Grazie, per aver scelto come cornice del 13° Festival mondiale maghi
sordi, la nostra Cattolica. Siamo felici di condividere con voi qualcosa
che amiamo profondamente: la nostra piccola e accogliente città.
Speriamo di essere all’altezza delle vostre aspettative e che sapremo
entrare nei vostri cuori affinché questi giorni trascorsi insieme
diventino un cameo da ricordare con gioia.
Per alcuni giorni porterete la magia a Cattolica e così anche la Regi-
na, come noi amiamo definire la nostra città, si trasformerà in una
maga. Ci piace pensare a questa occasione come un buon auspicio
per la prossima estate. Viviamo tempi
difficili, ma finché riusciremo a circondar-
ci di persone ottimiste possiamo sperare
che il sole torni a splendere come un
tempo. La magia che portate non può
che scaturire dall’ottimismo e dalla vo-
glia di vivere. Una forza alla quale anche
noi attingeremo per un po’.
Vi saluto augurandoci di vivere una bella
esperienza e di trascorrere serenamente
questi giorni insieme.

Thank you for having chosen as the frame of the 13th World Festi-
val deaf magicians, our Catholic. We are happy to share with you
something that we love deeply: our small and friendly city. We hope
to be up to your expectations and that we will enter your heart for the
days spent together become a cameo to remember with joy.
For a few days to bring the magic Cattolica and so the Queen, as we
like to call our city will turn into a witch. We like to think of this as a
good omen for next summer. We live in difficult times, but until we
manage to surround himself with people optimistic that we can hope
that the sun returns to shine as before. The
magic that courses can only arise from the
optimism and the will to live. A force to
which we draw for a while ‘.

