Hopatcong Man Uses Beekeeping As Therapy

By Jane Primerano
ollinators are essential to human life. Nearly every
plant-based food relies on pollination from insects.

The most familiar pollinators are honey bees, a species

that has faced a crisis over the past several years. Nicotine-based herbicides wreck havoc with the immune system of honeybees. Exposure to these Herbicides leaves
the bees susceptible to the varroa mite which invades the

digestive system and makes it difficult for them to gain

nutrition from what they eat. The resulting Colony Collapse Disorder has decimated beehives for the past few
years.
While CCD seems to be lessening, beekeeping is still
not an easy job. But it has rewards. For Jim Puccio, the
rewards include helping him get over a trauma.
He worked in the Financial District, always in his office by 7:45 a.m.
But one day, a series of circumstances had him on the
sidewalk after 8 a.m. And a plane passed over his head.
Flying strangely low.
Puccios office was on the 102 Floor, the Northeast
corner of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. And
he was on the sidewalk on Sept. 11, 2001.
Survivor guilt led him to therapy. Then his therapist
said, you dont need a shrink, become a beekeeper.
He took that advice, starting as a hobby seven years
ago then, he admits it became an addiction.
His wife, Christine, is high school math teacher in
Essex County. She ran the numbers and decided it could
work as a business.
Last year, the Puccios bought a house in Hopatcong
where Puccio built hives and embarked on a new career.
While Christine continues to teach, Jim owns or has access to property in Whippany, Parisippany, Mendham,
Morris Plains and Denville for a total of 600 hives.
Its hard work, but its relaxing, he explained,
adding, The weather sets your deadlines. He admitted
to being more responsibility-oriented than deadline-oriented. Wintering is the hard part, he said, noting he
wraps the hives in tar paper and has a windscreen on the
north and west side. He only lost two hives through the

tough winter. He attributes that partly to closing the hives

properly.
Jim and Christine are expanding their farming activities
into an orchard. They bought a former apple orchard and
are clearing between three and five acres to plant 2,500
dwarf apple, peach, pear and cherry trees. Puccio believes
the property will be good for a pick-your-own operation.
Another aspect to his new career is hive-building. He
discovered the old-fashioned Kirkhoff hives seems to help
bees over-winter and he hopes to eventually sell them.
Both Jim and Christine got involved in Hopatcong almost as soon as moving in. They set up a booth at the
Hopatcong Festival last summer, selling honey and educating visitors about bees and beekeeping.
The bees
are gentle, Christine Puccio commented. If you get in
their path, you can get stung, she told some visitors, if
you stay on the side you wont.
Weve always respected nature, Christine said,
happy to be in a small town in a rural part of the state.
Puccio said his Irish-Italian background led him to believe he should always help others. He is willing to give
advice to hobby beekeepers when asked.

Hopatcong Hosts Teen For

Career Exploration

he Hopatcong Womans Club sponsors local teens for Girls' Career Institute (GCI), an annual program
held at Douglass College in New Brunswick
and sponsored by the NJ State Federation of
Womens Clubs for high school Junior girls
to explore women's issues and encourage
awareness to contemporary problems.
It offers a "mini college experience" on
the campus of the Douglass College part of
Rutgers University where delegates experience a sample of college life by living in a
dorm, eating in a cafeteria, attending lectures and workshops. They learn about career choices from volunteer professional
speakers and how to network with other delegates from all over the state of New Jersey.
Many attendees establish lasting friendships
with one another.

This years GCI program is planned for

June 6 - 9, 2016 and local interested juniors
should contact their schools guidance counselor for information on the application
process. The GCI application must be returned to the Guidance Office by March 11.
Delegates are sponsored and the cost is
underwritten by a local NJSFWC club. Delegates are selected on the basis of interest,
community service and participation in
school activities.
Join the Hopatcong Womans Club on
the third Wednesday of each month from
Sept. through May, at 10:30 a.m. at the
Hopatcong Senior Center. Evening meet and
greets are held on the same days from 6
p.m.-8 p.m. For more information, call
Selma Reichert at 973-770-4989.

Technology Fundraiser...
continued from frot page
gether they created the first Annual Technology Fundraising Event. Dalesandro said this
fundraiser is extremely important because it
allows us to raise funds for resources that will
ensure our students will continue to thrive as
21st Century learners. Dalesandro hopes that
this will be an annual event for many years
to come and that all money raised will pro-

vide continuing improvements to help make

Netcong Schools technology second to none.
Dalesandro also initiated incentives to sell
dinner tickets as well. At this point in time,
any Netcong School staff member will get
their name entered into a drawing to win a
$100 gift card for every dinner ticket purchased.

