Summary
MINING AT EMERNO AND TROGLAV (16th-17th CENTURIES)
The mine of emerno was named after a mountain. It was located on its western slopes, near the village of
Osonica. It was opened in 1558, and soon the works also started on the northern slopes of the mountain
of Troglav. Both mountains made a unique mining region.
Mining works were carried out on lead-zinc mine sites, and the excavated ore was melted in smelteries to obtain silver and lead. The annual production of silver was not large, about 50 kilograms on average. Two iron mines operated at Troglav, too.
Two ii hass, out of 15 villages in the nhiye of Poega in the sancak of Smederevo and out of 10 villages in the nhiye of Stari Vlah in the sancak of Bosnia belonged to the mine of emerno, and a unit of
martolos was assigned to it as security. The mine and the hs of emerno were together leased for the period of three years, and from 1588 for the period of six years. Almost all lessees were Muslims, and only
the headman (knez) Rajak is mentioned as a Christian.
Silver and lead mines stopped their operation in the 17th century, while the iron mine operated in the
18th century as well, and probably even at the beginning of the 19th century.

Miloljub Arsi
Summary
ANTONIJE RISTI PLJAKI THE DUKE OF KARANOVAC
Antonije Risti Pljaki, the Duke of Karanovac from 1807 to 1813, was a very controversial person in
Serbian history at the beginning of the 19th century. Being married to Karadjordjes eldest daughter, Sava,
and to a great extent protected by the authority of the supreme leader, he ruled the territory assigned to
him (the nahia of Poega) using cruel methods, so his contemporaries had bad memories of him. Even
later writers, while speaking about him, mostly presented his negative characteristics and his bad deeds,
whereas the preserved archive material from that period provides a completely different picture about
him. His role was especially important in 1813 when Pljaki was the commander-in-chief, above all dukes,
on the south-eastern front, defending Serbia against Turkish incursions, particularly in the trenches at
Topoljak and Deligrad. He was classified among great dukes, such as: Janko Kati, Jakov Nenadovi, Petar
Dobrnjac, Milenko Stojkovi, Mladen Milovanovi, Luka Lazarevi, Milan Obrenovi, etc. which speaks
about his reputation and importance in the then insurrectional Serbia. After the failure of the uprising, he
experienced the fate of other Serbian dukes who left Serbia in 1813. He lived in Austria and Bessarabia,
wandering from pillar to post, and died in Wallachia in 1832, in the town of Cerneti, where he was buried.
He was not allowed to return to Serbia for which he had fought, firstly as Karadjordjes soldier, and later as
the Duke of Karanovac. His family, i.e. his wife Sava, sons Kosta and Aim and daughter Marija, returned
to Serbia and continued to live there. His family line ended with the death of his sons who did not have
children, whereas his daughter Marija had numerous descendants.