A nome del Consiglio Direttivo dell’Ente Nazionale Sordi –ONLUS- sono partico-
larmente lieta di portare il saluto e benvenuto più affettuoso e caloroso a tutti i parteci-
panti a questo straordinario evento che ci farà vivere una settimana di magia gioiosa e
incantevole nella città di Cattolica che si affaccia nella riviera romagnola.
Uno speciale saluto e benvenuto ai Maghi Sordi provenienti da diversi paesi del mondo
che allieteranno le serate con le loro magiche performance e faranno divertire e
sognare grandi e piccini. Se non ricordo male, l’ultima edizione del festival si tenne a
Riverside in California nel 2008 e il primo in assoluto a Lipsia in Germania nel 1986, con
l’obiettivo di promuovere e stimolare il multiculturalismo e la diversità come fattori
di integrazione e condivisione, ma soprattutto a dimostrare come le diverse abilità e i
talenti possono sintonizzarsi con le lingue dei segni
dei Maghi sordi proprie di ogni paese.
Davvero una bella sfida! Un evento che ruota attor-
no a tematiche fondamentali come i Diritti Umani e
l’autodeterminazione delle persone Sorde, il diritto
all’accessibilità e alla comunicazione, in cui tutti e
ciascuno saranno coinvolti e stimolati al dibattito,
ad imparare e a esprimere potenzialità, creatività
ed espressività tipiche delle Persone Sorde. I Maghi
silenti ci accompagneranno in questo percorso tra
emozioni e scoperte, divertimento e riflessioni,
riscatto e pari opportunità. Migliaia di mani e di
occhi saranno i veri protagonisti di questa settimana
mondiale dei Maghi e ci regaleranno non solo
momenti di aggregazione e di crescita culturale,
ma ci faranno vivere i cambiamenti di approccio
alla sordità che fanno proprio il modello sociale
della disabilità stessa basato sul rispetto dei Diritti
Umani -NIENTE SU DI NOI SENZA DI NOI- ovvero
che la nostra disabilità è una condizione consapevole che ognuno di noi deve e può
vivere con gioia e dunque la società deve tenerne conto in ogni processo di sviluppo e
organizzazione sociale.
Questa è la vera sfida, la più difficile senza dubbio!
Il Festival è dunque un’occasione straordinaria per mettere alla prova i diversi talenti, le
opportunità e le capacità degli artisti sordi che in una dimensione “magica”sapranno
trasmettere messaggi forti sulla questione del Rispetto, dell’Uguaglianza, delle Lingue
dei Segni e sulla condizione di ogni Essere che vive e ama. Sono certa -e lo dico con
grande emozione- che anche in questa occasione, i Maghi Sordi assieme al pubblico,
sapranno combattere ostacoli, barriere e pregiudizi, sensibilizzando l’opinione pubblica
sulla sordità, sui luoghi dove far interagire tutte le forze costruttive per affrontare il
presente e costruire il domani per i nostri figli e per la nostra comunità.
Desidero ringraziare calorosamente il Consiglio Regionale Ens Emilia Romagna, la
Society of World Deaf Magicians, la Cooperativa Sociale “ Il Maestrale”e tutti coloro che
hanno contribuito a realizzare questo evento, formulando vivissimi complimenti e
l’augurio di ogni successo e buon divertimento a tutti i partecipanti.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Deaf People National Body –ONLUS-, I am
particularly glad to greet and warmly welcome everyone attending this extraordinary
event which will allow us to spend a week of joyful and enchanted magic in the town of
Cattolica overlooking the Riviera Romagnola.
A special welcome is reserved to the Deaf Magicians coming from all over the world. Their
magical performances will cheer up our evenings, will make both grown-ups and children
dream and will entertain us. If I remember well, the last edition of the festival took place in
Riverside California in 2008 while the very first one in Leipzig in Germany in 1986, aiming
at promoting and stimulating both multiculturalism and diversity as factors of integration
and sharing and at demonstrating how diverse abilities and talents may get on the same
wavelength as the Deaf Magicians’ sign languages
of each country. This is really a challenge! This event
revolves around key themes such as Human Rights
and Deaf People’s self-determination, the right to
accessibility and communication, and encourages
each and every person to become involved and
to participate in debate, to learn and express the
potentialities, the creativity and the expressiveness
that are typical of Deaf People. The silent Magicians
will lead us to sharing emotions and discoveries,
having fun and reflecting upon liberation and equal
opportunities. Thousands of hands and eyes will be
the real protagonists of this Magician’s world week
and they will give us not only an opportunity for social
aggregation and cultural growth, but will also make
us experience changes in approaching deafness. These
changes result in an appreciation of the social model
of disability itself which is based on the respect for
Human Rights – NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US
– that is to say that our disability is a self-conscious condition which everyone of us must
and can live joyfully. Society must take this conception of disability into consideration in
any process of social development and social restructuring.
This is the true challenge, without doubt the most difficult one! The festival is therefore
a unique occasion to experience the different talents, opportunities and capabilities
of deaf artists who, in a “magical” dimension, will be able to convey strong messages
about issues such as Respect, Equality, Sign Languages and the status of every Human
Being who lives and loves. I am sure-and I say this with great emotion-that even on this
occasion, the Deaf Magicians together with the audience, will be able to fight obstacles,
barriers and prejudices. They will allow the public to become more aware of deafness,
and of all those situations in which constructive forces may interact so as to better deal
with the present and build a future for our children and our community. I would like to
thank the Regional Council Ens Emilia Romagna, the Society of World Deaf Magicians, the
Cooperativa Sociale “Il Maestrale” and all those who helped organise this event, and wish
success and good fun to all the participants.

