Intervention Update for MAY 2010

Documentation of Academic Interventions: All student participation in academic intervention

sessions including English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP), CAHSEE Intensive
Instruction Program (CIIP) and locally designed is to be documented in the student information
systems. Elementary interventions are entered in the Elementary Student Information System
(ESIS) as part of the attendance procedures. Secondary interventions are entered manually into
the Secondary Student Information System (SSIS) in ID17. Central offices access these systems
to monitor student intervention opportunities provided by schools.

Summer School/Intersession: Summer School/Intersession programs are tentative and may be

impacted by state and district budget reductions and policy changes. General education
elementary and middle school Summer School/Intersession programs will continue to be
suspended for 2010-11. The Beyond the Bell Branch in collaboration with the Office of
Curriculum and Support Services will be providing online resources including websites,
instructional materials and worksheets that students and families can access during the summer.
The online resources will reinforce learning and provide a variety of online projects and activities
for students over the summer break. Senior High Schools will offer a 6-week Summer School
Credit Recovery Program for students who received a D or F in an approved credit recovery
course. Senior High School Summer School will begin on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 and end on
Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Student hours are 8:00 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.

Extended School Year (ESY): ESY will be offered at all levels during the summer for all
students who are eligible as identified on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Elementary
ESY will be clustered at select elementary sites. Middle and senior high schools ESY programs
will be held at a comprehensive senior high school. ESY will run from Wednesday, July 7, 2010
through Tuesday, August 3, 2010.

English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP) / ESY (year round schools) / CIIP/ Local
Design Interventions: The Classification Report for all intervention programs (K-12) is due
upon completion of 6 hours of instruction. For elementary schools, the error-free Exception
Report and Statistical Report must be faxed together to the Local District Intervention
Coordinator five days after the end of each session.

2009-10 English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP) and CAHSEE Intensive Instruction
Program (CIIP) Funds: 2009-10 ELAP funds (Program 14192) and CIIP funds (Program 11195)
will not carry over. Funds in these programs must be expended by June 30, 2010.

Budget Planning for Intervention Programs: Due to the continuing decline of revenue from
the State and the current budget deficit, central funding for the Extended Learning Program
(ELP), before/after school and Saturday intervention programs, will be redistributed to local
school sites. In the budget planning process, school leadership teams should consider allocating
funds, including Title I, Title II, Title III, Bilingual, QEIA, GATE, etc., to support intervention
programs during school, before school, after school and on Saturday. Schools may also consider
funding intervention programs beyond the school year, i.e. Spring intervention, summer
intervention, etc. Funding considerations should include personnel (teacher, coordinator,
administrator, supervision, clerical and custodial overtime), instructional materials and supplies.
Snacks for Intervention: It takes 6-8 weeks to process approvals for snacks. Please
complete requests on the attached form at least 6-8 weeks prior to the start of the
intervention program(s). There are no exceptions to this policy.
