Explanation of "Chartrain.

xls"

By Chris Gonzalez

This is an updated version of the original "chartrain.xls." Like the original, its purpose is to help you identify an ideal training program for
your characters; however, it uses some more advanced Excel tools to (hopefully) make this process easier for you. This guide will take
you through the new model, attempting to describe how it works.

Class Growth Inputs

The growth statistics for each class are entered in this section--from here, they drive various calculations through the model. It also
contains a column titled "Level Available," which is intended to constrain the model's output to sensible results (i.e., not recommending
that one train as a Soldier for 6 levels and a Terror Knight for 43 levels). The levels inputted in this section were determined by
estimating the level at which each class becomes available (based on average growth statistics). If you find that your character does
not gain access to a class at the level specified, you can change the value in this column accordingly.

Method 1: Character Training Based on Defined Objectives

This section allows you to define your objectives in training a character. The "primary objective(s)" are the areas in which you want to
focus your character's development; the "secondary objective(s)" are areas in which you want to place secondary emphasis. Check the
relevant boxes to define your objectives. You will also find a section where you can select your character's alignment--this decision
determines which classes are to be included in the calculations.

Class Ranking
This is where the majority of the calculations are done. The first part of the calculation is to determine a ranking for each class, based on
the objectives defined above. Points are awarded to each class in two categories:
Primary Objective Points: For each primary objective defined, each class is awarded a number of objective points that is equal to the
number of points that they gain in the selected areas. For example, if the HP box is checked as a primary objective, the Soldier class gets
8 primary objective points (since they gain an average of 8 HP per level).
Secondary Objective Points: For each secondary objective defined, each class is awarded a number of objective points that is equal to half
of the number of points that they gain in the selected areas--the number of points is discounted to reflect the fact that these objectives
are of secondary importance. For example, if the HP box is checked as a secondary objective, the Soldier class gets 4 secondary
objective points (since they gain an average of 8 HP per level).
Once primary and secondary objective points are awarded, the next step is to assign a ranking to each class. A class' ranking is based on
the total number of objective points that it has--choosing both primary and secondary objectives will help reduce the number of ties.
Classes that are inaccessible (due to the alignment selection above) do not have any objective points, and are left out of the ranking.

Training Program
The next step is to determine a training program based on the ranking. Ideally, you would train exclusively as the highest-ranked
class--however, this is not always possible as some classes are not available until your character reaches a certain level. In such cases,
the class with the second highest rank is used; in the rare case that the class ranked second highest is not available, the class ranked
third highest is used. Classes that tie in the ranking are chosen for training based on their order on the list--generally speaking,
lower-level classes (Berzerker, Ninja) are recommended before higher-level classes (Terror Knight, Sword Master) because they are
available at earlier levels (this also helps reduce the chance that the model will return an infeasible solution).
Sometimes, the calculations do not yield a complete training program (49 level gains)--as a result, the actual calculations are done in a
column to the right of the visible table. These calculations are then converted into a distribution, which is then re-applied to a complete
training program of 49 levels.

Character Status
This section projects the characters status based on the training program above. The shaded green cell allows you to input the level
that you want to project to--the model calculates your character's average growth statistics (which is a weighted average of the classes in
your training program), and uses these statistics to predict your character's status at the level you specify.
Method 2: Customized Training
This section consists of a series of buttons that you can push to develop a character to your liking. You should keep the number of
levels gained at or below 49, the maximum number of levels that a character can gain (without Necro or Retissue). The table at the
bottom of the section shows you the projected status of "standard" characters, based on average stat gains for comparative purposes.

And that's about it! I hope that you find this model to be an improvement to the previous version. If you have any questions, feel free
to contact me at crg@alumni.princeton.edu. Best of luck to you in your training!
