Whereas, Associated Students of USF is represent the opinions and
sentiments of more than 5,000 undergraduate students; and
Whereas, The President of the University of San Francisco has
signed and therefore committed the University to implementing the goals described in both the "American College and University President’s Climate Commitment" and "Talloires Declaration." ; and
Whereas, The President of the University of San Francisco, in the
USF 2028 Planning Document promises that USF will "act in an environmentally responsible way...educate students to issues affecting environmental justice...[and] offer on-site courses, programs, and experiences that help students understand and appreciate the complexities of our global reality." ; and
Whereas, The USF Conservation Task Force, appointed by Fr.
Privett, recommended the University "Adopt an institutional commitment to sustainability" ; and
Whereas, The University of San Francisco students, faculty,
departments, and auxiliaries have shown an increasing trend toward more sustainable practices; and
Whereas, Accomplishing these goals will contribute to a more
sustainable campus, attract the best and brightest students and faculty, provide a foundation for future leadership and contribute to a decrease in the University of San Francisco's overall carbon footprint; therefore be it,
Resolved, That the University of San Francisco is encouraged by the
Associated Students to meet the following sustainability goals within the next one (1) to three (3) years in order to reduce waste and therefore reduce the burden of cost:
(1) Support the movement by hiring a full-time
Sustainability Manager/Coordinator or adding additional responsibilities to an existing position in order to lead and maintain improvements to campus sustainability policy and coordinate efforts of all stakeholders. (2) Centralize and further incentivize procurement of sustainable office and teaching related products
(3) Eliminate the retail and administrative
consumption of polystyrene, plastic bags, bottled water and virgin paper on campus
(4) Foster interdisciplinary environmental literacy for
all undergraduates, staff and faculty
(5) Develop a comprehensive web presence that
highlights and organizes ongoing University initiatives
(6) Emphasize communications between students,
alumni, staff, faculty, administration and surrounding community
