Good morning everybody, we

First of all we would like to introduce our challenge, which is called Low Boom, and
we thought that the most effective way to get familiar with this phenomenon was to
create a video. Lets see it
VIDEO (speech registeded)
Imagine a world where you can fly from Paris to NY in three hours. (earth, zoom on the
continents, statue of liberty and tour Eiffel, two planes flying at different speeds).
Technology has made this possible, but are we sure that this is safe for people on the
Earth? Supersonic flight over the ground has been forbidden due to the annoying noise
generated by the sonic boom. (immagini del cono di Mach che investe lomino a cui si
rizzano i capelli, casa con finestre che si rompono/bicchiere che si rompe). Nasa is
trying to overcome this issue by using innovative aircraft designs. But what could we
do to arouse involvement in communities located under supersonic flight paths?
(comunit vicino aeroporti- altro aereo che investe gli omini a cui non si rizzano I
capelli). The answer is Track Your Boom!. (astronauta che prende dalla tasca il
telefono e lo da allomino-fine del video)

Presentation
Our application displays boom noise maps in real time and creates a data sharing
network among users.
This concept has been already successfully adopted to monitor traffic conditions in
roads and highways in over 50 countries. But what about to bring this technology up in
the sky? Our ambition is to provide a simple and quick mean to make people
comfortable with the idea that low boom supersonic aircrafts are not annoying for
communities. This would facilitate Nasas purpose to spread out its latest cutting edge.
Now, lets take a closer look at the main functions of this app:
Working in background mode, the application starts recording the boom noise. This
only happens when the presence of a supersonic aircraft is detected near the user. The
audio signal is then compared to the target N waveform which is typical of all
supersonic aircrafts. This is how we are able to distinguish this sound from other kinds
of acoustic disturbances. How are we using these data?
1. First of all, a visual comparison between the recorded signal and a conventional
supersonic wave is provided. In order to make this concept clear, you can have a look
at the supersonic boom wave generated by a conventional supersonic jet fighter and
the one produced by Nasa aircraft design which reduces the boom loudness.
2. With the help of a colorful scale you can easily figure out the level of perceived
noise and correlate it with other common disturbances.
3. Another feature of the app allows sharing the signals collected by different users in
a database. This form of crowdsourcing let us display in a very intuitive way maps of
the perceived noise level distribution over a specific geographical area. In this way, we
can trace noise just by hearing it and see the map.

Finally, supersonic aircraft can be a revolution in the transportation system. It reduces

time loss and improves the life quality. Our application will speed up this technology by
making people conscious that there is not any dangerous to worry about.
As you know one of the main goals of NASA is to bring people comfort and facilities.
Actually this application will bring confidence, safety, happiness and help people to
enjoy this innovation. Moreover, in developing a new technology, the community
support is very critical and important. Considering these reasons, the significance and
usefulness of this app is clear.

The solution is in our hand. We developed an application that tries to detect sonic
boom, and noise level in general , the sampled sound from the phones is geolocalized
and sampled with time information, so
The application shows the sampled noise level, in the desired time and area, so the
users could understand the current noise levels and compare with noise created by a
sonic boom in the area of their interests,
And noise levels in their area, and the users could tag noises, and the user could try to
find a sonic boom
