AVANT- PROPOS Following the tradition of carly Bengali mystic poetstatrr Lalon Shah left us a legacy of innumerable songs rich in words and melody. The exoteric and the esoteric belief and practices enunciated by Lalon through his exquisite speculative hymns present us a unique Bengali syncretism. Generally known as Baulism this school of faith, in fact, designates a conglomerate of humanistic folk religions. It is difficult to say when the great poct-prophet was bom but it is commonly believed that he had a long life of 112, 116 or 126 years. We are, however, sure that Lalon died on October 17, 1890 as there exists a contemporary obituary anicle published in the weekly Hitokori of Kushtia. Interest in Lalon started since the Sixtics when a Renaissance of Ictters was taking place in this part of the globe. {t is at this time that the present volume of Lalon songs was first published in its monolingual form. The intcrest has now been culminated both nationally and internationally. To commemorate the death centenary of the spiritual master the Bangla Academy, tlicrefore, publishes the current bilingual edition of Lalon songs selected and translated carlier by Professor Abu Rushd, a noted novelist and cducationist. We hope that the present volume would fulfil at least partly the need of the Lalon lovers all over the world. Dhaka October, 1990 Mahmud Shah Qureshi Director Gencral Bangla AcademyPREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION It took twenty-six years for the need te be felt for a second edition of “The Songs of Lalon Shah", but an encouraging aspect of the matter is that it is being brought out at a time that co-incides with the 100th anniversary of the death of the celebrated mystic poct. The second edition contains fifteen additional songs which are mainly of a devotional nature. Lalon is adept at extracting for his songs striking images and interesting turns of expression out of the common people's everyday-life. He often descends into dialect which in the original has a rare flavour and texture but which the English vocabulary is unfortunately unable to accommodate; hence the necessity to improvise within, of course, my capacity to handic the foreign and tricky medium of English. The songs reveal Lalon’s liberal attitude to religions other than Islam, and his conspicuously non-sectarian mind. The images are mostly taken from the common people's ordinary business of life: tilling of the soil, fishing, hankering after carthly pleasures amid the drudgery of toil and the craving for native musial notes played on indigenous instruments. . . Lalon's fervour, however, remains undiminished and his admonitions, in poctic terms, to the errant and sinful man are at once sharp and touched by genuine compassion. The translator would feel amply recompensed if this book is able to give foreign readers, for whom it is meant, some idea of the mystical turn and poetic quality of Lalon’s mind. In this context Lalon Shah was a mystic. His songs bear testimony to his yeamings for a sensitive and sober life of dedication and truth. A translation in English of a selection from his songs is presented in this book. . Syed Ali Ahsan Director; Bengali AcademyPREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION Lalon Shah was bom in the neighbourhood of Kushtia, now a district in East Pakistan, in the year 1774. He belonged to the Baul community, a community of mendicant singers noted for the catholicity of their religious views. Laion Shah composed numerous songs, a selection of which is included in this volume. The songs in this selection reveal Lalon Shah's familiarity with Hinduism and Christianity as well as with Islam. This is not surprising, for in Lalon Shah's time the whole district of Nadia, parts of which are now in West Bengal, was heavily under the influence of Christian missionaries and Hindu theologians. Apart from this, as a member of the ‘Baul’ community, Laion Shah had a liberal attitude to all religions. Even paganism was acceptable to his receptive mind. The devout Muslim is sometimes puzzled by Laton Shah's attitude to Islam. The Prophet he regards, like a pagan, is a Mower or a tree or a fish; like a,Christian, he sometimes looks upon the Prophet of Islam as one with God; frequently, he refers to Muhammad as the person chicfly to be revered in relation to an endless cycle of births— an attitude indicative to the Hindu or Buhist mind. But Lalon Shah's fervour in regard to the holy prophet is This sis striking considering the fact that there is still some controversy about the precise religious faith of Lalon Shah. Some claim that he was a Hindu; others maintain that he was a Muslim. But the question of the religious persuasion of Lalon Shah is notSo important as the quality of the songs written by him. Most of his songs contain images of local significance and will perhaps not convey the right meaning to the foreign readers. These have been excluded from this selection, although their literary quality is not always negligible. The songs in this selection have been classified into (a) hymns, (b) devotional songs, (c) self-knowledge, (d) body-mystery, (e) ultimate knowledge, and (f) enquiry. The classification seems to be a little arbitrary, as neither in tone nor in imagery there is anything in particular which may help distinguish a hymn from an enquiry or adevotional song from a song on ultimate knowledge. The common images suggest a limited mind—which indeed Lalon Shah was. The images of fish and stream, of solitude and helplessness, of the sinner and the wrong-doer, and of creation and death occur in almost all the songs, however, different their themes. Nevertheless, within this limited range, Lalon Shah is able to attain a fine religious fervour, a certain subtlety of perception, and an casy style remarkable in a man of little formal education. The thought- content in these songs is something to take notice of and the felicitious case with which the complexities of theology and mysticism are disentangled is admirable. Lalon Shah has a clear and? an intense vision coupled with a highly developed imagination. The devotional poems of Tagore show the influence of Lalon Shah— which the poet generously acknowldged. Lalon Shah's background as a common man and concem for the spiritual betterment of humanity are both clearly revealed in these songs. The fisherman, the boatman, and the farmer figure prominently in some songs and the frequent use of the word 'Summons' suggests that in the region in which Lalon Shah lived going to court in his time was not an uncommon experience. The idle rich, the depraved, and the erring are all solemnly admonished and the impermanence of earthly possessions is constantly pointed out. The positive aspect of Lalon Shah's belief is that salvation lics in the ceascless exploration of the Uhtimate Being and in complete dependence on him. One must, Lalon Shah believes, unwearingly strive to find out the meaning of existence and the mystery of creation and never swerve from the path of Truth—however difficult it may be to follow. This thought, of course, is not stunningly original, but the processes through which Lalon Shah arrives at his conclusion are all deeply felt and rendered in terms at once intelligible and poetical. Only an insensitive soul can fail to be moved by the fervour of Lalon Shah. He is a fish of wonderful colours. and encompasses the seven seas, within the grasp of everyone, but is visible only to the blessed. Find out the sea and determine its currents and tides and then if you can match one with the other you'll catch the fish. The fish gets caught with the right movement It knows who is the true devotee. Says Seraj, the friend,"Lalon, if you stand so close to the shore, you inay stumble into the sea”.
