Research Assistant

The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University is seeking a full-time Research
Assistant to work on research related to weight bias and stigmatization. The individual will
provide a high level of assistance to the Director of Research and Weight Stigma Initiatives at
Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Research topics will include, but are not
limited to, studies examining weight bias in the media, the presence of weight bias in school
settings, and interventions to improve reduce weight bias in diverse settings.

Representative Duties:

 Conducts analytical reviews of relevant research literature on weight bias, stigma and
discrimination, in topic areas of employment, health care, education, interpersonal relationships,
and the media
 Researches and collects data through complex laboratory experiments assessing the sources
and consequences of weight bias

 Records and compiles information related to research data. Records and codes data according to
research specifications, which may include entering data into SPSS

 Processes and summarizes data using SPSS

 Assists in data interpretation and analyses

 Reports on status of research activities and delivers power-point presentations

 Makes relevant updates to weight bias section of Rudd Center website

 May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey
instruments

 Designs online surveys using Qualtrics survey design software

Required Knowledge:

 Interest in the fields of obesity, stigma, and public policy


 College degree in Public Health, Psychology, or relevant discipline

 At least some knowledge of statistics, research design, and data analysis

 Limited experience conducting research experiments

Required Skills

 Extracts and compiles a range of data from written sources, from individuals by asking questions,
or from one or several given databases, limited interpretation of data
 Use of one of several standard reference databases, such as PsycInfo and Medline

 Regular, skilled use of computers and software, including Microsoft Office 2007, and EndNote X3
 Performs complex experiments from start to finish

 Performs work with accuracy and punctuality

 Ability to work both independently and in a team

 Excellent organizational and project management skills
