Say Yes for Censorship!

Television is like the world which everything can be watched. Many programs
can be looked at such as film, competition, movie, concert, advertisement, and news.
Everything can be seen when I watch television in my home. Television can influence
someone to do something bad or something good. Sometimes, television helps teacher
to teach the students whom helps students to study. The information that we get from
television is important for learning and teaching. In Indonesia, sometimes, the
information has something which is forbidden to see. Watching something bad on
television, therefore, influences children in the future. How can we prevent it? The
answer is by adding censorship. The term of censorshipsis all about policy about what
can people see or what can people listen to. Censorship can be due by Indonesia
censorship of film institution. Sometimes, it is debated in Indonesia. Some actors reject
it because of artistic. It is curbed freedom of expression but itis the filter of programs. I
argue that supporting censorship programs on television is really important.
Censorship protects viewer from violence program. According to Gifford
(2010), Censorship is the attempt to stop people from accessing material that are seen as
inappropriate or harmful. Violence can be classified as sexual, sadistic, and death
violence. Petley argue that guide lines do, however, contain a useful list of types of
material which are most likely to face cuts namely:

Material which promote illegal activity.

Material which is obscene or otherwise illegal.
Material created by means of commission of criminal offence.
Portrayals of children in a sexualized or abusive context.
Sexual violence or sexualized violence which endorses or eroticizes the

behavior.
Sadistic violence or torture which invites the viewer to identify with the

perpetrator in way which raises a risk of harm.

Graphic images of real injury, violence or death presented in salacious or
sensationalist manner which risk harm by encouraging callous or sadistic

attitudes.
Sex works which contain material listed as unacceptable at RI8.

The material which is cut is containing violence. As you know, the children must be
protected from the violence.
In addition, the risk of violence is harmful for the child. The parent knows how
dangerous violence is for children. It helps the parent to protect their child. Sometimes,
they cannot sit beside them to watch television in a whole day. Vera (18 years old as
cited in Gifford, 2013) says When I go to the cinema, I want to be entertained, to
escape from ugliness of real life. Nowadays, you may see sex, drug and violence at the
movie which leads to a rise in crime. I believe all this fifth should be banned from our
screen. In the future, the child will identify that it is dangerous. Someone who punches
and attacks a person is interesting to watch but it is painful for child. In Indonesia,
Violence is dangerous, so it must be forbidden for the child.
It clears programs on television from porn content or sexual violence content.
Hughes(1990, as cited in Gottfried, 2006) states that porn content can be classified as
obscenity, child pornography, harmful to the minor, broadcast indecency, erotic and
semi-nude. Herman (2008) argue that electronic cinema, film, drama, music or clip
music, reality show and advertisement are contain porn content. Porn content is
dangerous for child. The American Humanist (2012) stated that porn is problematic. It is
an exhausting issue with an unending debate that deeply divides us. An obvious
obstruction to dealing with the issue of pornography lies in the publics inability to
collectively identify what this ambiguous entity is. Many people confuse porn for a
cheaper, less refined form of erotica, but the two are fundamentally different. While
both are forms of sexual representation, pornography is defined by the abuse and
degradation of the people involved. Because of porn, your life is broken. The porn will
influence you to do masturbation and to do rape a woman. It is very dangerous for
humans life then it influences the brain. When someone has been married to you, the
porn affects your life never happy with your date. It directs you which are divorce. After
that, your life is broken. To the child, it is very dangerous. Porn will influence greater
rather than adult. It can be created child become a criminal. So, Censorship protect
human from porn content to save your future.
It selects good film that shows on television. However, it is not curbed freedom
of expression. The censorship was done by Indonesia censorship of film institution. The
Censorship film could consequent which will agree film, cut some part of film, and

reject it (8th Act Republic of Indonesia 1992 about film). The film that was shown on
television is passed censor. This is very important, because it has positive impact; the
film also has a negative impact, so that the necessary role of Indonesia censorship of
film institution as a final filter on the work of the film before it was shown. Therefore,
all the films shown to the public, especially of a commercial nature should pass the
sensor, including all performances and or screening on television, both channels of free
television and pay television (Nainggolan, 2014). It helps protecting child from bad
content. As you can see, good film that has selected by Indonesiascensorship of film
institution is shown on television.
Furthermore, the censorship decides how old is someone should beto watch the
program on television. Each person cannot watch all television programs. There were
filter to select who can watch this film. Both Indonesias censorship of film institution
and Indonesias broadcasting commission selected who could watch the movie. They
made a range of age to watch the movie. The classification of the event defined by the
KPI that classification P, for Pre-school, aged 2 to 6 years. Classification A, for children,
age 7 to 12 years, R classification, for teens, ages 13 to 17 years. Classification D, for
adults, aged over 18 years. Classification SU, for all ages, above 2 years. (Lembaga
Penyiaran Wajib Siarkan Klasifikasi Acara, 2012). As a result, everybody cannot watch
all television programs as it is classified by age.
Finally, the censorship avoids hostility which creates social harmony in society.
Indonesia had more than 740 ethnics (Hanifah, 2008). The risk of divorce was bigger
than another country. There were 6 religions in Indonesia. They were Islamic, Christian,
Buddhist, Hinduism, Conghuchu.

Broadcasting is forbidden about calumny, violence

and debating about ethnic in Indonesia (32th Act Republic of Indonesia 2002 about
broadcasting). Because of unity, Television does not broadcast about debating religion.
The debating religion affect divorced so broadcasting about religions is forbidden.
The censorship which protects the child is useful. It helps parent to save their
child from violence and pornography content. The content is harmful for child in future.
Then, the censorship helps to select and to classify the content. The last, it helps saving
social harmony. As a result, the censorship is really needed in Indonesia.
