TheCanadianCouncilofDirectorsofApprenticeship(CCDA)recognizesthisNational
OccupationalAnalysisasthenationalstandardfortheoccupationofIndustrialElectrician.

Background

ThefirstNationalConferenceonApprenticeshipinTradesandIndustries,heldinOttawain
1952,recommendedthatthefederalgovernmentberequestedtocooperatewithprovincialand
territorialapprenticeshipcommitteesandofficialsinpreparinganalysesofanumberofskilled
occupations.Tothisend,HumanResourcesandSkillsDevelopmentCanada(HRSDC)sponsors
aprogram,undertheguidanceoftheCCDA,todevelopaseriesofNationalOccupational
Analyses(NOAs).

TheNOAshavethefollowingobjectives:

todescribeandgroupthetasksperformedbyskilledworkers;

toidentifywhichtasksareperformedineveryprovinceandterritory;

todevelopinstrumentsforuseinthepreparationofInterprovincialRedSeal
Examinationsandcurriculafortrainingleadingtothecertificationofskilledworkers;

tofacilitatethemobilityofapprenticesandskilledworkersinCanada;and,

tosupplyemployers,employees,associations,industries,traininginstitutionsand

Development of Analysis

Adraftanalysisisdevelopedbyacommitteeofindustryexpertsinthefieldledbyateamof
facilitatorsfromHRSDC.Thisdraftanalysisbreaksdownallthetasksperformedinthe
occupationanddescribestheknowledgeandabilitiesrequiredforatradespersonto
demonstratecompetenceinthetrade.

Draft Review

TheNOAdevelopmentteamthenforwardsacopyoftheanalysisanditstranslationto
provincialandterritorialauthoritiesforareviewofitscontentandstructure.Their
recommendationsareassessedandincorporatedintotheanalysis.

Validation and Weighting

Theanalysisissenttoallprovincesandterritoriesforvalidationandweighting.Participating
jurisdictionsconsultwithindustrytovalidateandweightthedocument,examiningtheblocks,
tasksandsubtasksoftheanalysisasfollows:

areofprimaryimportancetoindustryinCanada.Theseresponsibilitiesaresharedandrequire
thejointeffortsofgovernment,employersandemployees.Itisimperativethatallpartiesare
awareofcircumstancesandconditionsthatmayleadtoinjuryorharm.Safelearning
experiencesandworkenvironmentscanbecreatedbycontrollingthevariablesandbehaviours
thatmaycontributetoaccidentsorinjury.

Itisgenerallyrecognizedthatsafetyconsciousattitudesandworkpracticescontributetoa
healthy,safeandaccidentfreeworkenvironment.

ItisimperativetoapplyandbefamiliarwiththeOccupationalHealthandSafety(OH&S)Acts
andWorkplaceHazardousMaterialsInformationSystem(WHMIS)regulations.Aswell,itis
essentialtodetermineworkplacehazardsandtakemeasurestoprotectoneself,coworkers,the
publicandtheenvironment.

Safetyeducationisanintegralpartoftraininginalljurisdictions.Assafetyisanimperativepart
ofalltrades,itisassumedandthereforeitisnotincludedasaqualifierofanyactivities.
However,thetechnicalsafetytasksandsubtasksspecifictothetradeareincludedin
thisanalysis.

CCDA.Thisanalysiscoverstasksperformedbyindustrialelectricianswhoseoccupationaltitle

Industrialelectriciansinstall,maintain,test,troubleshoot,serviceandrepairindustrialelectrical
equipmentandassociatedelectricalcontrols.Theseincludeequipmentorcomponentsdirectly
orindirectlyexposedtoelectricalpowersuchasmotors,generators,pumpsandlighting
systems.Industrialelectriciansareemployedbyelectricalcontractorsandmaintenance
departmentsoffactories,plants,mines,fabricationfacilitiesandgovernment,andother
industrialestablishments.

