Lake Norman

Eric, Kaytlen, Kelly

Lake Norman is the greatest man made lake on the East Coast,
with 50.8 square miles of lake and 520 miles of shoreline. Our
group is very influenced by the lake, because we are located close
to the lake and have experienced it first hand. We have been
studying facts like the history, culture, and the benefits and
drawbacks since early January, 2016.

History

Early History
James B. Duke saw potential in the Carolinas for the textile industry and
wanted to use the Catawba as a source of energy
Came into contact with Dr. W. Gill Wylie in their search for information
about hydroelectric power
Wylie introduced Duke brothers to William S. Lee, an engineer that worked
to with the Catawba Power Company to build dams

Early History (cont.)

Southern Power Company developed, became Duke Power Company in
1927
Catawba had ten dams and twelve power houses by 1928
Bill Lee III (William Lees grandson) designed the final and largest dam

Duke Energy Timeline

Breaking Ground
The formation new dam would flood homes, farms, and entire towns such
as a small riverside village known as Long Island
Some landowners would not sell their land but ended up trading it for
future lakeside land
Ground was broken on September 28, 1959
It took four years to build the dam and another two to fill the lake.
