April 2010 National Employment Report

NonIarm private employment increased 32.000 Irom March to April 2010 on a seasonally
adiusted basis. according to the ADP National Emplovment Report. The estimated change in
employment Irom February to March 2010 was revised up. Irom a decline oI 23.000 to an
increase oI 19.000.

In addition. the revised estimate oI the monthly change in employment Irom January to February
2010 shows a modest increase oI 3.000. Thus. employment has increased Ior three straight
months. albeit only modestly. The slow pace oI improvement Irom February through April is
consistent with the pause in the decline oI initial unemployment claims that occurred during the
winter months.

Unlike the estimate oI total establishment employment to be released on Friday by the Bureau oI
Labor Statistics (BLS). today`s ADP Report does not include any Iederal hiring in April Ior the
2010 Census. For this reason it is reasonable to expect that Friday`s Iigure Ior nonIarm total
employment reported by the BLS will be stronger than today`s estimate Ior nonIarm private
employment in the ADP Report.

April`s ADP Report estimates nonIarm private employment in the service-providing sector rose
by 50.000. the third consecutive monthly increase. Employment in the goods-producing sector
declined 18.000 during April. However. while construction employment dropped 49.000.
manuIacturing employment. in an encouraging sign. rose 29.000. the third consecutive monthly
increase.

Large businesses. deIined as those with 500 or more workers. saw employment increase by
14.000 and employment among medium-size businesses. deIined as those with between 50 and
499 workers increased by 17.000. Employment among small-size businesses. deIined as those
with Iewer than 50 workers. increased by 1.000 in April.*

In April. construction employment dropped 49.000. This was moderately higher than last
month`s decline oI 38.000. This was the thirty-ninth consecutive monthly decline. and brings the
total decline in construction iobs since the peak in January 2007 to 2.159.000. Employment in
the Iinancial services sector dropped 14.000. resulting in over three years oI consecutive monthly
declines.

For inIormation on the construction sector and use oI the ADP Report. please visit the
methodology section oI the ADP National Emplovment Report website at

*All data included in the ADP National Emplovment Report is based on size of pavroll. In some cases. small and medium-size pavrolls belong to
businesses emploving more workers than indicated bv the size grouping.

About the ADP Aational Emplovment Report
®

The ADP National Emplovment Report. sponsored by ADP
®
. was developed and is maintained
by Macroeconomic Advisers. LLC. It is a measure oI employment derived Irom an anonymous
subset oI roughly 500.000 U.S. business clients. During the twelve month period through
December 2009. this subset averaged over 360.000 U.S. business clients and over 22 million
U.S. employees working in all private industrial sectors. The ADP Small Business Report
®
is a
monthly estimate oI private nonIarm employment among companies in the United States with 1-
49 employees and is a subset oI the ADP National Emplovment Report. The data Ior both reports
is collected Ior pay periods that can be interpolated to include the week oI the 12th oI each
month. and processed with statistical methodologies similar to those used by the U.S. Bureau oI
Labor Statistics to compute employment Irom its monthly survey oI establishments. Due to this
processing. this subset is modiIied to make it indicative oI national employment levels; thereIore.
the resulting employment changes computed Ior the ADP National Emplovment Report are not
representative oI changes in ADP`s total base oI U.S. business clients.