Local Expert Shows NJ Parents

How To Get The Most Money For Their
Childrens College Education

ew Jersey parents suffering with

finding ways to pay for their childrens college education can finally
get the solutions to their college funding
problems.
Most families who earn $75,000 or more
and own a home assume they are not eligible
for financial aid. However, most families
with income over $100,000 are actually eligible for some types of need based financial aid. They simply need to know how to
get their fair share.
According to Newell, there are several
easy things parents can do to substantially increase the amount of money they get from
colleges. For example, There are several
schools that historically give better financial
aid packages than others, says Newell. If
families do proper income and asset planning
before filling out the forms, they can increase
eligibility by thousands of dollars.
Newell offers a few simple tips to parents
with college funding problems. If a parent

Netcong Volunteers Help Clear Snow

he entire east coast was hit with the 2016 Blizzard on

Jan. 23 but that didnt stop volunteers at Netcong
School to step up to the snow.
In these conditions many school districts had difficulty
finding places to move the snow and clearing sidewalks and
entrances. And what happens when the school districts snow
blower breaks down? Well, at Netcong Elementary School,
no job is too big or small for volunteers.
On Sun., Jan. 24, the Netcong School maintenance crew
was clearing snow all morning and afternoon. On the tail end
of the job, the schools snow blower broke and there were
still sidewalks that needed to be cleared. When Chief School
Administrator, Dr. Gina Cinotti became aware of this situation, she took her own snow blower to the school and began
to clear the sidewalks.
There was a sense of urgency to ensure we could open
school tomorrow, said Cinotti. I cant open school with
sidewalks not cleared. How would kids safely walk to
school.
Board President David Costanzo saw Cinotti and immediately pitched in to help out. He solicited the help of a neighbor and friend he grew up with in Netcong, Jeremy Stevens.
Netcongs small town feel is not just that; its a sense of
community that transfers over to the school culture, says
Costanzo. Dr. Cinottis energy and dedication to Netcong
School is contagious. Anything I can do as a Netcong alumnus, resident, and board president, I am going to do. I was

happy to roll up my sleeves, dig in and help prepare the building/grounds for student safety.
Stevens used his own quad with an attached plow and
cleared one of the sidewalks that connects to the crosswalk.

ssex County Turtle Back Zoo is recruiting volunteers

for the 2016 Docent Class. Docents are volunteer educators who give educational talks, act as tour guides,
and are stationed throughout the Zoo to provide information
to visitors about the Zoo and its animal collection. This is a
highly selective volunteer position and training is required.
Our docents help every visitor have an enjoyable and
memorable experience at our zoo, said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Whether walking through
our zoo grounds or making presentations in schools or at
community events, our docents are volunteer ambassadors
who share their love and knowledge about animals and their
habitats, and encourage the public to have respect for the environment. If you love animals, we encourage you to attend
the training course and become a Turtle Back Zoo docent.
New docents must be at least 18 years old and complete a
six-day course instructed by experienced TBZ staff. Training
will begin on Sun., Feb. 14 and continue on Sundays through
the end of March. There is a non-refundable fee of $25 which
covers training materials and handouts. The application for
the class can be accessed at http://turtlebackzoo.com/docentvolunteers/.
If interested, contact the Zoos volunteer coordinator at
tbzdocents@yahoo.com or call 973-731-5800, ext. 306 for
more information.

Netcong Elementary Schools Middle Schoolers Learn To H.E.L.P. Each Other

n Wed., Jan. 20, students in grades five through

eight attended an assembly with Keith Hawkins as
part of Netcong Elementary Schools Culture and
Climate Initiative. Hawkins has dedicated his life to improving the human race by helping people to strive for personal
change in their lives.
Students participated in various activities during the assembly, which theme was students H.E.L.P.ing each other.
The acronym stands for Honor, Encourage, Lead, and Protect and is a motto that the school will incorporate into our
daily language at Netcong Elementary School. Hawkins discussed with students what is fun vs. funny and how playful teasing can easily turn into hurting someones feelings.
Students on the Student Safety Team worked with Hawkins
after the assembly to develop action plans to improve the
culture and climate at Netcong Elementary School.
Keith is a dynamic and engaging presenter who gets
through to students, said Kathleen Walsh, assistant principal. He does not present fluff to the students but rather
makes his message tangible and shows students that they
do in fact have a voice and that they can make a difference
in the lives of others,
As part of Netcongs School Culture and Climate Initiative, Netcong Elementary School has partnered with the
College of St. Elizabeth, The United Way and The Center
for Prevention in Newton to address the schools culture and

climate. Walsh was able to secure a coordinated school

health grant from The Center of Prevention to address
school culture and climate. As a result of the grant, Walsh
was able to administer school surveys to all stakeholders
and have Hawkins present at the school.

