Fort Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade-runners supplying
necessary goods to Confederate armies inland. By 1865, the supply line through Wilmington was
the last remaining supply route open to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
USS NC Battleship was the lead ship of North Carolina-class battleships and the fourth
warship in the U.S. Navy to be named in honor of the State of North Carolina. It was the first
newly constructed American battleship to enter service during World War II, and took part in
every major naval offensive in the Pacific of operations. Also, it is the most highly decorated
battle ship of World War II.
Bellamy Mansion Museum, one of North Carolina's examples of antebellum architecture.
Located in downtown Wilmington, the mansion was built for physician and planter John Dillard
Bellamy, his wife, Eliza McIlhenny Harris, and their nine children on the eve of the Civil War.
Cape Fear River was first "discovered" by European explorers, and was thoroughly
documented in 1662, when an English explorer named William Hilton, Jr. embarked on a brief
reconnaissance mission exploring the lower Cape Fear regions.
Kitty Cottage: In January 1934 at about 12:30 in the afternoon, smoke was seen billowing
out of the Kitty Cottage, the well-known boarding house in which the fire began. Its rumored that
a cigarette lit during a card game started the fire, but others believe it was caused by an electric

Daily Writing #2
I am completely comfortable with my proposed semester long multi model inquiry
project. Downtown Wilmington has a lot of history. People film in Wilmington, make stores
there, ship products there, it is a very popular place. A lot of people dont know about the race
riots, the events that went on downtown, or about the previous culture of downtown. Lam and I
fast wrote and also clustered. I liked free writing because a lot of things popped into mind. Also,
with clustering we thought of topics we might not have thought of before such as monetary profit
and the ports of downtown Wilmington.

Daily Writing #3
I think it is very important for a research project to be interesting or at least intrigue to the
researcher. When you care about the work and want to learn more about the subject, your work
quality is usually better. When I was in high school I had do a scientific research project on fruit

flies and It really did not interest me at all. We had to research the reproductive patterns of
Drosophila Melanogaster. At a younger age, I could think of a million more things that would
have interest me. Reading long journals and professor posts was probably the most boring
project I have ever done. I always put quality into my work no matter the subject, so the quality
was great. Not everything is going to please you, but if its for a grade I will try my best. I can
look forward this semester to researching a very interesting historical part of Wilmington. This
will add to my knowledge of North Carolina, of the 1900s, and of the south. I love learning about
history so I am excited.

Last week I had a Biology Lab Journal Presentation. The week before last week we chose
partners, it was the first day of class so the girl next to me asked to work with her, I didnt know
anybody else so I said yes. The girl never had time to meet and the presentation was due the
following Tuesday. My partner made me wait till Monday to get together to do the project and
then 30 minutes after she pushed back our meeting time again on Monday, she said shes
dropping the class and cant help. I had to do this two person project all by myself in 5 hours. It
pissed me off beyond belief that someone could be so inconsiderate, but I believe in karma. I did
well on my presentation by myself so all in all its whatever.

Daily Writing #5
For Black History Month, I was doing a project on the Greensboro Sit Ins. There are
many sources for information on the sit ins and other events during the Civil Rights Movement. I
really wanted to find out what it was like and learn more about the situation. My bestfriends

great uncle actually played a key role in the Greensbore Sit In, his name is Joseph McNeil. I met
Mr. McNeil and he told me about his experience. Hearing someones first hand account of a
situation is way more interesting than reading about it. Since I had a first hand account from
someone that participated in the event, I had details that no one else would ever have and so
much information my project could have been a chapter book.

LBST Health & Quality of life we had an essay every month. The essay was supposed to
have a specific outcome. Some topics were diabetes, meal plans, the health care industry, and
mental illness. All these assignments had rubrics that you were supposed to follow. For mental
illness, you needed signs, symptoms, treatment, and an overall knowledge of the mental illness.
For the health care industry, you needed to talk about health insurance and Obamacare and pick a
side. If you picked pro or con, you had to stick to that side. The class had set outcomes; that you
would learn about public health and the importance of it. For the papers if you didnt follow the
rules you would get a bad grade.
Daily Writing #7
Job interviews are always nerve wrecking because you want the job. Most of the time
during a job interview, you need to make it clear you are a leader, a hard worker, and a good
team member. The hardest part during an interview is when you have to lie for your benefit.
Employers will ask a question similar to Your coworker is in a bad mood, being rude to the
customers, and slacking on their work; what would you do? They expect an answer like I
would apologize to the customers for my coworkers behavior and do double the work and tell
management about his behavior. This could be the answer they want or they could want I

