Jordan

HIS forward-thinking, safe state

in the turbulent Middle East has long
been a quiet favourite with those of an
inquiring bent of mind. For those fascinated
by Arab culture, it remains the safest
gateway, representing the best of the Middle
East. For those interested in seeing how
a constitutional monarchy remains not
just relevant, but also pushes progress
while maintaining traditions, Jordan
is the answer. Lately, its capital city,
Amman, has fi nally been getting its due
as a city on par with Cairo, with all
it has to offer the discerning traveller.
Why Jordan? Well, if you dont know your
past, how can you refashion your future?

Amman is redolent with the aromas of spices, tobacco

smoke and coffee. The Citadel, where the pillars, arches
and staircases chronicle 7,000 years of history over
a breathtaking view below, is unmissable. A mix
of Arabic and global culture, Ammans spirit can be
summed up in a cheeky T-shirt slogan: Wadi Rum and Coke.

THE DEAD SEA

The lowest point on earth and the saltiest sea; the Dead Sea
is vibrantly blue, belying its inhospitality to living creatures.
With resorts, spas and natural reserves nearby, its a mustsee, with added health benefits to be had with a dip.

Wadi Rum, an area of ancient riverbeds, is one of the most

stunning desert landscapes in Jordan. Camp overnight
with Bedouin hosts, soak in the sounds of the centuries-old
earth, and let the stars whisper Jordans secrets to you.

Uttar Pradesh

AMMAN

NE of the largest states in India,

Uttar Pradesh is equal parts
spirituality, mysticism,
architecture, beauty and hubbub,
making it a cocktail thats rather difficult
to describe. With traditions dating back
centuries, the people of this state are
steeped in some of Indias most indelible
traditions, especially in Hinduism.
Home to Indias holiest city, Varanasi,
ancient Buddhist stupas in Sarnath
and Kushinagar, and Allahabad, where
the Ganga and Yamuna, two of Indias
most revered rivers meet, Uttar Pradesh
is a journey of the heart, soul and mind.
The body is well fed in Uttar Pradesh, too.
The erstwhile seat of the royal nawabs
and current capital, Lucknow has
the tradition of delicious, slow-cooked
culinary magic to nourish the stomach
and taste buds.

Once a kingdom four times the size of todays Jordan,

the ancient sandstone city of Petra is today one of
the wonders of humanity. Egyptian, Roman, Mesopotamian
and Hellenistic architectural influences were brought here
by the ruling Nabatean trader community, with
the biggest monument, the Monastery, standing tall
as a grand culmination. Gape, puny humans.

INDIA

VARANASI
Varanasi is one of the holiest places in Hinduism.
The ghats, or steps, that line the banks of the River Ganga
are used for bathing, meditation and cremation; all linked
closely to Hinduism and its beliefs of reincarnation and
moksha. Loud and unapologetic, Varanasi will overpower
all your senses, and that is precisely why you must visit it.

AGRA
The Mughals almost did themselves a disservice with
the building of the Taj Mahal in Agra; with it there,
the other splendid examples of Mughal-era structures
like the Agra Fort, the Jama Masjid and nearby Fatehpur
Sikri, a sometime-Mughal capital, are often just footnotes
a wholly unfair situation. But thanks to the Taj Mahal,
Agra is also one of the few places where marble inlay
work, or pietra dura, still flourishes.

LUCKNOW
Charm and courtly manners fit right into the capital citys
culture of gastronomy and the arts. With the nawabs

encouraging art, music, literature, and yes, feasts, Lucknow

is one of the places where bon vivants have everything
they need. It also has history and Colonial-era heritage,
for those whod like a walk after their delicious meals.

Made even more mystical by
its desert, Rajasthan is dotted

astounding today. Arts and
handicrafts are nurtured
in villages, as are traditions,
and the state is a wonderful
blend of old and new. Visitors
here feel instantly at home,
and lose themselves in the
history and warmth of the state.

A SLICE OF HERITAGE
Fairytale palaces, mighty forts, and majestic royal
structures and outposts offer you a glimpse into
Rajasthans glorious past. There are also erstwhile royal

dwellings that have been converted into hotels,

allowing you a more intimate glimpse into
a bygone way of life.

FEAST FOR THE SENSES

Rajasthani food is delicious,
lipsmacking and unforgettable.
Given the water scarcity
in the desert state, the cuisine
places emphasis on dishes
that use milk and milk products,
last for many days, and dont
need reheating. Meats like mutton,
hare and boar are tenderised
by being cooked in yoghurt and milk.
Redolent with flavour and spice,
Rajasthani cuisine is also predominantly
vegetarian, with thalis being a popular feature in many
restaurants there, which also offer sweets before,
during and after the meal. Sit down. Let Rajasthan
treat you.

UNWIND
Wake up to gorgeous
sunshine. Take a walk
in the heat, encouraging
perspiration. Go for a swim
and lounge in the pool with a drink.
Plod out and head for a relaxing spa session in the warm
sun. Relax with a lunch by the poolside. Head for a tour
of the neighbouring villages and check out the traditional
arts and crafts or temples. Come back and rest, then get
an astrology reading. Have a drink outdoors, on the lit-up