The support provided to us to improve school culture

and climate by these three organizations is invaluable and
we are grateful that we have the opportunity to work with
the dedicated individuals who represent each of the three
groups, Walsh said.

etcong School participated in their

first Souper Bowl
Not the football game, the
Souper Bowl of Caring! It's
changing the game of football into a game of caring
where schools and organizations collect canned soup
for a local food pantry.
This year, the gifted and
talented students in grades
three through eight in Netcong planned, coordinated,
and executed the event. The
students created signs to
promote the Souper Bowl,
they encouraged their fellow students to participate
by visiting classrooms to
discuss the importance of
their donations and how it
effects their community.
The students also used organizational skills to collect
data on the students that had
brought in cans of soup.

From left, are Michael Sheridan, Aris Zajaczkowski, Sophia OConnor, Emily Platt, Gianna Santana and Bella Hoffman.

Students used their food donation to cast their vote for

their favorite team in this
years "real" Super Bowl,
the Denver Broncos or the
Carolina Panthers.
There were a total of 336
cans collected. The Denver
Broncos was determined

the winner having received the most votes of

174. The Carolina Panthers
followed closely with 162.
All donations were given to
the United Methodist
Church in Stanhope.
Students record data during lunch time.

Jazz Quartet To Perform Release

Concert At Caldwell University

he Eric Olsen ReVision Jazz Group plans

to perform the release
concert for its CD Sea
Changes at Caldwell University 8 p.m. Thurs., Feb.
18, in the Alumni Theatre.
The album combines
classic melodies with jazz
improvisations, creating an
exciting new art experience
that transcends musical
boundaries, says Olsen, a
jazz and classical pianist and
composer. It gives familiar
and beautiful melodies a new
framework from which listeners can find their own
deeply musical connections.
Concert series director
Laura Greenwald says Olsen
is a superb musician whose
joy of performing is contagious. His introductions are

interesting and engaging, and

his playing is brilliant.
The jazz group is known
for fusing the emotion of
classic melodies with the fun
of jazz improvisation, transforming music from Chopin
to Grieg to George Harrison
in an innovative way.
As music director at
Union
Congregational
Church in Montclair, Olsen
has conducted and performed many staples of the
classical choral literature and

leads a jazz ensemble in his

own unique arrangements of
hymns and original works
for jazz services.
The snow date is Thurs.,
Feb. 25, at 8 p.m.
General admission for
most concerts is $20; tickets
for students and seniors are
$10. Tickets will be available
online, through mail order
and at the door. For more information, contact Greenwald at 973-618-3520.

Netcong Stanhope Rotary Club

Distribute To Dictionaries To Students

n Fri., Jan. 8, three members from the

Netcong Stanhope Rotary Club,
Kathleen Robbins, Carmine Ruocco,
and Charles Calabrese, came to Netcong Elementary School to distribute dictionaries to
students in third grade. This program, called
Gift Of Knowledge Project, is designed to
aid third grade teachers in their goal to create
confident writers, active readers and creative
thinkers.
Students in Jacqueline Cinottis third
grade class were very excited to receive their
dictionaries. Cinotti stated that the Gift Of
Knowledge Project is one that is integral to

the success of our students. Each student in

third grade receives his/her own dictionary to
use as a reference at home and at school. The
dictionaries help the students to develop their
vocabularies and to strengthen their writing
skills.
The Netcong Stanhope Rotary Club is a
community service organization that contributes to many local charities and other organizations. The Netcong Elementary School
is grateful for the donation of the dictionaries
and for all the Netcong Stanhope Rotary Club
members do for the surrounding community.

Board Members Sworn In To

Netcong BOE

New Netcong Board of Education members, from left, Kerri Santalucia, David Costanzo, Kelly
Stephens, Timothy Domick.