Ivan M. Beci
Summary
The Royal Trade Credit Institute
Although two local monetary institutes operated in postwar Kraljevo, in 1924 the third one started its
work the Royal Trade Credit Institute. Most shareholders of this institute, the most important of them
being Lazar Kuzmanovi, were, at the same time, shareholders of the Joint-Stock Company Mataruka
Banja, which was founded in 1907. The main goal of the founders of the bank was to pool funds in order
to credit the Joint-Stock Company Mataruka Banja because the operation of this institution was very
profitable.
At the same time, the main person in the Bank, Lazar Kuzmanovi, realized the possibility, as the
chairman of the Managing Board of the financial institution, to increase his popularity and accomplish
his political ambitions. He was twice elected Member of Parliament, in 1927 and 1931, on the list of the
National Radical Party.
Operations of the bank during the second half of the twenties were successful, which also holds for
the Joint-Stock Company Mataruka Banja. Breaking out of the world economic crisis and its destructive
effect on the agriculture and private banking in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia prevented monetary institutions
from operating in banking sense. As farmers made the absolutely dominant number of clients of the bank,
their inability to repay loans brought the Royal Trade Credit Institute into the situation to reduce its
operations to repayment of debts and savings deposits. Even this form of bank operations was impossible
when the Second World War broke out on the territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Jovana Kolundija
Summary
The Picture of the Monastery of Mileeva and
Its Surroundings in the Records of Travel Writers
in the 17th and the 18th Centuries
The monastery of Mileeva is located near the town of Prijepolje. It was built as the foundation of King
Vladislav from 1218 to 1219. By its architecture, it belongs to the monumental Raka School, which is
characterized by the harmony between Byzantine and Romanesque elements. All frescoes from Mileeva
were painted in the period between 1222 and 1228. From 1236, the life of the monastery was very turbulent. The relics of St. Sava were transferred from Veliko Trnovo and Mileeva became the second most important monastery in the Serbian mediaeval kingdom. In the 16th century (1594), when the Turks suddenly broke into the monastery and took away the reliquary with the relics of St. Sava in order to burn them
in Belgrade, the life in the monastery and around it changed greatly. During the 17th century, the fact that
Mileeva remained without its patron was kept secret, and the monks from Mileeva spread the belief that
the relics were still in the monastery.
Prijepolje was situated on the main route from Europe toward Turkey and the Near East. At the beginning of the 17th century, although the Balkans saw difficult and unquiet times, people travelled a lot.
Numerous merchants, ambassadors, envoys, diplomats and other travellers who left a multitude of data
about this area passed through the valley of the Lim river. All those writings mostly refer to the monastery of Mileeva, and sometimes to the small town of Prijepolje. They frequently contain exaggerated descriptions, sometimes unchecked information or personal observations, but it certainly does not diminish
their value. The most important European travel writers who passed through this region and wrote about
it in the 17th century were the Archbishop of Antivari Marin Bizzi, the French diplomat Lefebvre, the travel writer Louis de Hayes, baron de Kormanen, and Evliya elebi. In this period, travellers from Dubrovnik
as well as monks themselves also wrote about Mileeva.
In the 18th century, the situation in the Ottoman Empire was even more difficult. Constant unrests
and rebellions affected both the population and the travellers who almost did not use the Dubrovnik road.
This road was extremely dangerous because of bandits who robbed and killed travellers. Due to such a situation, there is no clearer picture of Prijepolje and the monastery from that time.
Besides documenting the time in which they were written, the mentioned travel records represent a memory which has come from the past to the present in order to be kept for the future.

Geodiversity is the natural range (diversity) of geological (rocks, minerals,
fossils), geomorphological (landforms,
processes) and soil features. It includes
assemblages, relationships, properties,
interpretations and systems (Dixon,
1996, after Panizza M., 2009; 3342).

Duan Mijovi
Summary
PANIS RECONNAISSANCE SURVEY ON GEODIVERSITY AND
CURIOSITIES IN SERBIA
The research on nature in Serbia, which was conducted by Josif Pani in the nineteenth century, represents
a significant material containing different elements depending on the focus of observation. As Pani
taught geology and mineralogy at the Lyceum within the syllabus jestastvenica, a study on nature, he
recorded geological and geomorphological sites representing geodiversity of Serbia in his field research
and travel with students. He could not much rely on earlier research data because they were few and
mostly the result of reconnaissance or regional research.
Based on Pani`s itineraries in Serbia, 123 sites or phenomena representing the geodiversity
sites have been selected and 81 geological heritage sites have been marked within them (Table 1). Their
distribution is shown on Map 1.
In his research on geological diversity of Serbia, Josif Pani mostly recorded morphological
phenomena in the relief, such as closed depressions, valleys, gorges, canyons, tufa accumulations, springs,
sand deposits, mires and mountain peaks called viewpoints. Although viewpoints are not a morphological
form, Pani used them for observing the territory, plasticity of the relief and possible habitat types. The
review of geosites includes the fossil profiles and the occurrence of various rocks, especially serpentinites,
considering the fact that serpentinophytes occur on these soils. In addition to these sites, he recorded the
former mining sites or the sites of ore processing. These records were the starting point for the formation
of data base of archaeological sites. Pani also recorded well-known quarries, coal mines, and even
the findings of chalk in the surroundings of Makat on Zlatibor mountain, which was many years later
recorded by Jovan Cviji, too. Many of these sites, phenomena or landscapes are nowadays considered
geological heritage sites.
The great contribution of Josif Pani was the launch of a survey on geodiversity in the then districts
of the Principality of Serbia because the creation of the first systematic geosites database was thus initiated.
In addition to data on mineral resources and their use, the sites with elements of geoheritage, which were
then considered the curiosities of nature, were also registered. In that way certain caves, waterfalls, fossil
remains and archaeological finds were registered. In order to understand the significance of this survey, it
should be mentioned that the Inventory of Serbian Geoheritage Sites was first published in 2005.
The geological terminology introduced by Josif Pani in geosciences in Serbia indicates the concern
to find Serbian folk expressions, but also Romantic translations of technical terms in addition to the official
translation or transcription of foreign terms into the Serbian language.
Research results obtained by Josif Pani in his holistic approach to the study of nature and particularly
geological diversity of Serbia belong, according to all their elements, to the historical development of the
idea of geological heritage in Serbia.

