Year 5: 2019-2020

Career: Obtain a professional position that encapsulates advising and


program development. I hope to work in an environment that serves
underrepresented populations. Work to maintain my connection with
community allies and youth programs and encourage their participation
in higher education.
Professional Development: Attend NASPA 2016 which will take place
in Seattle. Engage in self-reflection on my professional formation and
the congruence of my beliefs within my job.
Skill development: Learn how to mediate conflicts with students and
resolve issues that I do not have the answer to. Learn to develop
relationships with individuals who come from non-student affairs
backgrounds. Develop skills in working with adult learners such as
graduate students and non-traditional students returning to school. Seek
out knowledge resource on higher education law and policies.
Career: Develop new tools and programs as appropriate to my
department and functional area. Develop tools to support and increase
diverse student populations in higher education. Find mentors who will
nurture and support my path. Develop training programs to advance
diversity education and diversifying staffing in higher education.
Professional Development: Continue to self-reflect and build strong
ally-ship on campus. Seek out mentors and engage in critical
conversations about student access and success.
Skill Development: Learn how to negotiate the implementation of new
programs and practices with upper management leadership teams.
Utilize best practices in collaborating with faculty and other
constituents. Reflect on whether my leadership capacities are
congruent with my beliefs and emerging leadership models.
Career: Reflect on my experiences in student affairs. Strive to gain 2-3
years of experience in one position. Seek out opportunities to engage
students in creation of extracurricular activities such as clubs and
conferences.
Professional Development: Cross-collaborate with other institutions to
work on developing programs for student services that can be useful
regionally. Re-evaluate 5-year professional plan.
Career: Seek out opportunities for advancement. Seek out jobs and
advancement opportunities to utilize my capacities in developing
leadership and collaborative capacity.
Professional Development: Seek out new positions. Reflect on what is
my next step and what I am seeking to do in my next positionhow do
I want to contribute to higher education?
Personal: Research PhD programs
Career: Obtain a position that affirms my beliefs and changes I would
like to make in education/higher education
Mentor emerging student affairs professionals in their educational and
career development
Personal: Come closer to a decision about applying to a PhD or EDD
programs
Professional Development: Continue my membership in knowledge
communities in higher education.
