Bicycles
How popular are bicycles in your home town? [Why?]
Nowadays using bicycles for daily journeys is very common in my country.
Most people feel that they are not fit enough, so many go to work or
school by bicycle for their healthier bodies.
How often do you ride a bicycle? [Why/Why not?]
I dont ride a bicycle very often. My workplace is an hour away from my
house, so it is impossible for me to travel on a bicycle every morning. I do
own a pretty bicycle, but I rarely use it.
Do you think that bicycles are suitable for all ages? [Why/Why not?]
Yes, under some circumstances. If the ground is not dangerously rocky, old
people and young children can enjoy riding bicycles anytime. The vehicles
must be suited to their physical conditions as well.
What are the advantages of a bicycle compared to a car? [Why?]
When you use a bicycle for transport, you dont have to go through heavy
traffic jams every morning. If its a short distance, youd better buy a
bicycle and travel on it. In addition, you will look nicer and fitter with
regular exercise day and night.

Describe a person who has done a lot of work to help people.
Id like to talk about Mother Teresa, who we may all know very well about. Young
people who were born after the year 2000 may not know about her since she
passed away in 1997. She was a nun who devoted her entire life to helping the
poor and hungry. She was born in Yugoslavia in 1910 and spent her childhood in
the country. She became a nun at the age of 18 and lived in Ireland serving God,
and after she moved to India, she lived the rest of her life there helping people in
poverty. She established the Missionaries of Charity in October, 1950 and began
her charity work by running hospices and homes for people with terminal
diseases. At the time people started to call her Mother Teresa, who was just like
a mother taking care of her poor babies. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1979 for her devoted work of looking after the starving and sick. Most people
in my age know about her since she appeared in millions of magazines and
newspaper articles. I especially remember her saying, Its not about how much
we give, but about how much love we put into giving. The mind was made of
pure love and she made her best efforts to give out love until the day she died.

Helping other people in the community

What are some of the ways people can help others in the community?
Which is most important?
There are many different ways people can do to help others. They can
participate in charity events, make donations, and do some social work. I
think anything you do for the right purpose is very worthwhile, but your
attitude must be the most important thing to be taken into account. Just
like Mother Teresa once said, How you help people is not as important as
how you feel about helping them.

Why do you think some people like to help other people?

Many people have their own ways to find a sense of personal fulfillment.
Some feel satisfied by looking after their families while others earn a lot of
money to feel pleased with their lives. I believe those who help others like
to have life fulfilling experiences in their own ways. Everything you make
your best efforts for must be rewarding, or otherwise you may lose
interest in doing it. By taking care of others who are in need of help, I
guess those people have found their ways to feel rewarded. I believe
selfless good deeds do not exist in the world. Everything seems related to
either your fame, fortune or your satisfaction.
Some people say that people help others in the community more now
than they did in the past. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

I agree with their opinion. Everyday life today is much more complicated
than in the past. People are often spoilt for so many choices they need to
make every single day, and therefore, they easily feel confused and
dissatisfied. Modern people tend to suffer from psychological problems
trying to achieve so many things in their lives. I believe people today need
to be continuously looked after by others since they are too vulnerable to
take care of themselves. People used to have stronger mentality, I believe,
and they didnt require other people to concern about their mental health.
To give you an idea, the suicide and homicide rates in my country these
days are among the highest in the world.
Community Services
What types of services, such as libraries or health centers, are available
to the people who live in your area? Do you think there are enough of
them?
I believe there are enough public services in my area. I can easily access
public libraries to read books and community centers to learn something
new, for example, cooking. The entire country has significantly grown up in
every sector; industries, education, economy and public welfare as well.
The people have come to realize that their well-being is more important
than anything else in the world. They have started to improve their lives by
trying many different things other than working every day, and the
country has been required to meet its peoples expectations and needs.
Which groups of people generally need most support in a community?
Why?
In a big city, for example, the elderly are in great need of others attention.

1 out of 5 senior citizens lives alone in Seoul, the capital city of Korea. It
may not be such an important matter when you live alone in the
countryside since there must be many others in the same situation as
yours, who you can make friends with. However, in a big city like Seoul it
doesnt sound so easy. Feeling isolated is hard for young people, but it is
even harder for the old who live alone in a city.
Who do you think should pay for the services that are available to the
people in a community? Should it be the government or individual
people?
If its a city, the city should pay for the services for its citizens. Local
councils are liable to bear the costs of running community services since
the residents in each area pay their taxes regularly. People living in an area
have the right to enjoy more convenient transport systems, better
constructed facilities such as parks and libraries, and improved roads and
highways. People always feel that they are entitled to better services in the
community, and when it is not fulfilled, they feel dissatisfaction. Thats just
the way it is.
