"The Music Man" Set to Open This Weekend

Rachel Herman and Jennica Hennen

Last Friday, we sat down with Mrs. Diana Caldwell, the director of our 2010 production of “The Music Man”. We asked her some thought provoking
questions about the musical, how it’s coming, and how we got the Victoria.

Why did you choose “The Music Man”? Well I felt like it was a family friendly show, we always pray about the show that we pick. We felt like it
would draw a lot of people to the show. And because we’ve added an evangelical message “The Music Man” is a great story of love and redemp-
tion and goes along with an evangelical invitation at the end. It’s a good show for that.

How many people are involved?: Approximately 200. 165 in the cast, grades 3-12 and we have a 30 piece orchestra, tech crew and marching band
we have about 200. Dr, Stiffler is using the middle school band and some high school kids to be in the finale to be in the boys marching band..

The Victoria Theatre is a large professional venue, and no other high school has ever performed there before. How did you manage to book it? Well, last
summer around June, we started thinking about where we could do the show, I started searching around for options. I talked to Bellbrook, West
Carrolton, and the Baum Opera House. We had an arrangement with the Baum Opera House, but due to the size, we decided not to do that. The
Victoria came to mind, we set up an appointment and Mrs. Berlean and I went down and the sales lady said that there was a two year waiting list.
She put in and said that she’d let us know two years from now. We left feeling kind of a little bit bummed about it. And then all the other venues
fell through so I talked to Mrs. Berlean about it and she said she was praying, and I said I was praying. And it was Friday morning and I got up and
I went ahead and email the sales lady and thought “well, we’ll just get on the list.” And sat down and sat all the books out and I prayed and said
“God, show me where you want us to go” and this is gonna be the honest truth, and I said “please open up a venue” and Mrs. Berlean was praying
too and then my phone went off. And then I went and picked up my phone and it was an e-mail from the sales lady from the Victoria and she said
“you’re not going to believe this but the Dayton Ballet has canceled their last week.” So I was like “Thank you God.” It was definitely a God thing.

How do you think rehearsals are coming along so far? We’ve been blessed with wonderful choreographers, Issac Pittman and Jinny and John
Hollins. And they’ve been very helpful in choreographing the music numbers. We are on schedule; it was a little hectic with the snow days, but
the month of April we will be running the show over and over. The Victoria theatre is advertising this to their regular patrons, we are hoping that
the audience will be made up of people who have never been to a Dayton Christian show before. We are in the Victoria Theatre website, www.
ticketcenterstage.com, we’re in with all of the other shows. So a lot of people who go to the shows will see (us). We are just very humbled by this
opportunity. We want this to be a good experience for the students.

Do we have any future plans to stay at the Victoria? If we get to go back, if God opens up the Victoria back up for us than that’s great, but it may
not work out again. We want everyone to have that experience. I just think it’s a great PR thing for our school.

Stevens had to say the mood began to change as
he started getting to his main point of which he
was trying to get across. Every day we go through
our lives at a fast-pace, from the moment we get up
to the time we fall asleep. We have every moment
scheduled and ready for what is to come. Taking
up any spare time we have with our daily planned
events. But this is what Stevens was trying to get
across, that we need to take that time to really just
sit and listen to what God has to say which is where
his challenge comes in.

For the next fourteen days pastor Mark Stevens chal-

lenged us as a student body to go for fourteen days,
waking up thirty minutes earlier than usual and just
giving the time to God, not speaking or doing other
things, just sitting and focusing on what God has to
say. When asked how sophomore, Stephanie Hsu