Radomir Risti
Summary
The Census of Kharaj Payers of Joanica,
Upper Ibar and Jele (1833)
In order to fulfil the obligations from the Third Sultans Edict, at the end of 1833 the Princedom of Serbia
carried out a census of its male population for the purpose of collecting kharaj (tax per head), taxes and
bachelor tax both in the Novi Pazar nahiyah, in the territory of the Joanica captaincy with the Upper Ibar
and in the region of the Jele captaincy, in the villages between the rivers of Raka and Ibar.
The census covered only male persons, from an individual within a household, village or hamlet
up to the captaincy. In addition to the names and surnames of active and potential tax payers, it included
the data which defined the tax obligation age, marital status and a possible reason for tax abatement or
complete exemption. Those who were recorded were male members within a household, first the head of
the household, and then the others, mostly from the elder ones down to the younger ones father, uncle,
brothers, sons, nephews, grandsons and, finally, servants. There were examples in which the members of
households, besides the closest blood relatives, were sons-in-law, brothers-in-law, father-in-law, children
without parents and servants.
Occupations were rarely mentioned in the census because agriculture and cattle breeding were implied for the largest number of listed population. However, besides peasants and cattle breeders, in the
census one can also recognize the holders of power, priests, craftsmen, riverkeepers, field keepers and servants.
As a rule, children below seven and adults above eighty did not pay kharaj. There were individuals
who were completely or partly exempt from tax obligations because of their illness, disability, poverty, old
age, performing public works, two or three married sons, death during the census, because they worked
as hired labourers away from home and village, deserved prize for reporting those who evaded the census
or were children without parents.
On the whole, the census of 1833 in the Joanica captaincy with the Upper Ibar and in the part of the
Jele captaincy covered 95 villages and hamlets having 540 houses with 2499 men, among them 355 single,
873 tax payers and 1758 kharaj payers. When this number of male heads is added by the same number
of female ones, then it can be concluded that there were about 5000 people in this region, and each household had 9 members on average.
The census (defter) of kharaj payers of 1833 is a first-class historical source which, besides presenting tax obligations, also shows detailed demarcation between the Princedom of Serbia and the Ottoman
Empire in the territory of Joanica, Upper Ibar and Jeleki Klju. It contains valuable data for studying demographic, social and health circumstances. It is especially useful for onomastic and genealogic studies.

Summary
THE RULE BOOK
FOR FIELD SERVICE IN THE CADASTRAL SURVEY IN 1892
The text presents the review of the paper The Cadastral Department and Surveying of the Kingdom of
Serbia published in the journal of the Historical Archives of Jagodina, Koreni VI, in 2008, which deals
with the attempt of surveying the whole territory of the Kingdom of Serbia foreseen by the legal project
of the Ministry of National Economy in 1889, with the aim of improving all branches of economy. This legal project envisaged the Law on Surveying and Combining Immovable Property, which, besides consolidation of immovable property and triangulation of land, emphasized the high importance of elaboration
of cadastre and land registers.
The need for cadastral surveying of the whole country dated from 1884, when the incorrect and
careless work of the commission for inventory and evaluation of land caused damage both to individuals
and the state. Elimination of this injustice enabled the application of the prescribed Rules for Temporary
Survey of Land before Cadastral Survey, which allowed tax payers to require that the state should provide
the survey of their land in order to correct the incorrect survey of 1884, and then to regulate the land tax.
The rules are completely analysed with the stated practical example. They also mentioned the cooperation
between the students of the Land Surveying School and cadastral divisions, where the students had their
practice and gained knowledge so that they could, after finishing their school, become professionals necessary for land surveying of the Kingdom, as foreseen by the Rules.
The Rule Book for Field Service in the Cadastral Survey in 1892, for field work in cadastral divisions, which was based on the previously elaborated rules, was prescribed for the purpose of accomplishing more efficient work on land surveying. The Rule Book was published with its original text. It covers
XIV chapters which define both the survey and the corresponding activities, such as: organization of division, working time, penalties, control, etc. Chapter X under the title Field Works gives a detailed list of
work processes (detail surveying, tacheometric surveying, levelling and office works).

