A tanker used to transport oil could be filled up by two pipes in 4 hours. The
small pipe alone would take x hours to the fill up the tanker. If a larger pipe alone
is used, it would take 6 hours less than the smaller pipe to fill up the tanker.
(a) Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the fraction of tanker filled up
by the small pipe alone in 1 hour.
(b) Write down an equation in x and reduce it to a quadratic equation.

Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant


figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in degrees,
unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.

(c) Solve the equation and find the time in which the tanker would be filled by
each pipe operating individually.

The use of an electronic calculator is expected, where appropriate.

are priced at $1.50 and the rest at $1.

Express the takings as a fraction of the maximum possible takings, giving
your answer in lowest terms.

(d) It was decided that for future screening, the price of the $1.50 seats would be
increased by 20%. Assuming that the cinema is filled with adults, calculate,
the percentage increase in the maximum possible takings.

The figure shows a triangular prism of height 15 cm. Given that QR = 15 cm,
PQ = x cm and TS = d cm,
(a) Find the total surface area, A cm2, of the prism in terms of x and d.
(b) If A = 360, express d in terms of x.
(c) Hence, form an equation in x and show that it reduces to x2 12x 48 = 0.

half price. The cinema was full and the taking was $311. Calculate the

10. Water is flowing from 2 different hoses, hose A and hose B, into the tank. It
takes x hours to fill up the tank using hose A only, while it takes (2x + 3) hours to
fill the same tank with hose B only. However if you use both hoses to fill up the
tank simultaneously it will take 4 hours to fill up the tank.
(a) Write down an expression, in terms of x, the fraction of the tank that can be
filled in one hour using hose A.
(b) Write down an expression, in terms of x, the fraction of the tank that can be
filled in one hour using hose B.
(c) Form an equation involving x and show that it reduces to 2x2 9x 12 = 0.
(d) Solve the equation and find out the time taken to fill up the tank using hose
B only. Give your answer to the nearest minutes.

(a) Write down an expression, in terms of p, for the amount of Singapore dollars

At the end of June 2006, Mrs Sim again changed US$1000 into Singapore
dollars. The rate of exchange was US$(p + 0.2) = S$1.
(b) Write down an expression, in terms of p, for the amount of Singapore dollars
she received at the end of June 2006.

13. The diagram shows a metal plate ABCDEF of negligible thickness. Two
quadrants of circles of radius r cm and a circle of radius r cm and a circle of
radius 2r at the centre have been cut out. The length of BC is 15 cm and the
length of CD is 18 cm.
(a) Given that the metal plate ABCDEF has an area of 240 cm2, form an
equation and show that it reduces to 33r 2 35r 70 = 0.
(b) Solve this equation, giving both answers correct to 2 decimal places.
(c) Hence, find the perimeter of the metal plate.

(c) Given that Mrs Sim received S$416 less at the end of June than she received
at the beginning January, form an equation in p and show that it reduces to
260 p2 + 52p 125 = 0.
(d) Solve this equation to find the exchange rate at the end of June 2006.

12. The length of rectangle A is x cm. the base of triangle B is (x + 5) cm.


(a) Given that the width of the rectangle is 3 cm less than its length, write down
an expression for the area of rectangle A in terms of x.
(b) Given that the height of triangle B is 2 cm greater than the length of
rectangle A, write down an expression for the area of triangle B in term of x.
(c) Given that the both rectangle A and triangle B have the same area, form an
equation in x and show that it can be simplified to x2 13x 10 = 0.
(d) Solve the equation x2 13x 10 = 0, giving your answers to two decimal
places.
(e) Hence find the length of the diagonal of rectangle A.

14. A tank will be filled with water by a large pipe in x hours.
(a) Express in terms of x, the fraction of the tank occupied by water if the large
pipe is turned on for one hour.
A smaller pipe alone takes six hours more than the large pipe to fill the tank.
(b) Express in terms of x, the fraction of the tank occupied by water if the
smaller pipe alone is turned on for one hour.
(c) Given that the tank can be filled by both pipes together in 4.5 hours, form an
equation in x and show that it can be simplified to x2 3x 27 = 0.

16. In the diagram, the circle with centre at B has a radius (2r + 1) cm. The
semicircle with centre at A and the semicircle with centre at C are identical and
each has a radius (12 6r) cm. O is the centre of the largest semicircles.
(a) Write down an expression, in terms of r, for
(i) BC
(ii) BO
(b) By using Pythagoras Theorem, form an equation in r and show that it
reduces to 18r2 57r + 42 = 0.

(d) Solve the equation, giving the solutions correct to two decimal places.

(c) Solve the equation to find the possible value of r.

(e) Calculate the percentage of the tank that will be filled if the large pipe alone
is turned on for 3 hours, giving your answer correct to one decimal place.

15. Chris cycles from A to C in a certain part of a country. He travels for 50 km, at a
constant speed of x km/h, until he reaches the point B, where his bicycle chain
breaks.
(i) Write down the time, in hours, taken for his cycled journey from A to B.
(ii) He then walks the remaining 6 km from B to C at a constant speed of
(x 16) km/h. Write down the time, in hours, taken for him to walk from B
to C.
(iii) Given that the total time for the whole journey from A to C is 4 hours, write
down an equation in x and show that it reduces to x2 30x + 200 = 0.

(iv) Solve the equation x 30x + 200 = 0. Explain why you would reject one of
the two solutions.
(v) Find the time, in hours and minutes, Chris would have taken if he had
completed the whole journey by bicycle at the original constant speed.

17. A toy bicycle has two wheels whose radii are x cm and (x 12) cm. The toy can
move 30m in 5 minutes.
(a) Write down and simplify the number of revolutions made by the two wheels
per minute in terms of x and .
(b) If the small wheel makes 14 revolutions more than the big one in one
minute, form an equation in x and show that it reduces to
11x2 132x 900 = 0.

For the first 40 km, his average speed is x km/h, but for the last 35 km, his

remaining 6 km at a constant speed of (x + 1) km/h. Ben walked at a constant
speed of x km/h all the way.
(a) Write down the time, in hours and without simplifying, Ali took to complete
the 7 km walk.
(b) Given that Ali finished the journey 45 minutes earlier than Ben, form an
equation in x and show that it reduces to x2 + x 8 = 0.
(c) Solve the equation x2 + x 8 = 0, to find the starting speed, correct to your
answer to 2 decimal places.
(d) Hence find the time, in hours and minutes, Ali took to complete the walk and
also find his average speed for the whole journey.
