Lesson: 10-5 Correlation Coefficient

My Response:

1. Because the points are random I would give it a 0

2. I would say .85 for this one because some of the points are staked
on top of one another.
3. I would say a .80 for this one, because I feel that it is similar to the
one above, but not AS positive as that one. There are more
close/stacked points than in the one previously assessed.
4. While I put neither for the correlation, I can still see that it is more
on the negative side towards the right of the graph, so I would give
this a -.25.
5. This is obviously a negative correlation, I would give this a -.95
because some points do share a line with another point.

As for the website, I didn’t really understand the concept at first, but
after a while it made more sense.

Response to Classmates

1. 0, It doesn't look to me like there is really any correlation at all..the

points are very random.
2. .90, The correlation is a pretty strong positive one in this graph. It
is close to a straight line, with just some scattered points to the
side.
3. .85, The correlation here is also a pretty strong positive one, but
not as strong as the last graph, because it is a little more scattered
rather than perfectly straight up.
4. -.30, It is really pretty scattered everywhere, but it is still obvious to
me that there is somewhat of a negative correlation.
5. -.95, This correlation is very strong negative. I don't want to say
that it is 100% negative, so I just made it close.
I did well on the Guess the Correlation site. I finished with around 35
out of 40. I thought it was easier to choose a correlation coefficient,
rather than come up with it on my own, but I would say that I did well!

We had similar answers, but I think you may have been a little bit more
generous :P I can’t believe how well you did on that site! Lol, most of
the time I did well, but I would be off by .1! it was tricky!!!:)

1) 0.2 because there really is no relationship at all within the points

and they follow no real direction.

2) 0.9 because these points were a positive correlation and they are all
in the same direction. There is a close relatinship between the points.

3) 0.8 also because the points were a very positive correlation and
there was a close relationship between the points.

4) -0.3 because like the first scatter plot, there really is no direction or
relationship between the points, however this is more a negative
correlation and it has more of a relationship than the other scatter plot.

5) -1 because it is definitley a negative correlation and has a definite

relationship and direction.

On the website I didn't do very well at first, I only got 1 correct. But as I
started to understand correlation more and how the points relate to
eachother I did much better.

I think we had similar answers, but for the last one I don’t agree that it
was -1 because I saw some points share a same line so I gave it a -.95.
But other than that we pretty much had the same idea.
