Subject Matter: Homeschooling- Statistics and Demographics Objective: To briefly review homeschooling statistics with an emphasis on initiating discussion as to what those statistics mean. A brief video will lead the class into the discussion with critical analysis questions being presented for the class to participate in. This interactive lesson will provide diversity students with a general understanding of demographic information on homeschooling and a foundation for analyzing that information. A secondary goal is to give future teachers and administrators an idea of what homeschooling statistics say about the situation in public schools and what they can do to address problems. Materials/Equipment: This lesson will be using: a PC computer, and overhead projector and screen, a white board with markers (if available), and a handout with excerpts from an article from The Atlantic. Instruction: Slide 1: Begin with introductions and state topic. Slide 2: Discuss reasoning behind choosing to present this topic. Slide 3: Purpose of this lesson. Slide 4: Short segment of a YouTube video about homeschool stereotypes. Slide 5: General statistics about homeschooling demographics. Questions. Slide 6: Reasons cited for homeschooling as given by the Washington Times. Questions. Slide 7: Race and ethnic statistics. Questions. Slide 8: Levels of parental education. Questions. Slide 9: Family income statistics. Questions. Slide 10: Compare homeschooling performance vs. public school performance. Questions. Slide 11: Conclusions about the information given. Slide 12: Resources Expected Outcomes: Audience members should be able to distinguish between homeschooling stereotypes and reality. Audience members should begin to understand the complex reasons behind why the homeschooling demographics are diversifying. Audience members will be able to critically analyze what statistics behind homeschooling could mean. Assessment Choices: Audience interaction with the presenter in the form of critical analysis questions will assess students deeper understanding of the information given. Students will be asked to write simple answers on the piece of paper provided.
