Feed the growing child properly and
you have helped to make a good citizen. Every
child has the right to a useful body and mind,
but in order to have either he must be given
the right kind of food at the proper time. The
food must do two things: first, make the child
grow; second, give energy for constant activity
in form of play or work. Until the child has its
growth, the food must make bone, muscle,
brain and all other tissues. The food should
contain many different materials as it supplies
many different wants. Children need more
food in proportion to their size than grown
people. Part of the food is used at once to help
the child run about and to make the body.
Meals should be given regularly. If a child goes
without breakfast he may tired out before
noon, and the parts of his body which are
growing will have to go without the material
needed to build them up at the very time. Then
we say, the childs growth is stunted.

Selection 3:
A turtle was washing at its rivers
edge of the water when, all of a sudden, a big
scorpion appeared from nowhere. My friend,
said the scorpion. I want to go to the other
side of the river for some important business. I
know you are a terrific swimmer. So, I would be
terribly pleased if you would carry me across. I
promise to repay you sometime, let me first
finish cleaning my house, then I shall give you
a ride, replied the turtle. When his cleaning
was through, the turtle said, Okay, climb on
my back, and lets go. And off they went.
Right in the middle of the river, the scorpion
said, I feel like biting your neck. Dont, said
the turtle, or well both drown. But the

scorpion crawled to the neck of the turtle and


bit him with all its might, Why, oh why?
asked the turtle as he felt the excruciating pain
in his neck. I thought I was your friend, he
added. sorry, but thats my nature, and I cant
do anything about it. Said the scorpion just
before them both disappeared into the water.