Industrialelectriciansmustreadandinterpretprints,drawingsandcodespecificationsfor
layoutandinstallationofelectricalequipment.Theyinstall,serviceandmaintainelectrical
componentssuchaslightingfixtures,switches,conduitandelectricalcontrols.Theytest
electricalsystemsandcontinuityofcircuitsusingtestequipmenttoensuresystemsafetyand
compatibility.Theyconductpreventativeandpredictivemaintenanceprogramsandkeep
maintenancerecords.Someindustrialelectriciansspecializeinmaintenancefunctionsinareas
suchashighvoltageandprocesscontrols.

Industrialelectriciansmustpossessmanualdexterity,andgoodplanning,organizationaland
communicationskills.Theyalsorequirestronganalytical,mathematicalandproblemsolving
skillsinordertoreadandinterpretschematics,drawingsandspecifications.Theyshouldhave
goodmechanicalaptitudetoinstall,troubleshootandrepairequipment.Theymustalsohave
goodvisionandhearing,theabilitytodistinguishcoloursandawillingnesstokeepupwith
newdevelopmentsinthetrade.

Theworkenvironmentofindustrialelectricianscanexposethemtohazards.Theirworkis
performedindoorsoroutdoorsinextremeclimateconditions,andmaybeatvariableheightsor
inconfinedspaces.Otheroccupationalrisksincludeelectricalshocks,arcflashes,falls,and
injuryfromliftingandkneeling.

Thisanalysisrecognizessimilaritiesoroverlapswiththeworkofconstructionelectricians,
powerlinetechnicians,instrumentationandcontroltechnicians,electricmotorsystems
technicians,heating,ventilationandairconditioning(HVAC)technicians,telecommunications
techniciansandindustrialmechanics(millwrights).Industrialelectriciansalsoworkwith
processoperators,engineersandinspectors.

Withexperience,industrialelectriciansmayactasmentorsandtrainerstoapprenticesinthe
trade.Theymayalsoadvancetomanagerial,inspectionorteachingpositions.

OCCUPATIONAL OBSERVATIONS

Technologicaladvancementshavealteredthewayindustrialelectriciansperformtheirworkon
adailybasis.Computersareincreasinglybeingusedforresearch,communication,
programming,ordering,recordkeepinganddiagnostics.Testingequipmentisbecomingmore
preciseanduserfriendlyallowingfortroubleshootingtobelesstimeconsuming.

Inthemaintenanceofindustrialelectricalequipmentandsystems,inspectionisevolvingintoa
morecriticalareaoffocus.Infact,inspectionisgainingmoreimportanceinassuringthehealth
andsafetyofemployeesandthecontinuedsmoothandsafeoperationofmachinery
andcomponents.

Thecombinationofvariousfactorsinthepresenceofafaultmaycauseanarcflash,anextreme
explosion,whichcouldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.Injuriescausedbyarcflashhaveledto
heightenedsafetymeasures.Newpractices,procedures,safetyequipmentandjurisdictional
regulationshavebeencreatedandimplementedinordertoaddresstheissue.

Predictiveandpreventativemaintenanceprograms,usingcomputerizedmaintenance
managementsystems(CMMSs),arebecomingmoreprevalentintheworkplace.Thesesystems
haveenhancedefficiencyandorganizationofthetasksrequiredformaintenanceofelectrical
systems.Theyalsocentralizeotherfunctionssuchastrends,componentordering,project
control,history,costing,workhoursandtoolcribs.

Programmablelogiccontrollers(PLCs)anddistributedcontrolsystems(DCSs)facilitatethe
monitoringandcontrolofindustrialprocessesandbuildingcontrols.Thisequipmenthas
becomemoreuserfriendlyandaffordable.Smallerunitsarereadilyavailableforavariety
ofapplications.

Digitaltechnologyhasfacilitatedtheuseofnewcomponents,makingthetrackingofenergy
usagemorereliableandefficient.Itissimplertoreplacemanyoftheoldpartsanddevicesnow
thattheyaresmallerandavailableindigitalformat.

Inmanysectorsofindustry,robotictechnologyisbeingutilized.Therefore,someindustrial
electriciansarenowrequiredtodevelopspecializedskillstokeepabreastofthis
newtechnology.

Theworkloadforindustrialelectricianshasincreasedinprocesscontrol,environmentalcontrol
andbuildingcontrolsystems.Thereisnowanincreasedemphasisonaccountabilityforsafety
intheworkplace.
