Introduction

Introduction
avons atteint notre objectif.

This document contains the results of the seventh Canadian Open

Mathematics Challenge. The Open is a collaborative activity of the
Canadian Mathematical Society and the Centre for Education in
Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo. Many
people consider competitions as serving the primary goal of identifying bright students. Both of these sponsoring bodies, while accepting
this view, believe that the more significant reason for holding competitions is to challenge students with an interesting set of mathematics
problems which will stimulate an interest in mathematics. It is our
intent that teachers will use these problems in their classroom and get
the same sense of joy at having their students solve these problems that
we had in creating them. At the same time if the problems are not used
directly in the classroom we hope that they will be used in discussion
and in trying to extend mathematical knowledge and know how. It
gives us great pleasure when we hear that students have enjoyed
working on the problems and have been successful in solving some of
them. We do not expect students to be able to solve all the problems
but rather our expectation is that students will actually work at the
problems and have fun at doing them. They should also check the
CEMC Website to see complete solutions when they are finished their
work.
This paper was specifically designed to encourage participation
for students from all grades. We were most gratified to see that a large
number of younger students in Grades 9 and 10 wrote the paper.
Questions A1 through A5 were specifically put together for students
in these grades. In the rest of part A, the mirror question (A6) got a
very positive response in the sense that students attempted the question but generally this question was found to be very difficult. A7
involved number properties and pattern recognition depending upon
how it was done. Students handled this question amazingly well. A8
was a question that not a lot of students attempted successfully. In
retrospect, we thought it was quite doable but students did not seem to
make the connection between the number of divisors and the probability statement. This question was difficult because it combined a
number of concepts with which students were not familiar. In part B,
the first question was structured to be accessible to a majority of
students. We wanted students to write out a systematic solution to
each of the four parts of this question. We were hoping to see students
progress in an orderly and systematic fashion. Judging from the
solutions and the marks we think we achieved our goal. Question 2 in
part B was not done very well because students did not have a good
idea of proof and properties of divisibility. In part (a) of this question,
students needed to know properties of divisibility involving 4 and 9.
In this question, it would have been acceptable to proceed at least
partially by trial and error. In part (b), this question was difficult
especially the second part. It is important to realize that it cannot be
done by showing it true for a number of examples. Question 3(a) was
accessible to most students. This question was answered very well. In
3(b) there was a variety of nice solutions to this question. Generally
speaking, it was good to see such well written solutions to this
problem. The final question in part B was quite difficult and could be
done in a variety of ways. There were a number of students who
handled this question very successfully and those who did this
question did it in a variety of ingenious ways. It turns out that this
question is really not that hard. It is a fun question that requires nothing
more than elementary circle theorems. It would be a useful exercise
to work this question out after the contest is over and see if it could be
done were a little more time available.

Introduction

Introduction

The number of registered competitors was 5238 with 4452

official candidates. We had 991 students who achieved a score of
50 or higher. This was a very good result for a competition of this
type. The committee responsible for constructing this contest
would like to thank those teachers who assist their students in
contest preparation and who give willingly of their time and energy
in school and classroom activities. Your efforts are very much
appreciated.

Introduction

Introduction
Outstanding performance in the Canadian Open Mathematics
Challenge (COMC) is recognized in three ways. First, at the
discretion of the COMC Committee, Provincial Champions
are named, each of whom receives a plaque, and the school of
each Provincial Champion also receives a plaque. Second, at
the Committee's discretion, a number of high-ranking students
in each jurisdiction are awarded Gold Medals. Third,
approximately the top fifty students in the COMC will be
invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO)
which will be held on March 26, 2003. Subscriptions to the
Canadian Mathematical Society's internationally recognized
problem solving journal "CRUX with MAYHEM" are awarded
to the schools of those students invited to write the 2003 CMO.

Since outstanding performance in the CMO is one of the major

factors in the selection of Canada's team to the annual
International Mathematical Olympiad, the COMC provides
the important first round in this selection process. Now in its
seventh year, the COMC simultaneously provides a broadly
accessible fall term activity that is a genuine stimulus to the
mathematics programs in Canadian schools.

For students in grades 8 to 10 who wrote the 2002 COMC, the

results are considered for invitations to 2003 Esso/CMS
National Math Camp. The National Camp is designed primarily
for younger Canadian students with at least two years remaining
in high school and with the potential to compete at the
mathematical olympiad level. Participation in the National
Camp is by invitation only.

invitation seulement.

The Canadian Mathematical Society is privileged to cooperate

with the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing
and is indebted to the Centre and its staff for their invaluable
support for the COMC. The Society and the COMC Committee
wish to thank their colleagues, including many high school
teachers, whose assistance is crucial to the success of this
important national competition.

Comments on the Paper

Partie A
1. Trs bien.
Moyenne : 4,6

Moyenne : 0,3

Comments on the Paper

Part A
1. Very well done.
Average: 4.6
2. There were many different ways to approach this problem. The vast majority of students got the correct answer here.
Average: 4.3
3. Some students had trouble either remembering or determining the interior angles of a regular pentagon. Once students came
up with an angle, most were able to finish this off.
Average: 3.7
4. This problem was a fair bit harder. Again, there were several different ways to tackle this question. Some students did not
recognize that the expression given was for the sum of the first n terms, and instead used this to generate the terms.
Average: 3.1
5. This problem was exceptionally well done for this place on the paper.
Average: 4.6
6. Problem A6 was a nice "application" problem. It required some physical intuition as well as mathematical skills, and so was
reasonably hard.
Average: 2.3
7. Students did quite well on this difficult problem. There appeared to be a fair amount of familiarity with this type of question.
Well done!
Average: 3.1
8. Many students were able to state that M has 10 divisors, but most were not able to proceed beyond this point. The main piece
of knowledge required here was how to calculate the number of divisors of a positive integer.
Average: 0.5

Part B
1. Most students who had some knowledge of analytic geometry were able to get through this problem. The problem was designed
to lead students through a number of calculations and to test their knowledge of a number of properties of lines. Part (d) was
designed to require some insight after the calculations in the previous parts.
Average: 7.1
2. Problem B2 this year was designed to be harder than B3, and turned out to be quite a bit harder. In part (a), some students
recognized that the digit B had to be even, but not many made it beyond this point. In part(b)(i), quite a few students were able
to reason their way through to the correct conclusion, but then had more trouble in part (b)(ii). Many other students started out
assuming what they wanted to prove, which got them quickly into trouble.
Average: 2.1
3. This year, Alphonse and Beryl found a friend! As always, the game question remains quite popular and was attempted by almost
everyone. Most were able to get part (a) correctly. Part (b) was quite challenging to get completely through while remembering
to deal with all of the cases. An neat approach to this problem was to combine Beryl and Colleen into one player (Berleen?)
who could choose 2, 3 or 4 marbles on her turn, with Alphonse still only being able to choose 1 or 2 marbles.
Average: 3.2
4. The final problem of the 2002 COMC was quite a challenge. It was quite rewarding to see a variety of different solutions appear
among the top candidates. This problem has the additional feature that after several hours of work on it, you can find a halfpage solution!
