That's the premise behind Lombardi Media Corp, which returns to the PROFIT 100 at number 54. The Woodbridge Ont.-based company was "started on a kitchen table” by a teen-aged Michael Lombardi after he lost half his summer earnings on a bad investment. Now, president and CEO Lombardi publishes consumer newsletters written by industry experts that help subscribers manage their finances. Topics include investing in the stock market, how to pay less tax, how to start your own business, and, of course, how to win lotteries. As a sideline, Lombardi Media Corp. also provides direct marketing services for other companies. Lombardi attributes the success of his newsletters to their low cost — between $40 and $200 for an annual subscription. "It’s not like buying a fridge or a car — people will buy my newsletter and somebody else’s newsletter at the same time," he explains. "Our average investor has $300,000 in the stock market, so if he spends $1,000 a year on newsletters, it's nothing compared to what he’s investing.” All that “nothing” adds up for Lombardi, though: revenues have grown by 1,665% over the last five years, reaching $16.2 million in 2000. To sustain his company’s growth, Lombardi plans to continue to launch new titles, He cites the successful launch six months ago of From ten Business Opportunity, which shows readers how to start their own cunee businesses. The company is now looking to enter the health field, scroened and has recruited knowledgeable health-care professionals as ee writers. urboye .?
