Standard 1A: Candidates develop a vision of learning for a school that promotes the success of all students.

In the fall semester of 2006 I enrolled in the Leadership for Teaching and Learning Program. During
that semester I took EDLD 610 and I wrote: A Leadership Theory Essay: Vision. Ten years later as I work on
my portfolio I can say that my currently vision echoes the vision I had when I began this leadership program.
The main component of my vision as a leader is to build relationships and communicate effectively with all
stakeholders. As a leader, I will advocate for a power-with environment, as proposed by Mary Parker Follett.
In my essay I discuss the message of the following video: Creating a Collaborative Learning Community. The
message of this video is that an engaged learning community is one composed of staff, students, and
community, and only through engaging all stakeholders in a schools vision can a schools vision become
reality.
Additionally, I discussed an ERIC document entitled, Homework and Self-Regulation of Learning,
which discusses the importance of providing instruction that teaches all students to be self-regulated learners.
As we prepare students for their futures outside of high school it is important to prepare students to think
critically, think independently, and think responsibly, but in order to do school, staff professional development
and parent workshops would must be implemented to teach staff and parents how to guide students to become
self-regulated learners.
As stated in Chapter 1 of The Learning School, every good vision should be reflected upon and
reviewed periodically to test its adequacy. As I read through the essays I wrote when I started this program in
2006 and I reflect upon my vision then and my vision now, I can say that I am proud to state that my vision has
not changed, but it has developed. I want to be a leader who communicates well with students, staff and
community and listens to their suggestions and thoughts. I want to be a leader who builds relationships by
being available and present in the school and in the community and working as a team with my staff. I want to
be a leader who is proactive rather than reactive, and I want to be a leader who welcomes the ideas of those who
lives impact the future of our students.