Il Consiglio Regionale Emilia-Romagna è lieto di comunicare a tutti gli
interessati l’evento del 13° Festival Mondiale dei Maghi Sordi, che ci
intratterrà in modo speciale dal 23 al 30 maggio 2010, e che ha avuto
vita grazie alla sinergica collaborazione del nostro Consiglio Regionale,
della Society of World Deaf Magicians, e della Cooperativa Sociale “Il
Maestrale”.
La città di Cattolica, appoggiata alla riviera Romagnola, sarà la cornice
di questo speciale evento dove ci accompagneranno le performance
dei Maghi Sordi provenienti da ogni Paese, che avremo il piacere di
ospitare. Sarà nostro onore fare in modo
che il messaggio portante dell’augurio del-
la nostra Presidente Nazionale, Comm. Ida
Collu, il quale ci ricorda l’importanza del
rispetto della diversità come ricchezza e
dei Diritti Umani, sia il pensiero trascinante
che permarrà costante ed intenso nella
magica atmosfera donataci dai Maghi
Sordi di tutto il Mondo.
Il Festival ci offrirà, quindi, l’importante
opportunità di godere della creatività di
cui la Comunità Sorda Mondiale è capace.
E’ importante sottolineare un aspetto fon-
damentale di questo Festival rappresen-
tato dalla sua costante attenzione al tema
dei diritti umani, dell’integrazione e della
necessità nel mondo di oggi di superare gli
ostacoli e le difficoltà che i Sordi, i disabili
e gli emarginati si trovano ad affrontare.
Quindi, nonostante sia un Festival improntato sugli aspetti ludici, esso
non dimentica il diritto alla pari opportunità del sordo nella società
civile. Un’occasione tutta speciale, per noi Sordi Italiani, per non
dimenticare la nostra identità, i nostri valori, le nostre ricchezze e per
accrescere la consapevolezza e aggregazione della nostra Comunità
Sorda Italiana e Mondiale. Un caloroso benvenuto a tutti auspicando
nel buon gradimento di questa iniziativa.

The Emilia Romagna Regional Council of the Deaf People National
Body – Onlus – is pleased to inform anyone interested in about the 13th
World Deaf Magicians Festival. This event, organised as per the synergic
co-operation of our Regional Council, of the Society of World Deaf
Magicians and of the Cooperativa Sociale “Il Maestrale”, will entertain us
in a very special way from May 23rd to 30th 2010.
The town of Cattolica, overlooking the Riviera Romagnola, will be
the setting of this special event. We will be pleased to host the Deaf
Magicians coming from all over the world who will lead us to having fun
with their performances. Also, we will be
honoured to make the main message of our
National President, Comm. Ida Collu, as the
compelling thought of the event. Her wish
reminds us of the importance of Human
Rights and of the respect all diversities are
due as a form of richness. The gist of her
speech will remain unchanged and intense
while enjoying the magical atmosphere
created by the Deaf Magicians from all over
the World. Thus, the Festival will provide
the important opportunity to enjoy the
creativity that is typical of the World Deaf
People Community. It is essential to em-
phasize a key aspect of this Festival which
is its constant attention to Human Rights
and integration. Also, it highlights the Deaf,
disabled and emarginated people’s needs
of overcoming all obstacles and difficulties
that they have to face every day. Therefore, despite the Festival focuses
on playful themes, it does not forget Deaf People’s right to equal oppor-
tunities in civil society.
We, Italian Deaf People, may take advantage of this very special occa-
sion in order not to forget our identity, our values, our richness and to
nourish the feelings of self-consciousness and aggregation of our Italian
and World Deaf People Community.

