1. Rotation The movement of the earth on its axis from west
to east in 24 hours.
2. Revolution The movement of the earth around the sun in
365 and days.
3. Tide The rhythmic rise and fall of the ocean water twice a
day.
4. Leap year The year which has 29 days in February and a
total of 366 days.

1. Equinox The two occasions in a year when the sun shines
vertically over the equator and day and night are of equal
length throughout the world.
2. Solstice The two times of the year at which the sun
reaches its highest or lowest point the sky at midday,
marked by the longest and shortest days.

IV. Answer the following questions


1. What causes tides?
Ans. Tides are caused by the rotation of the earth on it axis.
Rotation influences the direction of flow of ocean currents
and the direction of winds. This makes the ocean water to
rise and fall rhythmically twice every day.
2. Why does the leap year have 366 days?
Ans. The earth takes 365 1/4 days to revolve around the sun.
But in our calendar a year has only 365 days. The 1/4 th day
is collected over four years to make one complete day and
is added to the month of February of the fourth year. This
year with 366 days is then called the leap year.
3. Explain the seasons of the earth with the help of a
diagram.
