Through analyzing relationships in Sons and Lovers, the author argues that perfect love requires freedom and communication between partners, an fulfilling sex life, and attention to material needs. The marriages of Paul Morel's parents and his relationships with Miriam and Clara fail due to lack of these elements. Only when partners can freely communicate, enjoy intimacy, and support each other materially can a relationship thrive. The essay concludes that perfect love needs both partners to communicate openly while also respecting each other's independence, to find sexual harmony, and to focus on mutual well-being and comfort.

Lovers Introduction: D.H. Lawrence was one of the major novelists of the twentieth century. He was an important but controversial writer as the most important element of his writing is his own philosophy concerning sex. Sex, however, is the important and indispensable element to form a perfect love. All the novels of Lawrence are more or less autobiographical. But Sons and Lovers is almost a carbon copy of the authors life. The principal characters of the novel and the central situations are drawn from Lawrences early life. Thus, by this novel we can get more close to the author and find out his truly intention to write this book. Thesis Statement: Through the four failed relationships of Mr. and Mrs. Morel, Paul and Miriam, Paul and Clara, William and Lily, the author implied that love without freedom and communication, materialism and sex is not going to be perfect and long lasting. I. Freedom and communication are important elements to run a marriage. A. Example of Walter Morel and Gertrude Morel 1. Walter Morel and Gertrude Morel fall in love with each other by the first sight because of passion but their relation also broken quickly when they realized that there are no common topics and there are various restrictions between them. 2. The broken relationship of Lawrences parents in his real life B. Example of Paul Morel and his two lovers 1. Paul Morel and Clara Dawes get madly in sex as soon as he broke up with Miriam Leivers. But Clara returns to her ex-husband the ending of the novel and Paul Morel remains single because there is only sex and no shared interests, which they both getting tired of. 2. Paul Morel and Miriam Leivers love each other but Miriam wants to suck Pauls soul which makes Paul hardly to bear. II. In addition to freedom and communication, Love cannot survive without sex. A. Example of Paul Morel and Miriam Leivers 1. Though Paul and Miriam can become a perfect soul mate as they know each other so well and love each other so much, they cannot get married because their body rejects to do so. Miriam is such a pure religious believers while Paul is so desired for sex love, and they both cannot bear for that opposition. 2. Lawrence and his first lover in his real life B. Example of Mr. and Mrs. Morel
1. Though Mrs. Morels relationship with her husband
begins to disintegrate, she still chooses to stay to take care of her husband and her children. For sake of children is just one of the reasons, another important reason is that Mr. Morel is actually an attractive man (at least when he is not getting drunk). And the harmony of sex is also the important reason for their marriage. 2. Lawrence and his wife in real life. III. Compared to elements of communication and sex, materialism seems embarrassed but it is of vital importance to make up a perfect life. We cannot blame for a material love because it is a natural part in human society. A. Example of William Morel and Louisa Lily 1. William Morel becomes engaged with Louisa Lily Denys Western for her hot body and sexual skill. But William is not really love Lily just as the girl is only greedy for his handsome face and capacity to earn money. If William is not died for over working, however, this couple could still go on for some days as they could satisfy each other. 2. Take Lawrances another novel Lady Chatterley's Lover to further support B. Example of Mr. and Mrs. Morel 1. We can learn from the novel that Gertrude Morel is a determined woman with strong desire. She expects for a better life and pins her hope on her husband, and loves her husband wholeheartedly. But she turns her attention to her sons in the hope of fulfilling her desires when she realized that her husband is just an alcoholic. 2. Lawrences poor childhood life Conclusion: Above the unsuccessful lovers, we can make conclusion that a perfect love cannot lack of the three main elements: freedom and communication, materialism and sex. Managing love is a mutual affair. Perfect love needs the both to communicate more as well as giving each other more space. It also demand a harmonious sex life as this is the most direct way to express love. Last but not least, a good living condition is the basic condition to maintain love. Thus, communication, materialism and sex compose perfect love, not a single one can be omitted.
