Looking after our children naturally is not usually rocket science.

Common sense tells us that fresh air, sunlight, good food,
happiness, exercize, sleep etc will boost our immune system and
parents are becoming increasingly confident in this life style.
However, when it comes to looking after our teeth, many of us may
have accepted the preventative messages from the British Dental
Association, of using fluoride toothpaste, without realising that
there is so much more we can all do. And if we do have cavities or
abscesses then dentists can offer us fluoride coatings, fillings, root
canals, implants, crowns etc and we rarely question that
intervention.
Unless we go regularly to the dentist, and are vigilant and educated
about our teeth, often a visit is due to an emergency pain, so we
allow ourselves little time to seek second opinions or think about
prevention. Our general understanding of healthy teeth and
prevention of cavities has sat behind our knowledge of looking
after our health, but looking after your teeth naturally has been a
hot topic this year in my community and many on line forums.
The way I understand what I have read is that tooth decay is not
just about things sticking to your teeth and acid producing bacteria
rotting your teeth. Like everything it is about homeostasis and

balanced body chemistry.

This homeostasis can be affected by what you eat, how well

mineralised your teeth buds are during gestation and therefore the
state of your mothers diet during her pregnancy of you, and how
many pregnancies she had before you and whether she was
adequately nourished during lactation. summarizes Clare Fox,
Osteopath, who is using Ramiels book and Western A Price
principles.
So following on from the excellent JUNO article, Natural Tooth
Care, written in 2010 by Dr Hajikakou, I will re visit the topic
and expand on some of the issues. He is credited with the title
of this article by the way. Please read his article on line to
support this one, especially for more information on the

The NHS agrees that you should brush before and not for an hour
after meals, twice a day for at least 2 minutes
http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/dentalhealth/Pages/Teethcleaningguid

But if acids can attack teeth after 20 minutes then I guess it is a

balance if you have decay already. Perhaps finish with cheese to
alkaline, dont finish with desserts and fruit, and brush gently after
half an hour to avoid damaging the enamel is a composite of
brushing advise out there. Brushing on waking BEFORE breakfast
is a must and before bed, to reduce bacteria, and if you want to
brush after eating dont forget the waiting guidelines due to the
acid saliva.
The mechanical action of brushing is key, whatever brush you
choose, and flossing is advised by all. Disclosing tablets are a
great way so you and your children (over the age of 6) can see
where your brushing technique is poor. They would be used very
occasionally, due to the Vegetable dyes and Erythrocine used, and
must not be swallowed.

.too much sugar which in turn will leach calcium out of our
bones. Some dentists believe that it only takes a 25% imbalance
of your body's chemistry for tooth decay to begin. The biochemical
cause of tooth decay is related to nutrition. In fact the biochemistry
shows that tooth decay may be caused by a "disturbance in the
ratio of calcium to phosphorus" in your bloodstream.
The mechanism for tooth decay would not happen in a
healthy tooth with a healthy diet. The driver is mineral
deficiency, not forgetting that we need vitamins to utilize the
minerals. The shift is in nourishing teeth and gums rather
than killing the bacteria stresses Philip Ridley, founder of the
London Capter of Weston A Price. The bone renews itself

every 6 years, but because the enamel is not near a blood

source it renews itself through the saliva.
Nutritients in saliva, such as soluble vitamins (Vit D, A and
K2) magnesium and protein, bathe the tooth. (More about
saliva later see you didnt realize there was so much to it?)
Refined carbs and processed sugars need a huge store of
magnesium. If the saliva is not nutrient rich, then the enamel
cant renue and so decays and the bacteria will then gobble
up the dead enamel. All agree that sugars are not good for
health, especially for teeth, Unrefined sugars like molasses,
rapadura, raw honey, are natural mineral rich with the right
about of magnesium however.

I had heard about Phytic acid regarding depletion of nutrients

and soak my mueslie overnight, when I remember, including
nuts and seeds but hadn't thought of the effect of phytic acid
on teeth. Phytic acids are found in grains which contain
toxins which inhibits sprouting and digestion so if you do not
soak grains and then they will take minerals from the
digestive tract and inhibit shellate (which binds with the
minerals to aid absorption). (VitCcancountertheantinutrient

effectsthatphyticacidhaswhenitbindstoironandeatingbread
withcalciumrichfoodslikebutterandcheese,tahinioralmond
butter.)Allowing grains and seeds to sprout of course
increases the mineral content which allows more minerals in
the saliva.

