The Compressor: Key Components

Threshold: The threshold is the


level at which the compressor is
activated.
In the screen capture to the
right, the audio is not playing at
a high enough level to be
affected by the compressor.
Ratio: The ratio determines how
much the signal is reduced by
once it passes the threshold. at
1:1, there is no compression. at
10:1 and above, this is
considered a limiting effect.
Attack: The attack is measured
in milliseconds, and represents
how fast the compressor kicks in
once the threshold is reached.
Release: The release represents
how fast the compressor
deactivates after leaving the
threshold.
