In today's society, materialism takes part in every person's life, no matter what social class they are.

The
idea of being materialistic can be considered immoral, but there is a fine line between morality and
personal interests. It is safe to say that everybody is materialistic to a certain extent, whether it be from
buying the same brand of jeans because they fit nice, topurchasing a wide variety of hot rods. It is
obvious that the latter of the two is the one which can be considered to cross the line. Buying some nice
clothes here and there is normal for people and everybody does it once in a while. While on the other
hand, buying 5 or 6 sportscars can be considered somewhat pretentious. There are many factors that go
into a person being immoral based on the materials that they have. Greed and excessive luxuries are
what can determine the immorality of a person. Growing up in a fairly affluent community, it was easy to
distinguish the differences amongst different social classes and the way which they present themselves in
the community.

It was a time of conservatism, and a time of social change. From the world of fashion to the world to
politics, materialistic forms clashed together to produce the most explosive decade of the century. Among
these materialistic forms was fashion. Fashion has always made a great impact on social change, and
especially during this period. Part of the fashion change occurred on college campuses, through sports

I have come to believe that materialism has become a way of life in today’s society. Materialism has been defined as the
theory or doctrine that physical well being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life.

to make things and people behave or respond the way we desire. We have become so successful at fabricating and
manipulating the world that we have come to believe that altering our surroundings is the way to solve all of our problems.
We go through life contemplating that inner well being depends on what we have or do. Due to these assumptions,
materialism now carries the status that people’s religion, occupations, and bloodlines used to carry

It is human nature for people to desire material possessions. Our material yearnings are an attempt to
satisfy are need to special and wanted. In a world where most of society defines “socially acceptable” as
the material possessions one owns such as, the latest clothing, the biggest house, or the fastest car one
comes to believe that you need all of these things to be viewed as a part of society. For many, work has
taken over community life and has had a major effect on happiness. Advertising has also become a
primary determinant of our satisfaction, and is only a small part of a larger materialistic culture in which
we are not only enticed customers but also prominent consumers. We have been beguiled into believing
that material possessions will bring satisfaction and happiness. We imagine ourselves as being more
than we are and in this we see how powerful images are.