Buckwheat (kasha), millet, amaranth and quinoa. Being seeds

rather than "true" grains, all of these are low in phytic acid as well
as having an alkalizing effect on the body. Tooth pulp is fatty
and is fed by the blood so good fats are key for teeth too. *
Replace processed vegetable oils with good fats, like grass
fed butter, raw milk, and coconut oil. Cold pressed flaxseed
and olive oil are great but shouldnt be heated.

If you eat meat then it should be wild, free range, or grass

fed animals. Vit A comes from the carotine from the
grass. And of course animals who have been in the sun will
be making Vit D just like we do. Grass fed meat and ideally
raw milk ensures a better balance of omega 3 and 6.

Don't forget that free range is sometimes as good as organic.

Organic has to be grass fed for 60% of the time for Soil

Association accreditation in the UK, which is a good starting

point, but check your local farm as they may feed their
animals grass more time of the year. Organ meats are
nutrient rich as are bone broths where bones are boiled for
20 hours to release the bone marrow. Grass fed meat have
a lower fat content naturally compared to lean meat which
will not in mineral balance.

During Weston A Prices 15,000 mile trip around the world he

observed that in cultures still eating traditional foods, as opposed to
processed and sugary foods, cavities were rare.

My infection was in a tooth that had been root canalled... and for
years I kept being told there was nothing there despite all the signs
it was infected. I was taking Vitamin C to bowel tolerance which
then first 11,000mg, but when I began the oil pulling, a gumboil
appeared alongside the tooth which then proved there was an
infection (one that three doses of horse strength anti biotics had not
touched, by the way). I decided to go for an extraction, managed
homeopathically, and the infection sac was attached to one of the
root - on the outside of it. Within a week, my bowel tolerance for

contact her if you believe that you are suffering from mercury
poisoning. (You'll see a significant overlap with candida
because mercury and candida are frequently found together.)
She strongly advises that any chelation, even natural which she
prefers, must be under guidance from a health professional. And
she stresses that before any dental work it is vital that you are fit
and well, focusing on your nutrition status and boosting your
immune system . Please contact her for support.

treaty provision on phasing out amalgam fillings

It is not true now that amalgam is cheaper than other alternatives,
as mercury and silver prices have increased, and it is not true that
dentistry is impossible without amalgam as Norway, Denmark, and
Sweden do not use mercury in dentistry.
I have not time to check this out but Many white fillings contain
bisGMA, a synthetic material that is created using bisphenol-A, or
BPA, a hormone-disrupting chemical linked to many health

the composite fillings on chewing surfaces degrade, more BPA is

released. Fluoride is also in some white fillings!

I do not recommend the use of any fluoride-containing products to my patients. I do not
believe that fluoride has any major effect in reducing tooth decay, in spite of all the
statistics presented by health authorities. Fluoride is a powerful toxin that should be
avoided. In the doses advocated for decay-prevention, it has a hypothyroid action
(suppresses the thyroid gland), penetrates all bones of the body and accumulates in the
pineal gland of the brain, causing it to calcify. Perhaps a better-informed choice would
lead to fewer parents using fluoride products. DrHajikakouisadentalsurgeon

Peter Crosta M.A writes High levels of fluoride exposure for

extended periods of time may result in harm. For example, dental
fluorosis - a discoloration of tooth enamel - may occur if a person

is exposed to too much fluoride. In addition, it is possible for a

lifetime of exposure to high fluoride levels to lead to bone
weakening and skeletal fluorosis (joint stiffness and pain). More
extreme, toxic effects and even death may result if someone
consumes too much fluoride.

So which toothpaste to use?
There is a theory (Dr. Gerard F. Judd, Ph.D) that this slimy
Glycerine film will prevent the enzymes in your saliva from
remineralising tooth enamel and unfortunately rinsing afterwards
does not work. I have used non fluoride toothpaste for years
but I have recently discovered that even the organic ones will
probably have gycerine.

