DELIVERABLE #1

LEADERSHIP STYLES IN NURSING

I was assigned in ZDH Emergency Room for this week's rotation. It was my first
exposure in that area. Our clinical instructor oriented us, gave specific instructions on the do's
and don'ts and then left is in the care and guidance of the staff nurses.
We were introduced to Sir E who was with us and guided us for most of the time. He was
very kindhearted, patient and supervisory. I must say that he was the ideal "Filipino nurse" for
his technique showcasing just how resourceful with the materials used in providing care for the
patients a nurse can be. His positive disposition that makes the clients feel comforted and cared
for. He was a dedicated person and I could see and feel just how happy and contented he was
with his chosen profession.
I observed in him a charisma to communicate vision, the confidence to act in a way that
inspires others and makes them feel valued, the respect and loyalty his co-workers display
towards him, and the mastery at helping people do things they werent sure they could do by
giving encouragement and praise, which he predominantly exercised with us. These
characteristics describe that of a transformational leader, one who identifies needs for change,
exhibits idealized influence, provides intellectual stimulation, maximizes human potential by
individual consideration, and a leader who is a role model for trust.
Accordingly, the roles of the transformational leader in the healthcare setting include
promoting teamwork among staff, encouraging positive self-esteem, motivating staff to function
at a high level of performance, and empowering staff to become more involved in the
development and implementation of policies and procedures. The transformational leader
portrays trustworthiness and serves as an inspiration to others, possessing an optimistic, positive,
and encouraging outlook. A transformational leadership presence is vital, especially in clinical
areas where new graduate nurses are present. Transformational leadership qualities promote a

healthy environment for employees and staff, which will produce improved staff satisfaction,
retention, and patient satisfaction.
Evidence-based

research

suggests

transformational

leadership

enhances

satisfaction, promotes a positive work environment, and reduces staff turnover.
