Two Filhos de Francisco

2005 Brazilian drama film about the lives of the musicians Zez Di Camargo & Luciano,
directed by Breno Silveira.
This movie was one of the path-breaker where a father dreams his two sons to be successful
in music field. Francisco and his Helena have 7 children. He tries to create opportunity to
showcase their ability in music and takes them to places where they get a chance like radio
station, village fair, clubs, etc. Despite of their poverty he believes in their potential and tries
constantly to promote them in different stages of their life. As they are unable to pay their
rent they move to city and an agent helps them to establish their career in music with help of
outdoor trips. But he cheats them. Both Camargo and Camarguinho return to their parents.
But sometime later he realizes his mistake and convince them to establish their once again.
But unfortunately car meets with an accident and Camarguinho dies. Slowly Camargo
reaches better and obtain heights. But after his marriage he undertakes struggling period. His
younger brother also joins him and they sign contract with company. Album becomes huge
success.
The movie also explored has two sides i.e. their life in village and their life in city. In the
village we could see that how Francisco fights with Mayor to get books and place for school.
We experience that there was no hospitals. There were no music teachers who would teach
others. There was military rule and verses that were coined on military people were
considered offensive. According my observation their dressing in the normal day to day life
was in dull colors but when it came to special occasions they wore bright colors. When they
moved to city, there also we observe military rule. Polio disease was there at that time. One of
his kids was affected by polio. Francisco was working as laborer at construction sites to earn
bread and butter. But when kids start earning their financial position becomes stable. I liked
the movie because father had always believed in his dream and had understood his two sons
potential to flair in music field. And he directly or indirectly tries encouraging them with
different means.

Memrias Pstumas
It is known in English as Posthumous Memoirs is a 2001 comedy-drama film based on The
Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas by Machado de Assis.
This movie is about dead man narrates his lifetime journey. Who are all involved? Bras
Cubas belongs to rich family. He completes his education at Europe. His life was catastrophe
and unheroic moments and political ambition which he didnt like. Throughout his life he
comes across different women, but his relationship with them were fruitless. Despite he has
extra marital relationship with Virgilia. She becomes pregnant but doesnt marry her and she
also chose to stay with her husband. Cubas considers his life in his deathbed in the manner of
an accounting, finding neither any positives nor negatives; but he then realizes that since he
has not fathered any children he has not passed on the "misery" of life any further. For this
reason he considers his life a success.
In this movie we notice more the life style of the elite class. Their ambition was to join
politics and gain position. Becoming a Congress person was considered prestigious. Marrying
Congress men daughter is indirect political invitation to gain position.

O Auto da Compadecida
This movie is based on the homonymous play by the Brazilian novelist and playwright
Ariano Suassuna. Jack the Cricket (Matheus Nachtergaele) and Chico (Selton Mello) & Dog
that is somehow a main character.
Both Jack and Chico are poor they work in a bakery. But the owner feeds them terrible food
and when they give it to the dog. Poor animal dies and leading the boys to fast-talk a priest
into giving the dog a funeral mass. Jack is enormously witty who is capable of handling
difficult situation with help of wisdom. He tries to settle his friends life who falls in love
with Rosina. Jack plots game to show Chico as heroic in front of Rosina, but unfortunately it
turns into tragedy. As the criminal bandits attack the town and they kill Bishop, Priest, Bakery
owner and Jack. Interestingly their life after death is also shown. Jack and other four people
in a court-room contest between Satan and a black Jesus, with the Virgin Mary. Jack
convinces Virgin Mary to provide four heaven slots to rest others and wins her heart. By the
time Chico is digging the sand Jack he gains his life back. They together donate the money
which they steal from bandits to church. Landlord gives a huge amount to Chico as loan. But
he fails then his skin would be stripped off. But Chico marries Rosina. Because of Jacks wit
Chico is saved from stripping his skin. They happily chose to stay a poor life than a rich one.
I liked Jacks character that is highly clever. Church had inseparable position. Bishop and
Priest would collect money performing rituals. And they were afraid of people who had
political power. People gave more importance to pets rather than person working for them
like the bakery owners. Criminal bandits got easily cheated by Jacks wit i.e. playing music
would regain life which blessed priest. Poverty is seen throughout but still that makes them
happy. Poor folks are ignored.

Capitates da area
Captains of the Sands Portuguese: Capites da Areia is a Brazilian Modernist novel written
by Jorge Amado in 1937. The movie is based on the 1937 Brazilian novel of the same name
by Jorge Amado & it has socialist Idealism.
This movie starts with orphan and abandoned kids who stay on street and lead by their life by
begging, gambling and stealing in Brazil. Pedro Bala and Professor are the main characters.
They worship mermaid. They execute a robbery plan and money earned helps to get their
bread and butter. They had rivalry with other gang. Professor helps Dora and her brother,
provides them place to stay. Slowly Dora falls in love with Pedro Bala. Bala takes his revenge
with other gang. And police arrest him and tortures him jail; while Dora is under Sisters
custody. Bala gets out of jail and rescues Dora who is ill, he tries all his means to save her but
she dies. After Doras death how Balas life transform and others change their path to lead
their life.
In this movie, one can observe prostitution was part of that society. And the life of prostitutes
and business is taken care of is shown. Orphan and abandoned kids have a raw, honest and
innocent life. And priests in that society was considered were important people.

Gonzaga De Pal Pra Filho

This movie makes us aware about father and sons problematic relationship in their life.
Father is Luiz Gonzaga who is King of Balao, who famous for his folk music. When he was
young he leaves his home to change his destiny and joins army but promises his father that
will not kill any folks. He gets punished for losing his shoe. He leaves army and wants to start
his career in music. Slowly he gains recognition but he professionally untrained which he
always felt depressed about it. He falls in love with a girl and she gives birth to Gonzaguinho.
But later she is suffered from tuberculosis and dies because it. Luiz Gonzaga gives his child
responsibility to his friend. Slowly he gains fame and enters into folk music success ladder.
Becomes inseparable part of peoples heart because of folk music tradition. But he always
had problematic relationship with his son. It is not because he doesnt love his son but it is
because of stressful journey in his music career to promote himself. Thus he is unable to
express his feelings towards his son. Gonzaga realizes what his son craves and gives him at
the end.
I liked this movie because it is a beautiful melodrama between father and son. The way father
narrates his journeys, the ups and downs in his struggling life was phenomenal. And his
relationship with Helena disturbs Gonzaguinho. Both Helena and Gonzaguinho have troubled
relationship as well. At the end events change Luiz Gonzagas mind and accepts his sons
offer.