I searched for glycerine free toothpaste and found Spry for

example, but people often make their own with different blends of
bicarb of soda, coconut oil, salt, hydrogen peroxide, and various
herbs, etc.. I may give this a try and will buy more licorish sticks.
Licorish sticks are fun to chew, as well as antibacterial, I buy mine
from the health shop.

If a root canal is recommended to you, you should definitely get a
second or third opinion to confirm the true need for the procedure.
Now, if the dentist has properly diagnosed the cause of your
problems and if you really have a true need for a root canal
(infection or deep cavity), then the damage is too great to reverse.
The healthiest alternative to a root canal is simply to take out the
infection by removing the tooth.
Local holistic dentist Deepi agrees that if a root canal is indicated
sometimes extraction is better than a root filling. She had heard of
meridian links with certain molars and breast cancer but evidence
is scant at the moment.

We won't all be near to a holistic dentist or be able to

afford one with fillings double with a private dentist
compared to 48 on the NHS (level 2). However,
with more knowledge we will be able to seek out a
local dentist (NHS or private) who we should be able
to work with. Go on recommendation and ask the
correct questions. It is wise to also check with all
dentists to make sure they use all of the mercury removal
protocols whether in your plan or not, as I think it will sort out
the better informed dentist.

And be aware that in addition to metals used in
fillings and bridges, dentists also use a wide
assortment of cements, anesthetics, bonding
materials, temporary appliances, denture materials
and more and every one of these substances can
potentially cause a negative reaction once placed in

the sensitive environment of the mouth. A holistic

dentist should be able to allergy test if you need.

So what happens if you have a cavity?

Great timing actually as my 6 year old has decay in as many teeth.
That is more than me and I am 46!

But she loves brushing her

teeth and her diet is pretty good, loves fresh fruit and veggies and
doesn't have a sweet tooth. HOW DID WE FEEL?

I clearly

have a lot to learn.

I wonder about my nutritional status when I was breastfeeding my
son and pregnant. Also, she prefers rice milk to even our raw milk,
snacks on fruit and hardly eats meat.
What to to? She gagged with the coconut oil pulling, poor girl and
I doubt she will ask for second helpings of my fermented cod liver
oil! I have just joined a Yahoo group called alternative teeth....
And there are some talking about ozone treatment or tooth packing
with salt and herbs for decay. I may try the tooth packing. I could
make some bone broths but she is not a fan of soups. more grass
fed beef in general I think. Strange that I was veggie for 15 years

and here I am advocating more meat for teeth.

My 8 year old son brushes less, drinks less water, eats less fresh
foods, and has something sugary every day now that he has schools
dinners! But has better teeth... Mmm More meat perhaps, raw
milk every day? This is anecdotal of course ... I am sure there are
vegans with fab teeth. What about fluoride? I haven't used for
decades and both my kids don't but is this the time to find a
compromise with a toxin?
So I was faced with filling the cavity or not? How long to leave
the decay? Well not ignore of course.. I will try alternatives. How
long before a possible infection and what about the pain? Luckily
I have a lovely Weleda mouthwash with herbs and homeopathic
remedies which she loves so that may help. New era tissue salts
are on the list. She does love organic yoghurt which is a start and
does love butter. Raw is expensive but I could buy just for her. I
will ask about ozone therapy. Hey there is the meridian chart and I
will check which organ that tooth relates too.
So I visited a holistic dentist in Epsom, some 30 minutes away, a
husband & wife team listed on various holistic and mercury free
and homeopathic sites. I shared my concerns and listened to what
Deepi had to say. Despite reading so much there was still much to
learn. All sugar may cause decay if the other conditions and
tendencies are present. And fruit should only be eaten with food.