A nome dell’ Associazione Mondiale Maghi Sordi è mio grandissimo
piacere esprimere a tutti voi un benvenuto al 13° Festival mondiale
maghi sordi che avrà luogo a Cattolica- Italia, dal 23 al 30 maggio
2010. L’Associazione esprime un sincero ringraziamento al presi-
dente del Comitato organizzatore del festival, Andrew Truffa, e a
tutti i collaboratori membri del comitato per lo sforzo usato nella
realizzazione del festival. Questo è il 13° Festival strepitosamente
cellibrato negli ultimi 24 anni.
Vi vogliamo ricordare che il primo Festival
Internazionale maghi sordi si è svolto a
Lipsia, Germania dell’Est, nel 1986 con
l’ intento di unire per la prima volta nella
storia maghi sordi provenienti da diversi
paesi, di coltivare amicizie e scambiare
idee e miglioramenti ottenuti nelle
proprie abilità di prestazione.
Oggi ci sono almeno 300 maghi sordi ,
sia amatori che professionisti a tempo
pieno o parziale in tutto il mondo. La loro
missione è esibire le proprie competenze
magiche a bambini e adulti udenti e non
udenti nelle loro città, province o stati. Il
nostro intento è di offrirvi una vacanza
piacevole, dalla quale porterete con se
esperienze d’ apprendimento meravi-
gliose nonche memorie preziose partecipando in gare magiche e
incontrando altri maghi sordi provvenienti da tutto il mondo.
Divertitevi partecipando alle favolose manifestazioni magiche du-
rante tutta la settimana! Vi auguriamo tanta eccitazione, sentirete
eccitati, arricchiti e divertimento. Siate eccitati!

On behalf of the Society of World Deaf Magicians, it is my supreme
pleasure to welcome you all to the 13th World Deaf Magicians Festival
in Cattolica, (Rimini) - Italy during this week of May 23-30, 2010.
The Society truly wants to applaud the Festival Organizing Committee
President Andrew Truffa and his hard-working committee members
for striving to keep the momentum going. This is the 13th Festival
dazzlingly celebrated out of the last 24 years. You must remember
that the first International Festival was
established in Leipzig, East Germany in
1986 to bring deaf magicians from diffe-
rent countries together to foster friendship
and exchange ideas and improvements in
their performance skills for the first time
in history.
Today there are at least 300 deaf amateur,
part-time, and full-time professional deaf
magicians around the world. They have
as their lifetime goal, performing their
magic shows to both deaf and hearing
children and adults in their different ho-
metowns, states, provinces, and countries.
It is our goal that you will find your time
here to be enjoyable, and leave Cattolica
with wonderful learning experiences
and cherished memories of participating
in magic competitions—and meeting other deaf magicians from
around the world.
Enjoy the fabulous and magical festival programs during this week
long event! You’ll Be Excited, Enriched and Entertained.

E’ un grande piacere ed un grande onore scrivere questo saluto di
benvenuto a tutti i partecipanti del World Deaf Magicians Festival.
Un appuntamento ormai diventato una solida realtà essendo ormai
giunto alla tredicesima edizione ed è motivo di particolare orgoglio
che questa sia organizzata in Italia. Ben conosco le difficoltà e gli
sforzi che richiedono la preparazione di un tale evento, essen-
do ormai da molti anni che mi occupo della organizzazione del
congresso del Club Magico Italiano di Abano Terme, e collaboro a
quella di diversi congressi internazionali.
Per questo ritengo doveroso un plauso
a tutto lo staff dell’organizzazione per
l’encomiabile lavoro compiuto, che
testimonia l’amore e la passione per la
nostra Arte.
Un plauso che però, mi sento di estende-
re a tutti voi perché il vostro entusiasmo

It’s a great pleasure and an honor to write this greeting of welcome
to all participants of the World Deaf Magicians Festival.
An appointment has now become a solid reality being now come
to the thirteenth edition and is a source of particular pride that it is
organized in Italy. Knew the difficulties and efforts that require the
preparation of such an event, since many years now I am in charge
of organizing the Congress of the Italian Magic in Abano Terme,
and collaborate with that of several international conferences. For
this I feel obliged to commend all the
staff organization for the commendable
work done, who witnesses the love and
passion for our art.
A praise but I feel to extend to you
because your enthusiasm for the magic
are the proof that nothing is impossible
when our guide is the love for what we’re
doing, and also cause for deep reflection
for all of us.
May you live a wonderful conference and
this week is full of magical satisfaction.

