Unit D FAQs
Q. I would like to register for my Unit D assignment but have not yet passed the other written
exams, am I eligible to sit the Unit D exam?
A. If you have studied the other 3 units then you will have the theory needed for the Unit D
assignment. If you have not covered Unit A, B and C materials then you will be at a
disadvantage for your assignment as you will not have the full understanding needed for your
assignment.

Q. I have sent in my request to be registered, what happens now?

A. You will be contacted by your designated tutor when the registration period closes. In the
meantime you should download the NEBOSH Guidance and get to work on your report. If in
doubt about the suitability of the workplace you have chosen to base your report on, you
should contact your tutor to discuss this.
Q. When will I be contacted by my designated tutor?
A. You will be contacted via email once the registration period closes and when all forms have
been completed and sent to NEBOSH.
Q. How will I be contacted by my designated tutor?
A. This will be via email.
Q. Do I have to participate with the discussion log?
A. Yes, this is a requirement of the course and your Unit D cannot be accepted without the
tutor signed discussion log.
Q. How is the discussion log completed?
A. The tutor will ask you questions via email. Based on your answers your tutor will provide
feedback and advice, allowing you to make any corrections to your report before you submit
it. When the question and answer process has been completed your tutor will sign your
discussion log, scan it, and email you a copy.
Q. This is my first time submitting my Unit D so can I submit drafts of my work to my
designated tutor?
A. No, unfortunately tutors are unable to accept drafts of your work. We go through the
discussion log questions to ensure you are on the right track.
Q. How long will it take to receive a response from my tutor after I have sent answers to their
questions?
A. You should receive an email them within 48 hours of your email, not including the UK
weekend (Saturday and Sunday) when tutors are not in the office. That means that an email
sent on Friday at 6pm may only be answered by 9am Wednesday morning. However, we do
generally respond much sooner than this, so these timescales are only the maximum time you
will be waiting.
Q. If my tutor is on annual leave during the Unit D period, can I contact another tutor?
A. No, each tutor is assigned their own students so will have full workloads. Tutors will not be
able to access other tutors assigned students. If your tutor is on leave, they will let you know
when this will be so that whilst they are on leave you can still continue with your assignment
using the guidance document until they return to continue the discussion log with you.
Q. How long does it take to complete the discussion log?
A. The discussion log can take time to go through so it should not be left until close to the
submission date. Given the possible 48 hours between emails, it can take up to 2 weeks to
complete the discussion log.
Q. Where do I send my completed assignment?
A. Your final bound Unit D assignment is posted in hard copy directly to NEBOSH courier is

the safest and quickest method if you are internationally based or tracked mail/special
delivery if you are in the UK.
Q. Is the submission date final can I submit after this date?
A. The submission date is the last date by which you NEBOSH must receive your final bound
submission for marking it will not be accepted after this date.
Q. Can I submit my project early i.e. before the submission date?
A. Yes, you can submit before the submission date, however, you must wait until NEBOSH
email you your submission form which is usually 3 weeks before the submission date. The
submission form is required and the Unit D cannot be submitted without it.
Q. I am re-submitting do I need to do the discussion log again?
A. No, you do not need to go through the discussion log again.
Q. I am re-submitting, what do I do now?
A. If you are re-submitting you will be assigned a tutor who will be able to review your
previous submission and feedback from NEBOSH and offer advice and guidance on how to
improve.
Q. Are there any samples of the Unit D that I can view?
A. No, there arent any samples of the assignment as NEBOSH do not produce them due to
cases of malpractice. The guidance document provides enough information to be able to put
together your assignment.
Q. Who marks my Unit D?
A. NEBOSH marks the assignment.
Q. When are the results released by NEBOSH for the assignment?
A. The results are released 10 weeks after the submission date.
Q. How will I receive my results?
A. NEBOSH will post out your results to you directly but if you have not received them on the
official results day then you can contact the exam results email address from your course
contacts list and they can provide your mark via email. (Please allow at least 48 hours for your
results due to numbers of students emailing)
Q. What if I disagree with the final marks?
A. If you believe your mark should have been better then you can apply to NEBOSH for an
Enquiry About Results (EAR). There will be a fee for this but NEBOSH will remark your
assignment. You can contact the exams department and they can provide you with the forms
for this process.
Q. Where is the cover sheet needed for my assignment?
A. The cover sheet is included in the guidance document.
Q. What will I be sent by my tutor?
A. The tutor will send you instructions on how to proceed based on whether this is your first
submission or you are re-submitting. You will also be sent the guidance document which will
include the marking scheme and the format and instructions needed for your assignment.

Q. What is the declaration at the bottom of the discussion log and do I need to sign this?
A. The declaration is signed by you to state/confirm that the information you have included in
your assignment is your own work. This signed declaration is a requirement for your
assignment if this is not signed, your project can be voided.
Q. What order should the documents take in my Unit D assignment?
A. Your assignment should have the following structure:
- Submission form
- Cover sheet
- Discussion log with signed declaration
- Assignment
Q. Am I able to ask my tutor questions if I am stuck on any section?
A. Yes, as you go through your discussion log you can ask any questions you may have on that
discussion topic.
Q. What is the purpose of the discussion log?
A. As we are unable to accept drafts of your work, we ask questions on certain topics to
ensure that you are on the right track with your assignment and if you are missing items we
will let you know so you can add more information in or remove incorrect items.
Q. How will I know what structure to use for my assignment?
A. The guidance document tells you what you need to know for your assignment including the
format to use and what to include in each section. The marking scheme tells you what to
include to gain the higher marks and shows the difference in requirements from low scores to
high scores.
Q. Do I need to name my company in my assignment?
A. No, if you require confidentiality or your company does not wish to be named, you can omit
the company name and can simply refer to your company as Company XYZ.
Q. I have registered for my Unit D assignment but am unable to submit, what do I do?
A. If you have registered but are not able to submit then you should let your tutor know as
soon as possible so the tutor time can be re-allocated.
Q. If I am unable to submit can I postpone until the next submission period?
A. If you cannot submit then your exam fee cannot be transferred or refunded as this will have
already been paid to NEBOSH. If you wish to re-register for the next submission period then
you would be required to pay the exam fees again.
