SECTION A
Answer FIVE of the six questions from this Section, worth 50 marks in total.
If all six questions are answered, the best five answers will be taken into account.

(a)

Define surface charge density and surface current density.

Consider Coulombs law expressed as E r

r R

[2]

d .
R2
(i) Draw a diagram that illustrates the relationship between r, r & R .
(ii) Use the delta function to convert this equation to a surface integral in terms of the
surface charge density.
[3]
Use the result of (b)(ii) to calculate the electric field a distance z from a flat sheet of
charge, of infinite extent, and with surface charge density . You may, for reduced
marks, find E instead by using Gauss law.
[5]
The Levi-Civita tensor ijk has one particular element 123 1 . Write down the rules
for the indices that are used to obtain the other elements.
[2]
Prove that V 0 for any scalar field V.
[4]
In terms of the work done in moving a test charge, show that the electric field of a
static charge distribution is a conservative field.
[4]
Show that the potential at a distance z above the centre of a circular loop with radius a

and uniform lineal charge density is V z

[5]

(b)

A uniformly charged solid disk has radius a and surface charge density . Use, or
adapt, the expression for V(z) in part (a) to find the potential on the axis of this disk, at
a distance z from its centre.

(a)

What is the magnetic flux passing through a circular loop of wire of radius 1 m lying
on the table, where the earths magnetic field is 0.06 mT in magnitude and pointing
into the earth at 45 to the horizontal.
[2]
Convert .B 0 using Gauss theorem to show that, at the boundary between two
materials, the component of the magnetic field B that is perpendicular to the boundary
is the same on both sides of the boundary.
[4]
Use the Biot-Savart law to find the magnetic field at the centre of a circular loop of
wire. The loop has radius a and carries current I.

(b)

Explain why Amperes law B 0 J is inconsistent with the continuity relation

.J , and explain how can Amperes law be modified to remove this

inconsistency.

SECTION B
Answer ONE of the two questions from this Section, worth 10 marks in total.
If both questions are answered, the best answer will be taken into account.

A wire carrying a current of 2 A is wound tightly around a straight iron rod (with r 10 4 ).
There are 1000 turns of wire per metre.
(a)

If the iron rod were protruding partly from the coil at one end, explain why there
would be a force pulling it into the coil.

(b)

Calculate the magnitudes of

(i) the magnetic field B in the iron,
(ii) the magnetisation M in the iron, and
(iii) the bound surface current density in the iron
[10]

A coaxial cable consists of a copper wire, radius 0.5 mm, surrounded by a concentric copper
tube of inner radius 2.5 mm. The space between the wire and the tube is filled with a
material of dielectric constant K = 4. For a 1 m length of cable assume that the inner and
outer conductor have charges 1 nC and 1 nC respectively. Find
(a)

|D| at distance 1 mm from the centre of the cable.

(b)

|E| at distance 1 mm from the centre of the cable.

(c)

|P| at distance 1 mm from the centre of the cable.
