Bird Surveys at Cleveland Lakefront Nature

Oriole,YellowbilledCuckoo,BlackbilledCuckooThesearejustahandfulofthespeciesthatare
breedingatClevelandLakefrontNaturePreserve.OverthepasttwoyearsbeginninginmidJuly
2014volunteersurveyorshavedocumented186speciesofbirdsatCLNP!

Inalmost24monthsofsurveying(through1July2016),volunteershave:

Completed230surveys;
Documented186species;
Performed3759pointcounts;
Madeanaverageofover2surveysperweek,summerandwinter.

AlthoughitstooearlytodrawanyhardandfastconclusionsfromdatacollectedbyCLNPvolunteers,
apreliminaryanalysisshowsmorebirdactivityatthesiteoverthispastmildwinterthanduringthe
harshwinterof201415,andshowsthatlargenumbersofshortdistancemigrantslikeRedwinged
BlackbirdsandAmericanRobinsarrivedoveraweekearlierthisspring.

Thebreedingseasonisinfullswingnow,withyoungAmericanRobinsandRedwingedBlackbirds
everywhere,andfledglingsofotherspeciesscatteredabout.Thesummerpresenceofbothspeciesof
cuckoosisasurprise,asisthesheernumberofbreedingbirdspresentatthesite.
