Question 6

Besides feasting and entertaining, some Lunar New Year customs are still practised today.
One of these is house cleaning. The entire house should be cleaned before New Year's Day. On the
day itself, all cleaning equipment, especially the broom, are put away. Sweeping and dusting are not
allowed for fear that good fortune will be swept away. After New Year's Day, the floors may be
swept but the dust and rubbish are swept to the middle of the hall and then placed in corners. It is
not taken out until the fifth day.
Lighting firecrackers on New Year's Day is the Chinese way of sending out the old year and
welcoming the new. At the stroke of midnight on the eve, every door in the house and even the
windows has to be opened to let the old year go out.
All debts have to be paid by this time. Nothing should be lent on this day as anyone who
does so will be lending throughout the year. Everyone should refrain from using foul language and
bad or unlucky words on this day. Negative terms and the word 'four' which sounds like death are
not to be uttered. Death and dying are never mentioned and ghost stories are totally taboo. The first
person one meets and the first words one hears are significant as they hint at what fortunes will be
for the entire year.
On New Year's Day, one is not supposed to wash one's hair for fear that it would mean
washing away the good luck of the New Year. Red clothing is preferred as the colour is considered
bright and happy. If you cry on this day, you will cry throughout the year. Therefore, children's
pranks and misbehaviour are tolerated and they are not spanked for fear of making them cry.

Mr Nobody Author Unknown

I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done
In everybody's house!
There's no one ever see his face,
And yet we all agree
That every plate we break was cracked
By Mr. Nobody.
'Tis he who always tears our books,
Who leaves the door ajar,
He pulls the buttons from our shirts,
And scatters pins afar;
That squeaking door will always squeak,
For. prithee, don't you see,
We leave the oiling to be done
By Mr. Nobody.
He puts damp wood upon the fire,
That kettle cannot boil;
His are the feet that bring in mud,
And all the carpets soil.
The papers always mislaid,
Who had them last but he?
There's no one tosses them about
But Mr. Nobody.
The finger marks upon the door
By none of us are made;
We never leave the blinds unclosed,
To let the curtains fade;
The ink we never spill; the boots
That lying around you see
Are not our boots - they all belong
To Mr. Nobody.
