Rhythmic Notation Pizza Fractions

By Niel Cheong
Benchmarks:

State Standards: 3.NF.1

Understand a fraction 1/b, with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6,
and 8, as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is
partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as
the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
National Association for Music Educators Standards: Pr4.2.3b
Read and perform rhythmic patterns using iconic and
standard notation.

Objectives:

1. The student will be able to identify rhythmic music

notation by name.
2. The student will be able to identify the count of each
rhythmic music note.
3. The student will be able to identify what fraction
correlates to each rhythmic music note.

Procedure:
1. The teacher will begin with rhythmic body percussion
chanting. Students will copy the patterns and
movements of the teacher. The teacher will vary the
patterns using all the rhythmic notes whole, half,
quarter, and eighth notes.
2. The teacher will introduce visuals of the rhythmic
notation on paper plate pizzas divided according to
the notes value: whole note= whole plate, half notes=
two halves of a plate, quarter notes= four quarters of a
plate, eighth notes = eight evenly divided sections of a
plate.

3. The students will watch two youtube videos. The first

demonstrates the count length of each note. The
second demonstrates the count length with pizza
portion visuals.
4. Students will sing the Clock Song while identifying
which note value correlates to each clock mentioned in
the song.
5. The teacher will identify what fractions correlate to
each music note.
6. The teacher will ask the students to assist in ordering
the paper plates from longest note/largest slice to
shortest note/smallest slice in a descending mind map
on the white board. (see image below)

7. The teacher will have students attach related fractions

to each note value/pizza plate on the board.
8. The students will be divided into small groups and
instructed to create a Popplet of the note values chart.
Images of the music notes and pizza fractions will
already be available in each device for students to
access. Students will use the name of the note, its
count value and its related fraction on their charts.
9. Students will also create an eight beat rhythm pattern
using any arrangement of the four learned notes with
their group.
10.
Students will present their Popplets and perform
their rhythm patterns.
