In the Shakespearean play, Much Ado About Nothing ,Beatrice is really fierce and
sassy. She doesnt think that she needs a man, but deep inside, she loves Benedick.
She is just afraid of commitment. To her men are useless and a pain. Not till God make
men of some other metal than earth. Would it not grieve a woman to be overmastered
with a piece of valiant dust? I To make an account of her life to a clod of wayward marl?
Beatrice says until men are no longer made of dirt, a clump of sinful earth, then she is
not interested. A dear happiness to women. They would else have been troubled with
a pernicious suitor. I thank God and my cold blood I am of your humor for that. I had
rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me All Beatrice and
Benedick do is argue and insult each other. If Benedick insults her then she snaps right
back like a viper snatching its prey. Benedick says, God keep your Ladyship still in the
mind, so some gentleman of other shall scape a predestinate scratched face. Beatrice
comes right back and says, Scratching could not make it worse an twere such a face
as yours were. Beatrice said that a scratched face is nothing compared to his. She
basically said that his face is really ugly and a lot uglier than a scratched face. Beatrice
is bold and she speaks her mind. She verbally spars with both male and female. The
audience knows from the beginning of the scene that she is someone to be reckoned
with.