would ask my coworker whats wrong and tell that person they need to act appropriately at work
and that I will help them if they are overwhelmed. One shows that you abide by the corporation,
the other one shows you are a good leader and team worker. Interviews can be a hit or miss, but
if you stay confident, have a firm handshake, and show that you are determined to get the job and
do the job above and beyond well, your interview will probably in the end benefit you.

The first time I used a computer was in elementary school. In elementary school we had a
computer lab and would go in there and do activities on the computer. Ive always had a
computer at my house but did not know how to work it until I got a little older. My first
experience with power point was in intermediate school (5-6th grade). In intermediate school we
had to do a presentation in dual language, I think my power point was pretty basic because I
didnt know how to work it. I think presentation tools help a person get their idea across in a
more attractive way to their audience.

The quote Everyday spent procrastinating is another day spent worrying about that
thing. Do it now, and move on with your life is relevant to me. Sometimes I will procrastinate
on things I know have to get done regardless, but I will wait to the last minute to do it. Most of
the time I wait till the last minute to do something I know it is not that challenging or it might be
so easy I just dont want to do it now. I usually do not procrastinate when it comes to hard tasks
such as bio study guides, studying for bio, bio lab readings, bio lab projects, or anything dealing
with chemistry. If I were to procrastinate on these subjects, I would really stress myself out

because assignments in those subjects I like to finish ASAP. So I guess Im a selective

procrastinator because I only procrastinate on things that arent that time consuming or
challenging.

The quote Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose,
means that research is something that intrigues you. You do your research, ask questions, and
find sources in order to explain the topic at hand. Most of the time research is formalized
curiosity, but if youre being forced to research a topic that does not interest you at all then its kid
of dreadful curiosity. I always find the best research projects to be the ones that intrigue the
person, a topic the person really wants to research

Lab Reports have to be extensive and detailed. When writing a lab report, you have to
write it in a way that any audience would be able to follow the experiment step by step. The
person doesnt have to have any background in science, they should be able to read your report
and understand what your experiment was about and how to conduct the experiment. If a person
fails to write from this perspective, only a scientific community would be able to understand, if
that. Also, to be a proper scientist, your experiments must be able to be tested and conducted by
other scientists.

1. Restoration: I will explain how the Cotton Exchange was restored and turned into
a retail outlet.

2. Tourism: I will explain how the Cotton Exchange is one of the biggest tourist
attractions.
3. Slavery: I will explain how the Cotton Exchange had a role in slave trade In the
1800s and 1900s.
4. Shopping: I will show how the Cotton Exchange is one of the major shopping
sites in Wilmington, especially downtown Wilmington.
5. Trade: I will present this point with history about the downtown ports on the Cape
Fear River by the Cotton Exchange

Daily Writing #13

The Cotton Exchange is a huge tourist attraction. From the outside it looks like one big
building but It is really several buildings connected by cobblestone and inside walkways. The
Cotton Exchange is filled with all different kinds of stores. For example, there is a native
American store, a gem store, a handcrafted jewelry several merchandise stores, a coffee store that
is dog friendly, an ice cream store, an Irish store, a German restaurant, a book store, an Asian
store, a bubble tea/organic living store. There are so many cool stores that make it hard not to
spend your money. My first time at the Cotton Exchange, I went into the Native American store
and bought authentic dream catchers for my friends in New York. One of my friends is literally
Native American so I thought it would be nice to give her a piece from southern Native
Americans.
The Cotton Exchange is an event, if youre not distracted by the beautiful brick, then the
amount of places to spend money will definitely distract a person. Also, there are many lovely
smells from the tea store.

