INTRODUCTION
Rickshaw is the most important transport of Bangladesh. Almost
every road of city and urban area we found rickshaw. It is a very
common means of transportation for going nearly or for a long
way. It is so much popular that sometimes people treat rickshaw
as most comfortable transport among city and village.

Rickshaw puller are the very familiar person of Bangladeshi

people. The driver of a rickshaw is called a rickshaw puller. He is
the most hardworking people of Bangladesh. He can be black, thin,
strong, week, younger or senior.There is no verification of their
age. His life is full of sorrow and pain but instead of all a
rickshaw puller drop a passenger by smiling face wishing that he
will get a good fare from passengers. But sometimes they don’t
get this.Even they do not get there perfect wages. If they get
there perfect wages they will live a happy life with their family.

Name – Hamidur Rahaman

Age - 28

Marital status – Married

Address – Camp Market

Mohammadpur,
Dhaka-1207.

He has been living here from last 12 years; since he got married
this is now his permanent address, a part of his identity.

Other profession(s)
 At present he works as only a rickshaw puller. However, he
worked as a child labor in construction sights for nearly 5 years.
He acted as one of the earners in his family from a tender age.

Family Members

He lives in joint family of 23 members. However, he is one

of the main income sources for his family. His aim is to look after
the other family members other than his nuclear family. The
other income sources of his joint family as his three brothers. He
is the eldest among the four.

Children

Hamidur Rahman has three children. They include tow

daughters and one son. His son is the youngest among them all.
His oldest daughter is 8 years old and his son who is the youngest
is only 4 years old.

Education
 Hamidur Rahman received a little education. He went to a
primary school till class three but then his education was stopped
due to financial crisis. However, all his children receive education.
He sent all his children to school so that they have better future.
He had always regretted the fact that he had to stay
uneducated.

Daily Income

His daily income is about 400-450 taka per day. Therefore

his income per month is about 12000-15000 taka. He earns a little
less on holidays. He earns the most on festive days like Eid and
Pahela Boishakh.

Food Habits

Hamidur Rahman has a stable food habit. He can afford fish

and meat every second day. His favorite food is Hilsha Fish with
“khichuri”. He is able to afford rich food like “biriyani” every
txice a month.

Current and fixed assets

 He owns a plot of thousand square feet in his village and a
part of his country-house. Other than that he does not have any
fixed asset. His assets include a colored television with cable line
and a fan. As a rickshaw puller he does not earn enough to own
any other assets.

Own home or rent home?

He has been living in a rent home with his family from last
12 years. Before that he lived in his country-house. He has to pay
a high amount of money as rent which is not easy to afford.

Tradition

Hamidur Rahman does not follow any particular tradition. He

was born in Noakhali and speaks in his country’s accent. He
informed that he follows certain tradition(s) that all other people
of his religion follows.
 Lifestyle

He is a satisfied family man. He earns enough to satisfy his

family and his own needs. Other than that he is living happily with
his beloved wife and children.

Own Rickshaw or rent?

He owns his own rickshaw. As a result, he does not have to

pay any amount to the owner and can spend enough to satisfy his
family’s needs.

Any bad habits?

As a human being every people have bad habits. Hamidur has

only one bad habit of smoking. Other than that he has no bad
habits at all. He is very honest in his life.
 Religion

He follows the path of Islam. He tries to be a perfect

Muslim. He does not miss any prayers on holidays and in his free
time. He also tries to fast in holidays during the month of
Ramadan. He cannot fast in week days due to physical stress.

Reasons for Rickshaw pulling

1. He took this job mainly for his illiteracy.

2. He had to accept this profession because he was not left
with a choice. He had to earn for his whole family.
3. As we know Bangladesh is a poor country. And most if the
people of our country are illiterate. For the lack of
education and poor economic background many people choose
this profession.
4. He has no alternative way for earring money.
5. He has no fixed asset without his village land.

Dress

Hamidur’s usual dress is a lungi and shirt. He owns three

shirts and two lungis. He prefers wearing the only Punjabi he owns
on festive days.
 Government Opportunities

Till date he did not get any government opportunities. The

government never took a step forward to help people like him.

Position in Society

He has the same status as all other rickshaw pullers have in this
society. He belongs to the higher poor class group. The society
does not recognize their work for society.

Entertainment

Rickshaw pullers do not have much entertainment in their lives.

He sometimes goes to the cinema with his family for
entertainment. He also goes to the park with his family during the
holidays.
 Conclusion

From Hamidur Rahman’s lifestyle, we can portray the life of a

typical rickshaw puller. Rickshaw pullers in our country live a very
simple life. They are deprived of most of the facilities that a
normal person should get.
