction. I have an 8:20 lecture every Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday morning and I have already slept through one of the lectures because I
was so exhausted from writing my eight page paper the night before. Now, I have a C in the
class. Let that be a reminder to you all that sleep is not your friend.
Student Testimony #2: Well I havent slept in five days, but Im totally fine. Id rather do
homework and study for exams at three in the morning than get a good nights sleep. Like my
parents always told me, sleep is for the weak.
Expert Testimony #1: Its absolutely tragic. I have seen so many promising, intelligent students
affected by this addiction. They sleep for three hours and then---BAM! Next thing you know,
they are failing out of all of their classes.
Student Testimony #3: I guess you could say Im addicted to sleep. I mean I get eight hours of
sleep each night, and apparently that isnt normal for most people my age. I just hide in the
library all day and cut off contact with the outside world. Like, who needs a social life anyways?
Uneasily laughs. But I still have friends. See, shes my friend, right, Carla?
Background Girl: Looks up with a disgusted look. My name is Hailey.
Student #3: Right, right, ha ha ha