Tatjana Dragievi
Summary
The Collection of Inventories of Churches and the Whole
Property of Church Municipalities in the Archives of the
Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Budim
The Archives of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Budim keeps valuable archive material of Serbian provenance that was created in the territory of the Eparchy of Budim in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The material is classified into the fonds of administration, fonds of societies and fonds of endowments, then personal fonds and collections.
The Collection of Inventories of Churches and the Whole Property of Church Municipalities was
created from scattered material during formation of fonds while the archive material was arranged. The
collection contains more than a thousand inventories from sixty-seven church municipalities. Particularly important inventories are those for the churches whose material has not been completely preserved or
handed over to the Archives. The introductory part of each inventory had a description of the external appearance of the church, time of construction, time of consecration, description of the bell and the interior of the church. It was followed by the inventory of immovable property, liturgical objects, priests vestments, as well as furniture and objects for everyday use. One of the more important parts of the inventory
is the inventory of church libraries, which at that time had even several hundreds of books.
I hope that this paper will partly contribute to studying church history, but that it will also be of use to art
historians, ethnologists and other researchers.

Jasminka Markovi
Summary
Gusle Players from the Studenica District
at the End of the 19th and the Beginning of the 20th Centuries
in the Written Documents of Tihomir D. Djordjevi
The gusle tradition was deeply rooted in the former Studenica District. The data about gusle players in this
area at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries were collected by Tihomir D. Djordjevi,
teacher, professor and school inspector in this district. The material is kept within his personal fund in the
Historical Archives Kraljevo and represents interesting material for studying folklore in general.
The preserved data from some forty villages of the Studenica District provide details not only about gusle
players, their personal characteristics, skill, shrewdness, creativity and affinity, but also about a wider
social-political circumstances and changes. Thanks to gusle players, who were guardians and bearers of
cultural heritage and identity, various events from social and everyday life have been transferred to songs
and woven into collective memory.
It is interesting that gusle players were mostly self-taught or taught by older members of their
families and friends. Most of them participated in the wars between 1912-1918. They were cattle breeders
and agricultural workers, rarely craftsmen, and in the postwar period they were engaged in industrial
production. They interpreted their songs in ekavian and jekavian dialects, which speaks about different
origin of the population and their migrations in this territory.
Gusle was a constituent part of everyday life, through which the people of this region expressed their
national affiliation, system of values and feelings. Gusle players were very important and esteemed
individuals, chroniclers of their time, guardians of unwritten history and folk tradition, which they passed
down from generation to generation.