I extend to all of you a most cordial and warm welcome as an
organizer of the International Festival of Magic and the Republic of
San Marino as president AAMS young but prestigious association
that brings together many wonderful adepts of this art which I am
honored to represent.
I thank my old friend Andrew and fraternal organizational values and
creator of this event for inviting me to the opportunity to perform.
I commend the commitment and
dedication that is putting us to make this
conference a memorable event.
I therefore make all participants in this
conference wishes for a pleasant stay in
Cattolica, a lively and creative ... a little
‘magic.
I am sure that these five days dedicated

o nella tipica trattoria, magari in terrazza e a lume di
candela, vi attende la migliore tradizione romagnola
o la più prestigiosa cucina internazionale.
La serata si presenta a Cattolica con le sue mille luci,
la musica e l’allegria e invadono le piazze, i viali e le
strade, con mille opportunità di divertimento e sva-
go per tutta la notte.
Cattolica Vi offre veramente tutto quello che deside-
rate in vacanza e forse anche di più!

Florence: (Italian: Firenze) is the capital city of the region of Tuscany
and of the province of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany

The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its
importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance for its

Magicians
Il primo Festival Internazionale maghi sordi si è svolto a Lipsia nel
1986, ideato da Horst Bormann di Lipsia che riuscì a portare maghi
sordi provenienti da diversi paesi per gareggiare insieme con spirito
di amicizia.
Il festival si tiene ogni due anni in diverse località. La seconda e
terza edizione del festival ebbero luogo a Lipsia nel 1988 e 1990. La
quarta a Kiev, in Ucraina, nel 1992, poi Lipsia, nel 1994. Rochester,
New York, Stati Uniti d’America, 1996; Londra, Inghilterra, 1998;
Nagpur, India, nel gennaio 2000; a Mosca, Russia, 2002; a Lipsia,
Germania, 2004; San Pietroburgo, Russia, 2006; e l’ultima a Riversi-
de, California, Stati Uniti d’America, nel 2008.
La 13 edizione del Festival Mondiale dei maghi sordi si svolgerà a
Cattolica (RN) nella primavera del 2010 (vedi la Storia WDMF per
trovare tutte le edizioni e rispettivi vincitori!). Le categorie di magia
dove competeranno i maghi sono magia da palcoscenico, magia
comica, micro-magia, magia per bambini e magia femminile.
La missione dell’Associazione è di portare tutti i giovani e gli adulti
maghi sordi, amatori, professionisti e semi-professionisti a par-
tecipare al festival internazionale per motivi di amicizia, scambio
di idee e tecniche di magia; per risolvere problemi tecnici; parte-
cipare a concorsi; frequentare lezioni con interpreti per imparare
nuovi trucchi o migliorare le proprie competenze; per sapere dove
acquistare attrezzature, trucchi o oggetti magici, e per promuovere
i propri spettacoli di magia in nazioni diverse. In tutto il mondo ci
sono almeno 300 maghi sordi amatori e semi-professionisti. La loro
missione è di divertire attraverso le loro competenze magiche uden-
ti e non udenti, bambini ed adulti nelle loro città, province o stati.
Nel 1990 l’Associazione mondiale maghi sordi si è data una nuova
organizzazione. I quadri generali, presidente e segretario generale
sono eletti ogni 2 anni per portare supporto agli organizzatori del
festival, metterli in contatto con altri maghi, creare elenchi di nomi
ed indirizzi di maghi per le future edizioni, migliorare i regolamenti
del festival, mantenere i rapporti con le organizzazioni nazionali ed
internazionali di maghi come l’International Brotherhood of Ma-
gicians, pubblicizzare gli eventi ed i successi dei maghi sordi negli
ambienti degli udenti e dei sordi.
Questi sono gli obiettivi importanti per realizzare i programmi
dell’Associazione:
- Incoraggiare la partecipazione di maghi sordi sia giovani che
donne,
- Rendere note ai club magici e organizzazioni i bisogni dei maghi
sordi per migliorare la comunicazione e
The first International Deaf Magicians Festival took place in Leipzig,
East Germany in 1986. Horst Bormann of Leipzig, Germany conceived
the idea of establishing this festival and had brought deaf magicians
from different countries to gather together there for the spirit of cama-
raderie and competition.
Every two years the festivals were held at the following sites: 2nd
festival in Leipzig, 1988; 3rd in Leipzig, 1990; 4th in Kiev, Ukraine,
1992; 5th in Leipzig, 1994; 6th in Rochester, New York USA, 1996; 7th
in London, England, 1998; 8th in Nagpur, India in January, 2000; 9th
in Moscow, Russia, 2002; 10th in Leipzig, Germany, 2004; 11th in St.
Petersburg, Russia, 2006; and 12th in Riverside, California, USA, 2008.
The 13th World Deaf Magicians Festival will take place in Cattolica,
Italy in the spring of 2010 (See the WDMF History to find all editions
and winners!). The particular categories of magic competition that are
participated by deaf magicians are stage magic, comedy magic, micro-
magic; children’s magic; and women in magic.
The Society’s mission is to bring all deaf young and adult magicians
amateur and part-time professional to participate in the international
festivals for many valuable purposes camaraderie, exchange of ideas
and improvements in their performance skills; solving technical pro-
blems; participating in competitions; attending magic lectures with in-
terpreters provided to learn new tricks or improve their skills; learning
where to purchase magic apparatuses or props; and promoting their
magic shows available to other national deaf clubs and associations in
different countries. There are at least 300 deaf amateur and semi-
professional magicians around the world. They have their lifetime goal
of entertaining their magic performances to deaf and hearing children
and adults in their hometown, state, province or country.
The new organization of the “Society of World Deaf Magicians” was
formed in 1990. The president, secretary-general and board member
are elected every two years to help consulting the next international
festival organizers; keeping in touch with other magicians; listing the
directory of the names and addresses of deaf magicians for future
requests by national deaf associations; developing the appropriate fe-
stival competition rules; keeping relationships with hearing magicians’
national and international organizations including the International
Brotherhood of Magicians; and publicizing the deaf magicians’ achie-
vements in the deaf and hearing worlds.
The following important goals to accomplish in the Society’s programs
are:
- Encouraging deaf female magicians and also deaf young magicians
to participate in the festival competitions,