he four newly elected board of education members were sworn in by

Business Administrator/Board Secretary Nicole Sylvester at the Netcong
Board of Education (BOE) reorganization
meeting on Jan. 5. Taking the oath were:
David Costanzo, the top vote getter, serving a three year term; Timothy Domick,
serving a three year term; Kerri Santalucia, serving a three year term; Kelly
Stephens, serving a one year term.
The other business of the reorganization meeting was to select the leadership
for 2016. The Netcong BOE chose
Costanzo to take the gavel for the first
time as president. Costanzo brings a family history of educators and a strong business sense. He was nominated by Todd
Morton and won the vote 5-4.
Assuming the vice president position
was Morton, who has been on the board
for seven years.
Working closely with the community
and borough are key factors Costanzo
wants to ensure are continued. Board

committees were set up as well as community liaisons. A follow up Board Retreat will also be scheduled.
I am excited to embark on this leadership opportunity, says Costanzo. My intent is to keep us focused on our main
functions of being a board of education. I
also want to begin to think of our longterm planning regarding finances, facilities, and staffing, for the ultimate goal of
improving student achievement. I am a
lifelong Netcong resident with deep family roots here. I am in this for the long
haul and am determined to continue my
service by giving back to the educational
community who helped shape me into the
man I am. There are few districts and
communities like Netcong. Our administrators, staff, parents, students, and community is special because we all take a
part in the success and support of one another.
Costanzo will assume the Netcong
Board of Education presidency until the
Jan. 2017 Reorganization Meeting.

Unity Choir To Host Palm Sunday Concert

ollowers of the Unity

Choir will have another opportunity to
hear them on Palm Sunday,
March 20, at 4 p.m. when
they present Requiem by
Charles Gounod.
The concert will take
place at Newton First United
Methodist Church, in Newton. Henry Repp will conduct as well as accompany
on the three-manual Peragallo pipe organ. Merynda
Adams will enhance the
beauty of the music with her
harp. Returning soloists will
include soprano Cassandra
Lambros, alto Kathleen
Meredith, tenor Tom Carle,
and bass David Young.
Well-known for other
works including his Saint
Cecilia Mass, Gounod was
deeply moved by the death
of his grandson Maurice, and
he took up his pen once
again in his old age. He
wrote the first measures of
his Requiem for soloists,
chorus and orchestra on
March 21, 1891 and com-

pleted the work at the beginning of 1893. After putting

the finishing touches on the
Requiem for his grandson,
he died of a stroke in Saint
Cloud, France. The aged
composer did not live to hear
the Requiem's premiere during Holy Week in 1894.
Henry Repp, organist,
first played a Messiah concert forty years ago at First
Memorial
Presbyterian
Church in Dover. For the
upcoming concert, Repp will
also be directing the singers.
The skill of an organist directing while playing has become a lost art, and Repp is
a master of this art.
Repp became Director of
Music and organist at First
United Methodist Church in
Newton on Sept. 1, 2012 and
began the tradition of a Community Choir presentation on
Palm Sunday afternoon.
The Unity Choir developed as a result of a snowstorm in Dec.of 2013 which
caused the cancellation of the
Messiah concert at First Me-

director, from Netcong.

morial Presbyterian Church

in Dover. The disappointed
singers asked Repp if he
would organize a concert in
Newton, and the Unity Choir
was born.
The Unity Choir then presented Gounods St. Cecilia
Mass on Palm Sunday 2014
and Requiem by Gabriel
Faur in 2015.
There will be a free-will
offering and all are welcome.
The church is handicappedaccessible and has ample
parking.

Netcong School Features First Annual Movie Night

n Fri., Jan. 15, Netcong Elementary

School collaborated with The
Growing Stage to provide the first
annual Movie Night Fundraiser. Netcong
School students, parents, and community
members gathered at The Growing Stage in
town to see The Minions Movie.
In the early planning stages of this

fundraiser, Board Member Jennifer Santana

had the idea to create a fundraiser during
the winter months for Netcong School students. The most favored idea was to show
a movie at the local theatre at a discounted
price.
The Growing Stage Team helped make
the event possible by donating the time,

may be eligible for financial assistance through various programs. According to the American Association of
Retired Persons, older men and women
who want to go back to school do not necessarily have to bankroll that expenditure
on their own. AARP notes that the Internal
Revenue Service offers tax breaks such as
the American Opportunity Tax Credit and
the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit that
older students can take advantage of to

National

lessen the blow of tuition costs, which

have risen considerably since todays men
and women over 50 were in college. Older
men and women may also be able to take
advantage of 529 college savings accounts
they opened for their children that their
kids did not end up needing. AARP also
notes that men and women over 50 who
want to apply for financial aid must be
prepared to enroll in more than one class
and in more than just a continuing education program. More information is available at aarp.org.

lights, sound and popcorn. Sams Club of

Flanders donated six cases of water as well.
Tickets were $3 or $10 per family. Water
and popcorn were a $1 each.
Overall the Netcong School made more
than $500 to help raise money for student
activities. Middle School students volun-

teered to help sell the water/popcorn and

clean up at the end of the night.
Santana said, It was a great night getting to see the families of Netcong School
come out and enjoy themselves. The theater
was filled with laughter and a sense of community.