Summary
THE JURISDICTION OF ARCHIVES IN THE PROTECTION OF ARCHIVE
MATERIAL AND THE EXERCISE OF PUBLIC AUTHORIZATIONS
The real and territorial jurisdiction of archival institutions in the Republic of Serbia in the protection of archive material has not been legally solved in a sufficiently precise manner, which causes problems in practical functioning of the archive service as a whole. Besides their professional jobs, archives are entrusted
with certain public authorizations which classify them among special administrative organizations, and
even here the existing regulations do not provide operation of archives with full capacities of a public institution and a separate administrative organization.
The system of public authorizations performed by the archives has not been consistently and completely regulated according to the law as in other similar institutions, which results in the fact that the archives are not able to perform the assigned authorizations with their full capacity. The scope of professional supervision performed by the archives over the archive operation of creators and holders of archive material is very limited. There is neither strict organization of procedures and ways of acting in every phase
of professional supervision nor precisely defined rights and authorizations of both the supervisory subject (archive) and the supervised object (registry offices which are the subject of professional supervision).
The measures required by the archives during professional supervision do not have adequate legal power
so that they have half-way effects.
As the professional supervision over archives, i.e. institutions of protection is performed by the central Archives of Serbia, as the republic-level institution, and it is an activity of general and social interest,
it is necessary for the archive service to be organized as a unique service in the sense of its organization,
function, programme and staff. Archives must be state-owned and centralized. Since they perform the
same type of jobs on the protection of public archive material, it is necessary for them to possess the same
authorizations and responsibilities and to apply the same methodology in their work. The organization of
archives which has so far been based on the division of archives into state and local archives does not contribute to the quality protection of public archive material.
Elaboration of the Law on Archive Material and Archive Service should create conditions for the archives to perform the entrusted jobs of professional supervision, within the public authorization, with full
capacity and authoritatively, which is not the case at the moment.
Only a centralized archive service through the concept (model) of the state archives in the Republic
of Serbia and the standardization of measures of technical protection of public archive material can ensure
full protection of the Archival Fonds of Serbia and prevent destruction and disintegration of the public
archive material which is being created.

Summary
The Baroque Palace The Timioara Museum of Art
With the arrival of the Habsburgs (the Treaty of Poarevac, 1718), the look of Timioara considerably
changed in relation to the one from the time of the Ottoman Empire. Development of the town was
planned more rigorously, with a rectangular plan of the streets in which the main squares of the town were
built. That was a period when Timioara defined its appearance through the architectural style which resembled the baroque of Central Europe. The Palace of the Old Prefecture from Timioara, later known as
the Baroque Palace, was erected in the spirit of that building renewal.
In its almost 300 years of existence, the Baroque Palace has changed its name quite often depending on the dominant policy and the administrative re-establishment of the town. Its construction was accomplished in stages, simultaneously with the construction of the Main Square, the Dome Square, or the
Union Square, as it is known today. Having been the Presidents Palace and the Shire House in the 18th century, and the administrative centre of Serbian Vojvodina and Timi Banat in the 19th century, the Baroque
Palace got its todays appearance at the end of the 19th century.
After the Second World War, the Baroque Palace became the seat of the Faculty of Agronomy of the
Timioara Polytechnic Institute, later named the Banatul University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.
Initiated in the year 1983, the most recent restoration works on the Baroque Palace resulted in its
partial opening in 2006, and since then it has housed the Timioara Museum of Art.
The Timioara Museum of Art has more than 6000 works of art: paintings, engravings, sculptures,
decorative art and furniture. The paintings range from the Italian Renaissance period to the 20th century
European and Romanian art. There is also the most important collection of paintings created by Banat artists from the 18th century to the present day.

Katarina ivanovi
Summary
The Museum Programme as an Indicator of Social Cohesion
Social cohesion implies the capability of a society to ensure the well-being of all its members, to minimize
inequalities, avoid divisions and develop equal chances for all. This concept is omnipresent in national and
transnational policies all around the world.
Although it is included in the Poverty Reduction Strategy for Serbia, social cohesion is not widely
recognized as the purpose of existence of national institutions, particularly cultural institutions and museums. In the past years, the results achieved in that direction by civil society organizations have been increasingly noticeable, while those of national institutions have been hardly visible.
The Museum of Yugoslav History is one of the institutions which carefully build their strategic
framework supporting the basic elements of social cohesion, such as better quality of life, division of responsibilities and development of integrity. The annual report of the Museum clearly presents a large
number of different communities gathered by the Museum, discussion programmes open for confrontation of different opinions and development of tolerance, free programmes, as well as programmes for
promotion of human rights and humanitarian actions. It is possible to define all these measurable indicators as the indicators of development of social cohesion, i.e. indicators of contribution of the Museum
to the development of this process.
In order to create preconditions for a broader social involvement of the Museum of Yugoslav History, besides the change of its strategic framework, it is necessary to ensure permanent education of its custodians, which will help in the creation of an atmosphere in which experts share common values and are
ready to do everything to enable all those interested to feel invited to take part in the creation of museum
programmes. Also, it is extremely important for future museum interpretations to be based on compromise as little as possible, and to be based on a dialogue as much as possible, which may, but does not necessarily have to, lead toward consensus.
Although the Museum of Yugoslav History is clearly determined to support social development, further progress is not possible without a more serious support of other organizations, especially relevant ministries, through the development of transparent policies, strategies and instruments of its implementation.