- Inviare newsletter ai maghi sordi ed in un futuro prossimo, preve-
dere la sottotitolatura nelle produzioni video.
I maghi sordi provenienti da paesi diversi hanno trucchi magici
legati alla propria cultura, sebbene ce ne siano alcuni simili perché
utilizzano gli stessi oggetti come corde, carte, palline. Possono
tuttavia avere diversi tipi di tavolini magici, oggetti. Visto che anche
il linguaggio dei segni è diverso, si chiede di limitarsi nel parlare
durante lo spettacolo ed utilizzare solo segni e movimenti interna-
zionali.
- Helping hearing magic clubs and organizations become aware of
deaf magicians’ capabilities and needs for better communication and
update information on new magic tricks, especially hiring sign langua-
ge interpreters to magic lectures at local-, national-, and international-
level magic gatherings or conventions,
- Promoting regional deaf magicians festivals (for example, European
Deaf Magicians Festival, U.S.-Canadian Deaf Magicians Festival, Asian
Deaf Magicians Festival, so on),
- Publishing international newsletters for deaf magicians, and
- Installing closed captions on the videocassettes of hearing magicians’
lectures for deaf and hard of hearing magicians in the near future.
All deaf magicians from different countries have their unique magic
tricks pertaining to their respective cultural traditions, although some
of the tricks are similar, due to the traditional customs such as cups and
balls, rope trick, card tricks. In contrast, many of them have their diffe-
rent magic tables, props and attires. In spite of their different national
sign languages, they do not need much talk while performing except
for using a very small number of international signs and gestures as
well.