This made me think of the school snack slot mid morning which
Katharine had been having for 2 years now. Deepi said that she
was trying to speak to the school re this practice as fruit is very
acidic on the teeth. Ideas such as cheese and celery, carrot and
seeds (no nuts unfortunately in school due to allergy) were better
snacks in regard of teeth. I remembered 40 years ago where milk
was given in schools and as fruit is now around 30p compared to
half a pint of organic milk. Shame the children cant have a choice
as perhaps that would be better for teeth.
After school I bring snacks as my daughter is always hungry and
again I must focus on less fruit, and instead bring nuts and quality
crisps, or fruits with the lowest sugar content (she may not go for
rhubarb or lemons) but will enjoy strawberries, blueberries,
papaya, peaches and nectarines with little cheese sandwiches. Our
family is sugar aware but I am also socially aware that I want the
children to feel included and understand that there is a place for
moderation so I let them enjoy the Friday cake sale and enjoy
friends parties. But I will supervise brushing more I think.
Interesting that my son has never eaten fruit at snack time or is
hungry after school. The other thing that is different is that he
doesnt suck his thumb! After chatting to Deepi today I wondered
whether thumb sucking meant that the mouth does not have a good
circulation of oxygen, which is a known bacteria zapper.

Yes she said, and also the mouth becomes dry when sucking a
thumb, and dryness will mean that the saliva is more acidic and can
lead to more tooth decay.
Graeme Munro-Hall finds that early stages of decay is a
warning to you that nutrition and oral hygiene needs to be
stepped up and sometimes early decay can be reversed.
People have turned around some serious decay and infection
naturally, saving their teeth and Nagels book showsxraysof
teethwherethedentinhasresealedthecavityarea.However, with
his Thermography and ultrasound machines (the only in the
country) Munroe-Hall can see that even if the outer layer
seems healed, decay still continues beneath., The opinion and
evidence seems divided on whether decay can be just halted or
if decayed tooth can re mineralize. I feel that it is worth always
being pro ctive and keeping up to date with possible teeth
healing interventions and diets at home, as it most definitely
slows decay and may mean that need for fillings are reduced.
I applaud mothers who have gone the extra mile to save their
childrens teeth. I will start to have check ups more regularly I
think and buy some disclosing tablets I am sure my brushing
has become lazy! I am definitely going to improve my
nutrition and change toothpastes prevention and education
is the key.

Iwouldtakealookatthemeridancharttocheckthetoothorgan
connectiontoo.http://www.resourcesforlife.net/meridian
interactivetoothchart.asp
Oxone therapy for decay is being discussed too. And yesterday my
daughter had ozone water treatment. The machine is 10,000 so
not for home use but if your holistic dentist has one ask!
This is a very informative page suggesting that this treatment can
be effective pre fillings but not long lasting for root canals
http://naturaldentistry.us/1672/ozone-therapy-as-treatment-indentistry/ and long term side effects are still being researched. And
I being simplistic if I say that being outside, singing or exercising,
may also be of benefit to teeth? After all the suns ultra violet rays
and the oxygen is great for other areas or health.

So if you are on any medication at all please drink more water and

I have found that what is good for health and nutrition overall is
also great for teeth. I have had a huge journey looking into
Holistic Dentistry and as a result I will be looking again at how I
can better support my familys oral health. I hope that it has raised
a few more questions for you and made you feel a little more
knowledgeable about our great gnashers.

EXTRAS

Mercury is the 2nd most toxic substance in the world.

At least 17 studies have shown that mercury fillings

constantly leak mercury vapour.

80% of the mercury vapour that we inhale from mercury

fillings enters our bloodstream.

Mercury is transferred from a mother to her foetus during

pregnancy and is transferred post-natally through breastmilk.

Many studies have established that mercury vapour from

fillings can lead to health problems.

Mercury promotes the formation of antibiotic resistant

bacteria.

Mercury harms the health of dentists and dental personnel.

The UK Dept of Health advises Dentists not to place or

replace amalgam fillings in pregnant women.

The National Academy of Sciences estimated that 60,000

newborns a year are at risk of learning disabilities because of
the mercury in mothers. In September 2006, the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) admitted that they were unable
to prove the safety of mercury fillings.

Mercury fillings are banned in Japan, Norway, and Sweden.

They are not allowed in women and children in Austria and
Germany. They will be banned in California. There has been
proposed legislation in the U.S. Congress to have them
banned or highly restricted in the U.S.