Summary
Living in Kraljevo 19391941
The paper contains a literal transcript of the conversation with Danica Jovii (1920) from Zrenjanin and
her testimony about the shooting of hostages in Kraljevo. Her husband Milutin Martinov, a locksmith
in the Wagon Factory, was among them. Besides mentioning the concrete victims of the shoooting, during the conversation the collocutor highlights the everyday life in Kraljevo immediately before the beginning of the Second World War and during the war. Special attention is paid to the other victims originating from Banat and their families.

Tatjana Mihailovi
Summary
Museum as a bank of complex cultural data
A remarkable change of the social environment in the 21st century indirectly requires a change of mission
of the museum which should respond to these challenges if it wants to remain a valid and necessary social institution. It seems that the museum must make several new steps in order to leave the position based
on the presentation of collections and become a place where it is possible to interpret (understand) society and its history in modern communication frameworks. To make this process possible, it is necessary
to have interdisciplinary scientific work which tends to build documentation and information corpora,
which refer not only to the study of objects, but also to their context and a wider social environment, as
well as reflections in modern culture. The beginning of the paper states an example from the National Museum in Kraljevo, which illustrates good practice in this sense.
It is about the Czech family Marzik one of its members was Vladislav Marzik, the first academytrained painter from Kraljevo which represents a relatively small and local topic, but which showed noticeable and important changes in the approach, which is interdisciplinary (art, history, architecture, urbanism). Here the museum appears not only as the owner of the most important works of the concrete
artist, but also as the official holder of the complete documentation about him, about the professional and
critical evaluation of his opus, realized through an integrated approach. Hence, the documentation appears as the totality of data, interpretations and ideas and transforms into a cultural resource. New qualities are reflected in the possibility of understanding certain processes that have happened in the domain
of culture, as well as their nuances and wealth.
However, the real challenge is to consider a big and global topic, such as the Middle Ages, in the light
of an integrated approach to the field of work (research and interpretation). Within the territory covered
by the National Museum in Kraljevo (the municipalities of Kraljevo and Raka), it is fully justified, because it is the basic territory where the Nemanjis mediaeval state was established. This opens a very important question in the positioning of a museum of complex type, the so-called local heritage museum
and the change in understanding its tasks and responsibilities, i.e. its mission. The key point for development of the integrated approach is collection and uniting of the results of research of different scientific disciplines, but the museum does not necessarily have to be the holder of scientific projects. If it has professional capacities, it can organize a lot of forms of work on its own, and it can also offer cooperation to freelance researchers, direct volunteers work or create common projects with scientific institutions, but it is
very important that the results, material and the possibility of final interpretation remain in the museum.
The original material like fresco paintings in fragments and stone sculptures, with a digital collection of
immovable heritage, including painting, architecture and sculpture, and with collections of copies of frescoes, sculptures and manuscripts, now represents, if only the level of art is observed, a rich resource for
complex interpretation with a high communicative potential toward the public. It can be added by archaeological material as well as by the potential of analyses of anthropological material for studying the mediaeval population and their way of living, migrations and health. This way of work is presented on the second example from the surroundings of Kraljevo, but this time a big one, of national importance, such as
the monastery of ia. It considers different nonmaterial aspects of ia heritage, which were laid in the
foundation of national identity, but which, on the other side, represent a vivid point of development of
new layers of culture and art, which appeared in Kraljevo itself and ia within the complex cultural manifestation, ia Spiritual Gathering, Days of Transfiguration, which has been lasting for more than 30 years.
Museum as a place where material is kept may become a vivid place of research, study, specialization, as it used to be during its Renaissance beginnings, open to experts of different profiles, who would
work in the segments which are not covered by the museum staff. The results would be processed fonds
and concentrated complex knowledge. Its own interdisciplinary potential would be used for complex cultural studies creating on both sides a bank of complex cultural data. All that would lead to the main goal
of the museum itself: high quality communication and presentation, understanding of heritage and recognition of its beneficial values, which resist cheap political manipulations and contribute to development.