The image I will be using for my semester long project will be pictures I have taken
myself of the Cotton Exchange. The best way to display this image is on the power point on a
blank slide. When people see this image I want them to see the architecture and appeal of the
cotton exchange. The building is very intriguing and I would like my audience to see the picture
and desire to visit/go inside. This picture should strike curiosity and make people think about the
Cotton Exchange, what it feels like to walk inside, what it smells like. The pictures will help
strike this curiosity.
Daily Writing #15
Officers nowadays have different uniforms. The uniform the officer is wearing in the
picture is outdated. A cop wouldnt be smoking or holding a cigarette near a child. Cancer and
personal health is important in 2016. The windows on the buildings are really old new windows
usually slide open on the side. The teacher is a woman, when now it can be a man. Also, I dont
know if kids are as excited to see cops now as those kids are back then.

Daily Writing #16

A tough decision I had to make while enrolled at UNC Charlotte was if this is where I
wanted to flourish. Also, my biggest challenge was seeing college as an investment because it
has no immediate monetary award. I kept going back and forth with myself if I liked the school
enough, if Im doing enough to make sure my future is as bright and as stable as it can/will be. I
decided to list why transferring to UNCW would benefit me and the benefits outweighed the
disadvantages and definitely outweighed the pros of UNCC. My family, financial standing, and

relationship played a role in my decision, but most of all my happiness was what made me make
up my mind. I want to have some ground underneath my feet, I want to build my credit, and I
want to experience life, not just the life behind a book. After receiving my acceptance letter on
Tuesday I couldnt be any more excited or happier. I get to be close to home so when my sister
and my niece come to visit I dont have to travel hours. I can get a good job from a helpful
acquaintance and tons of shadowing hours at NHRMS with the connections I have already
established.

Hello! We are Team Cotton Exchange. We did our semester long project on The
Wilmington Cotton Exchange. Have any of you been to Wilmington? * waits for kids to answer*
Its on the coast which means there are beaches! Who loves to swim? *waits for answer* The
cotton exchange in Wilmington is a really old set of buildings. These buildings were once used to
make and sell cotton in the 1800s and early 1900s. Now its a place to get souvenirs. You can get
a native American dream catcher, you can get t shirts, hoodies and hats, and you can eat really
good ice cream or have a sandwich at the Irish pub. They even have tours! And if you like
Halloween, they even have a haunted tour!
Shopping, food, history. Haunted? The Cotton Exchange in Wilmington, NC is one of
the biggest tourist attractions. Located in Historic Downtown Wilmington, it is located further
down front street, across the river from the USS Battleship North Carolina. In constant
occupancy since the pre-Civil War decade, the Sprunt Building was home of the Cape Fear Flour
and Pearl Hominy Mill in 1884the largest of its kind in the South. Then, Alexander Sprunt &
Sons rebuilt the structure to its current Neoclassic revival style to house the thriving cotton

export business. Since then it has become an establishment of small shops and restaurants that
attract tons of tourists.

I have started my e-portfolio. All I have to do is add more daily writings and extend two
of them. Also, I have to scan peer review that I got back and all the papers Ive gotten back that
needed to be scanned. I most likely will finish my e-portfolio this weekend, to get it out of my
worries. Im not worried about it, I have my stuff together this semester.

I want to learn more about the Cotton Exchange and about the history of Downtown
Wilmington. The Cotton Exchange used to be Champion Cotton Press, I wonder if I can find
someone that had a parent that worked there. I am just so interested in the history of my town
now. I want to know what was in the surrounding buildings. I want to know about the Port on the
Cape Fear River. I want to know about the slave auctions in the front of the courthouse and the
roles of slaves.

I find using multiple resources and seeing what is in common with all of the resources
gives the most valid information. Also, you cannot be lazy and not read a book or a long article.
Some resources will be long and old or hard to read, but you have to train yourself to pull
information out of any resource. In addition, going to a library and talking to a librarian or
historian, no one uses librarians anymore and they are filled with knowledge. We cannot just run
to google with all our questions, I mean we can, put a person right in your local library could
have all the information or know where to point you to, to get you the right information. I never
solely use Wikipedia when doing research, if anything people should look at the sources
Wikipedia cites and go to them.

I am happy with my group. I feel like we all trust each other and all know our project will
come out nice and informational. The members of my group each do their work load and do not
complain. Its been a pleasure to get to know them. I will miss them.
