Using Chapter 1800s trial scene, analyze Captain Jaggerys argument that Charlotte

has become an unnatural girl. Write a CBEAR paragraph citing evidence from the text
to support your analysis of his argument.
Captain Jaggerys accusation of Charlotte was careful and successful in finding
her guilty. In the novel, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, Charlotte a
young girl is aboard a ship of mutinous sailors and a devious caption. She has
challenged the Captain's authority and consequently joined the crew. In the tumult of the
storm, a man has died and she is accused of his murder. Charlotte now stands before
the trial by her peers and the captain himself. Charlotte didnt know what was
coming. For when I was able to look I saw that the captain had arranged a kind of
courtroom. She had walked right into a death trap and had nothing and no one to
defend her. She realizes that she is in deep trouble and must stand on her own.
Before this court, he continued, I Andrew Jaggery, by my rightful authority as master of
the Seahawk, charge you, Charlotte Doyle, with the unnatural murder of Samuel
Hollybrass,...Miss Doyle, how plead you? She knew she didnt do it, but if not her then
who. That's what she did not know. She didnt know who she could blame. Do you wish
to charge someone else with the act of murder? She had just become part of the crew
and couldnt blame them and Jaggery knew that. He is pushing her to go back to the
lady she once was and let the whole murder thing be over. Charlotte will not crumple of
the bullying of Jaggery, she will still with the crew. . She believes Zachariah murdered
Hollybrass, but she cant ruin their plan. She wont let Jaggery force her with his cruel
and unnecessary ways. Jaggery is strong, but Charlotte is stronger. Jaggery says to
the crew Did you not teach her to use a knIfe ?, Yes, we did Sir, and she was right
good with it . Jaggery uses the testimony of his crew to argue his belief. He uses the
actions of Charlotte with his crew to implicate her. He also says, Did you not give her
a knife ? This evidence continues to show a pattern of someone who could have killed
the sailor. Charlotte is found guilty and the crew doesnt lift a hand to help her . The
arguments made by Jaggery are successful, she is indeed found guilty. He is careful to
only share evidence that will convict her and has the crew fearful to counter any of his
claims. He is skilled in argument, and his skill my cost Charlotte her life.
